Am I the only Windows 8.1 fan here? Admittedly 8 was hard to swallow at first, but 8.1 is great on the newest hardware.

The ONLY reason you are in the up's and Down's with me in this project is because I choose to share them with this group. If that is simply to painful for some I can stop, this is a evolving affair and I am sure there will be more to suffer through.

Keith is a slightly cranky very bright guy who has a hell of a lot to do as do I. I have been building (2) Laptop computers for the studio for the last two days from scratch and just that has me in a foul mood. Windows 7 from scratch.

There are a lot of very smart people on here and your input has been valuable.

Art

I like many others hope the information never stops because it is a two way street in which a lot of great information is going both ways. A little pain will help us all become a much stronger in the end... and no matter what I'm with you Art. I built my first computer in 2002, and just bought one that was ready to go the next time. They are/can be a pain in the ass.

Art, I appreciate your updates and keeping us in the loop. I am thrilled beyond belief to no end that you are coming back.  :)

How many of you know that when u get a raw windows 7 machine the first thing you do is download 133 updates and that is the first stage then you get more and more, it is a full one minimum day project. Then you can start downloading software, then you get more updates, then you want to drink heavily even though you don't drink.

Art

I'm still stuck on Vista, and about any version of Windows will make one want to drink. One of the recent updates effected only the font of Facebook making it unreadable. Wth, is up with that Bill Gates?!?

If you like Apple just wait until Windoze 12, or whatever number they pull out of the air.
Win 12 will be the wonderful walled garden that is Apple, with a bonus monthly/yearly subscription fee. You won't have to pay the fee, if you don't feel the need for security updates, bug fixes.

I have heard a lot of people say they are done with computers after dealing with (insert windows with number here), hehe. I refuse to update until they decide to stop giving updates for older versions because we are not worthy.

Building my own machine, and running Windows on it is infinitely better than any Apple.

Hey Art. At least its not Windows ME.   Anybody else remember that peice of garbage?

I liked Windows XP myself.   Hell we still run Windows 98 at the lab.  Its the only system that ca. Run our old Gas Chromatographs.  Thats because the machines need an ISA board interface.   ITS THE GODDAMN STONE AGE I TELL YOU!!

8 is fine with Start8 and Modern mix.

XP was nice, Windows 7 is good.  Windows 8 and Windows 10 are just doing everything they can to push a tablet OS to the desktop.  Not everyone wants a tablet OS on their desktop however.  If they would just put classic mode in Windows 8 and 10, then there would not be so many complaints.

Classic Shell does at least fix the start menu in Win8/10.

With a simple registry edit, you can make xp continue to receive security updates.

Lol. At least most of your programs should run. Be prepared tho for an eerie silence when the HD stops running continuously after about 3 days of updating.

Nice. I'm still using Vista and like it enough to stick with it for as long as humanly possible. After seeing people use 7, 8 I'm just not a fan. I'm scared to see what every they roll out with next... and wonder if they will ever come out with one that doesn't require a million updates.

Vista, when fully updated, is just fine.

Nice link. I'll be out in the garage looking for the old XP machine.

Would be glorious to get it back up online with all the favorite ancient programs and such already installed and running.

If it works, I will submit an adulatory post.

I have had very few problems with it despite my current computer be a little on the old side. The first computer I had by this age I had probably already had to re-install Windows XP a time, two, or three.

I'm listening to AB on U7.  It's the vampire interview.  He just asked the vampire from the Vampire Church what the downside is to be being a vampire.   :) ;)  I can't wait to listen to Art live again. This is an awesome interview!

Oh yeah. I build my own computers and am still using Win 7 Professional. Love it but when I rebuild updating does take forever. It's always a full day to build and install everything I need.

Art:  Building systems from researching what hardwares are compatible up to assembling the system and then installing the OS and software is something I find therapeutic.  Go figure that some of us (me) are such gluttons for punishment!  I told a coworker I'd build him a system no charge today, he asked me why I don't do it for a living, I just smiled and said, "trust me, there's no money to be made at such an endeavor!" Which is a fact.  I worked in a computer shop for a while and it is amazing how little respect and regard people have for computer techs.  They don't think twice about paying an electrician or doctor 100 dollars a visit, but for some reason, computer techs are unworthy, even though what they do is very difficult and can be a harrowing feat of effort.  Our shop averaged about 30 to 40 badly infected laptops a day (men insisting on going to porn sites and can't understand the simplest reasoning about why they shouldn't do it, and clueless about how they risk identity theft).  So many dumb men with total inability to appreciate the technicians that bail them out of trouble.  There are much better ways to make a living than fixing computers!

I hear ya on the headache.  In the future, I can recommend some boutique laptop builders who will do fantastic work and build to spec with guarentee.  Personally, I don't care for laptops and tablets, I prefer desktops that I build for myself from scratch, so that I know it's done right (if it ain't, no one to blame but myself, and yeah, I've made mistakes!)

I hated MS Windows ME and Vista, both poorly executed "transition" builds.  Windows 8 is another "Transition" build, but with the free "Classic Shell" or one of the other Windows Shell programs, you get back a Window's 7 style interface to some extent, with a start menu.  My favorite Windows versions are 3.11, XP, 7, and I am anticipating 10 to be good also, but frankly, I prefer SuSE Linux with KDE any day, and it's open source free of charge thanks to all the coders with big hearts.

Building a system from loose parts is a bit more work than just installing an OS on a barebones box, but if you are gonna go through the hassle of installing your OS, your drivers, and your updates and softwares, why not take the extra step and assemble parts from newegg and tiger direct (and microcenter and the other good dealers) and have a build you can be truly proud of?

I just upgraded (partial, still have lots of stuff to get but will have to wait until next year): ASUS Z97 Pro, Intel i5 Devil's Canyon, and 16 GB DDR3 2400 using an older CM Stacker case and old parts.  It's killer, I desperately needed the upgrade, and I highly recommend the Z97 Pro, it's a very good board for cheap, if you order one, get the latest revision which includes USB 3.1 rather than 3.0 (they changed it too late for me).

If anyone is interested in building their own desktop and don't know where to start, PM me, I'm no so called "computer-fu genius" but I can help you get started, basically, first choose what processor you want, then choose chipset, and then which board with that chipset, than RAM for that board, then SMPS and video card (if needed for gaming/work/CAD), and then case and the rest of the parts.  Note that only certain chipsets work with certain CPUs, that's step one.

U7 itself hasn't been down, only via TuneIn.
You can still listen to U7 directly on their website or thru a direct stream with a PC media player such as winamp.
There are several other classic Art Bell streams that are still working on TuneIn too.
Just search with "Art Bell" there...

Thank you for your answers! Thankfully U7 has since started working again on tune-in because I'd been listening to this in the meantime and the guest has been non-stop Major Head Games!

I think one of our Romanian friends stopped by recently, and said they had fixed the issue... and all should be well again.
