Explosions at Boston Marathon

It is extremely surrealistic to be watching TV and seeing the remnants of a bomb blast at the bus stop you're at 3 times a week. Boylston Street in Copley Square. Holy shit.

Patriot's Day bombs? My money is on sovereign nation kooks. Honoring their patron saint McVeigh.

Juan

It could be - also double whammy day as it is also Income Tax day.

But other terrorists pick special anniversaries, too.

An offshoot of the Weathermen bombed the Suffolk County courthouse in Boston on Patriot's Day, 1976...but the trend towards Waco/OKC type of mishegas seems more likely these days.

Seems like Income Tax Terrorists would choose a government building or some tax hiking politician

It's been suggested the only reason al-Qaeda types haven't committed acts of terrorism in our open society - and it seems like there is an endless list of soft targets - is because they don't want to do something less spectacular (if that's the word) than the 9.11 attacks.

Eddie Coyle, are you alright?

Tax day, Patriot's Day and the 18th anniversary of the Murrah Center bombing is this Friday, and the 20th anniversary of the fire at Waco. It's a terrorist attack, but homegrown or foreign?

I'm alive! Running a marathon will kill me more than a bomb would, but it is awfully hectic here right now. Tons of helicopters over my house(I live roughly 2 miles from the bombing site and across the harbor from the JFK Library)
I'm guessng dometic...but hearing foreign. Lots of rumors.

Reports are that cell service has been disabled in the Boston area.
Scary shit.
Take care, Coyle.

Thanks, any reason not to leave the house...

But it is kinda scary. Reminds me of 9/11 atmosphere. Lots of areas shut down, Logan Airport shut down, public transportation diverted. Cops are all over the place in every form. National Guard helicopter over my house right now(and two news crews)

Glad you're OK!

It brings back 9/11 here - the uncertainty, the rumors and the eeriness of no plane traffic. The first photos out from Boston are horrific, like 9/11.

Fuck terrorists and their fucking bombs. If these assholes are caught, I hope they fry.

Pragmier

Holy shit I just saw this on the news. Good to hear you're ok EC, at least preliminary the death count is low. I pray it stays that way.

Juan

Reports are that the Saudi was wounded.  If he was a suicide bomber, wouldn't he be dead?  If he planted a bomb, why did he stick around, in range?  I doubt he has anything to do with it.

eddie dean

terrible incident for this town, state and country. more reports of 1 or 2 unexploded bombs found in Boston.
I wonder what kind of new "patriot day" laws will come out of this.

I just don't understand the mindset of people who bomb. particularly civilians at a celebration type event like the BM.

"Authorities ID suspect as Saudi national in marathon bombings..." http://www.nypost.com/p/news/national/authorities_under_suspect_guard_y2m8cJO29uC2PDGIjYBalO

Notwithstanding that initial reports about chaotic events are almost always in some part wrong, I still must say, "Ouch, man. Just...ouch".

Eddie Coyle

          If it's a Saudi?

Then we must let the healing process begin, understand the root causes and embrace tolerance.  ::)

because the Saudi's are our friends, right?
nevermind that their citizens like to blow us up.... with friends like this.......
{sarcasm off

Backpacks in trashcans is pretty rudimentary and why I doubt it's part of organized terror. Serious shit, but lone nuts could pull this off as well.

I agree.
prob some local or homegrown nutjob using black powder pipebombs. seems to me international terrorists would have access and use high explosives like c4.

thank god it was not worse, but we as a nation will overreact just the same...
George bush wants to invade north Korea

onan

Too early to tell fact from rumor. Keep your head down, Coyle.

I don't think it is an international terrorist plot. If it is an international plot... good they are devolving and soon our biggest worries will be slashed tires.

Zircon

Early "suspects" include a Saudi. But it being April 15 (tax day) and with the heated gun rights war going on in congress, I'm almost certain the gun rights, Constitutionalists and Tea Party are among Nepolitano's short list.

Any comments on this act of terror in Boston?

analog kid

Just stumbled upon a pic of a guy in a wheelchair with his legs blown off. And this guy in a cowboy hat holding his arteries so he doesn't bleed out. There's some serious heroics going on up there. Whoa.

Eddie Coyle

           Well this sucks:

I have several relatives who know the eight year old who was killed today(his mother gravely injured and sister likely to be an amputee). One relative works at the boy's school and is friends with his mother.

azdjoe

This might have been predicted by one of the callers during the 1st night of the annual New Years' prediction show.  Check it out: Boston explosion predicted on annual Coast to Coast AM Prediction show?

That sucks Coyle. Seems like it must become a small world when something this horrific happens.

Very small. Martial law for most of the downtown area, basically off limits to anybody who isn't part of the investigation. The shock of the afternoon has become depression at night. My girlfriend has been on the phone since 3:30...well, that's actually common, but in this event there's actually something to talk about and her brother is on the scene. He says it feels like Baghdad where he is, with fatigued, heavily armed guardsman sweeping alleyways and hotel corridors. That area is full of 30/40/50 story skyscapers/hotels that have to be searched.

Thanks, man. It's heartbreaking indeed. I was pissed when I heard an eight year old was killed, but a few hours later(8 o'clock) I found out that my cousin saw the kid every day at school/sports events with her kids and it made it even more depressing.

mombird3

I just learned of it when I was at the library and on their computer. I am feeling bad and we hope the victims are OK. This is very bad. I pray for them. The kid who died was very sad.

Tinfoil Hat

Glad to hear you two Eddies are ok. Keeping my fingers crossed no other Bostonians we know were hurt.

You're right, Mr Coyle. This is depressing as hell. I keep shaking my head wondering what kind of person does something so terrible.
