'Stripped back' used by gormless radio dj's to describe an accoustic version. Dj's in general who crawl up the arse of any performer.
'Going forward'. !!!!! Oh you fucked up and want us to forget about it?

It's mentioned before but people who begin each and every sentence with 'so'.
yes! I remember The moment when this idiotic Meme began about a year ago and I'm sure it began on the Internet within social media. It's just stupid and asinine. Starting the sentence with the word so. Because "so" demands an antecedent, a response to a previous thought. In this trendy meme the word has no antecedent.
And it has spread to everywhere, pundits, newscasters, politicos, etc. it irritates the hell out of me, but you are the first one I've seen who has commented on it. I thought I was going crazy because everyone was doing it and nobody was commenting on how stupid it was.

Boots on the ground: would it be globally humorous (or sophomoric) if we sent bombers over Saudi Arabia and targeted key locations to drop 60,000 old combat boots on? There! There's your boots on the ground. Now STFU!

Hey cam, guess what I have here now because of you (And the power of suggestion in a thread here somewhere). Two large bags of almond M&Ms! As well as a large bag of peanut MM.s. And some Ghirardelli cinnamon crunch chocolate… and I must say the almond M&Ms are indeed better than I rememberd.

This line of discussion is akin to heresy in some circles, even today. Talk of free unconditional love, and God within us makes most Evangelical and Born Again Christians skin crawl. Such a radical idea sounds like it comes from some long haired, unshaven, sandal wearing, dirty hippie, that roves the land... oh wait. Jesus the Jewish heretic would most likely approve.

Some Christians hinge their whole belief system on the resurrection myth because it means they follow the word of God, not a wandering heretic Jew. The word of mortal Jesus just doesn't seem to carry the same weight, or authority as the father, son, holy ghost. Even in our modern times it seems who brought the message is more important the the message itself. Most of humanity hasn't changed much over a few thousand years. Cult of personality and style over substance.

Childish image negating the substance of my post, for the sake of others sensibilities.

thoughtful, good post.

PS, yes, I remember liking "Prince of darkness" as well.

Dave won me over initially but I've inadvertently drifted away. He's a little too came and wholesome for me, as they say "no gravitas". Not veggie enough. But I still listen to the show now and then selectively. I too don't care for Malley, as I mentioned weeks ago.

In a general sense, I am surprised that mac/pc/linux+derivatives is the whole game field. What happened to the innovators. Where is our next game changer. Have the collective geeks of the world acquiesced to a three+ course meal until the end of time? It's sad.

The Chinese are working on creating a brand-new from-the-ground-up computer system. Because their keyboard and instruction language was too vague and cumbersome being based on pictures. And they want to build in complete isolation like certificate handling, security issues, etc.

Tarbaby, have you ever heard of docetism?  If not, check it out because it's an interesting theory about the nature of Jesus.
yes, Robert, thanks. I had heard of it but knew little specifics. Seems awfully complicated, eludes Occam's razor.

What I thought he was clearly trying to say (The idea of being born again) was that one discovers the god(The I am, unconditional love) inside themselves and fully realize that is the core of there being. What, in the East, was called "enlightenment".

Oh, okay. I thought I read above a discussion about resurrection and the idea that people were seeing Jesus after he was supposedly resurrected.

I also read a discussion about whether Jesus was God or the son of God. Christ even said he wasn't God. The idea was that anyone who was born again recognizes the issue of self identification. The idea that we are all God or manifestations of God. Not God in its entirety. As the centuries went by mankind, as it is wont to do, took the figurative and symbolic literally.

On the issue of the empty tomb proving resurrection, I don't think I would put all my eggs in that basket. I noticed one time that there were four books in the New Testament that talked about the angel that supposedly  rolledthe rock away from the cave. They didn't agree on whether it was an angel or a man that was sitting on the rock outside the cave when others came to see that the body of Christ was missing. This is critically flimsy evidence to base an entire belief in the resurrection on. It seems more likely to me that it was men who rolled the Rock away. (And took the body) not an angel. It seems to me that over and over again these little magical upgrades were added to the texts.

Surely you've noticed no one on TV, or in the movies, or giving a speech, or teaching a class, etc - talks too fast.

Now if you are an auctioneer, a used car salesman, dealing 3 card monte, or doing a commercial and trying to put in a bunch of disclaimers you hope no one will hear, carry on.
Point goes to paperboy.  mr. Fijit, it makes us Earthers nervous when you talk so fast. ;-) :-)(Not that you spoke that fast yesterday but the time before that you were really flying)

I've meant to create this thread for a while.  Despite google, imdb, etc, there remains a handful of films/TV whose titles I cannot locate. I simply don't have enough information to go on, or am not using an efficient search string, or am just damned unlucky.

By describing what I remember, maybe someone will recognize it or somehow locate it.

For my first one, I have precious little information:

I believe this is from the 1960s. This scene occurs at the end of the film. A middle-aged woman and a younger man are having drinks over a coffee table. I believe she was wearing gloves and a mink coat. The woman begins to trace the rim of her glass with a finger in repetitive circles.  I "think" it starts vibrating, making a tone, as it is crystal. The man croaks.

I saw this when perhaps seven or eight years old - the glass making a tone, gloves, etc, can be a bad memory/embellished recall, though I can hear the tone in my head as I type this.

I want to say that the woman was a "medium" but can't say for sure. I want to say that perhaps she was a "fake medium" and was tying up a loose end by killing her partner.

It created a type of child folklore between my older brother and I. We both misunderstood that she had killed the man by rubbing the rim of the crystal glass, when in fact, surely she had poisoned him.

I've tried for a very long time to find this film.  I believe it was a feature film, not a soap opera scene/television series.

If you're suffering a similar torture, post your lost theater notes here.
as I followed your description what came to my mind was a movie called "dressed in green". 1946. I can still distinctly see the woman running her finger around the rim of her Glass as she hypnotized… Well, I can't reveal too much… And this may well be the wrong movie because some of the elements were different. So I'm not sure if that is because of your memory.

He isn't.

He told me to tell you that you are confusing religion with the existence of a creator. Ricky Gervais is the poster child of confusing the two. Poor sap, he once was funny and then he found science.

He also said I should write it in shit on the wall but I skipped that step.
You mean there are revisions that aren't centered around a creator? Anyway I don't think I'm confusing The existence of God with religion, actually the question is about why are people motivated to convert others. Don't know how Ricky Jervay's got into this.
Anyone else?

Can anyone explain why this alleged God would be interested in believers converting others? If IT really wanted everyone to know about IT why didn't it just instill this information in them WHEN IT CREATED EVERYONE? And if there is no god what is there in the minds of believers that drives them to convert, to spread the word? god orno god  believers all over the world are certainly tenacious and driven.

, some members expressed shock that be apparent antireligious posts above. The  anger and outrage of members such as area51drone, DPS,Celt, MV,  myself, or others shouldn't, I think, be regarded as blasphemous or sacrilegious. if society is going to try to convince us that this anthropomorphic God is real then we are going to react viscerally  to these scenarios He supposedly orchestrate which are outrageous, like the situation of Job. or the death of innocent children every day. Are the ideas that man must spend eternity in the agony of hell for the sins of our ancient ancestors. Talk about cruel and unusual punishment.

Celt  had it right The Church must keep fabricating new dogma as we learn more about ourselves and the universe around us.
Also, kudos to ccauthor.

There certainly enough anecdotes of elderly driving big cars. My observations are that the cars are usually about 10 years old. Perhaps the cars were bought for comfort and with little forethought towards aging and the decline of heigth and the skills to drive appropriately.

I have been a proponent of having everyone over the age of 65 to be required to have driving tests on a yearly basis. And at 70 a complete neuro workup.

What scares me is, I have become the annoyance I have always been angered by. I now find myself driving down the road only to realize I still have my turning signal blinking and I have been on the same road for more than 10 minutes.
plus from comment I've heard over the years elderly people think the bigger cars are safer. More metal surrounding them. And by cracky  they are right.

Fine moving honest posts here from everyone, on both sides. Except for you water1, god doesn't like short posts.  :-) Applause to CCuthor, DPS and Area51Drone. And others I'm forgetting.

From an empirical perspective Mankind's psyche including the vast subconscious is full of the same drives that got us to where we are. Violent, vicious, clever, sometimes cooperative,, at times compassionate,  etc. but the source of these impulses is in the subconscious not in the daily waking consciousness. Sweeping archetypical, powerful. So the conscious mind, not knowing where these strong urges for "good" or "evil"come from (Actually they come from the Freudian want/need hierarchy) attributes them to massive external godlike entities like "god" or "Satan". And have done so for millennia. Thus religions are born, Flourish, and evolve. on every continent going back  before recorded history began.
We are basically ruled by fear; advancement toward pleasure and avoidance of pain. Where is your God now, Moses?;-)

A very good friend of mine (Ron, a black guy),  whom I have lost touch with over the years, used to tell me one thing about us white folks is when we are embarrassed or angry or laughing too hard we turned bright pink! This caused me to laugh hard and turn bright pink. Because, I reflected, it's true. … But I suppose I could have socked him or suEd him… had it been, say, Anthony from Opie and Anthony.
By the way, any word on whether that lovely lass who punched Anthony has been arrested for assault yet?
