Do not donate to this forum, the guy who runs it owns half of Dubai.

What the hell...I should get a discount when I fly thru there on rotations.....

I hope art gets a publicist for the show. They can also help get him media interviews. Launching MITD is not going to be easy.

It's working for me.
I'm guessing it the update from 4/9 to version 7.2. I can listen to other stations just not U7. This is frustrating.

Try shoutcast, it has like 5 streams for varying decades and no ads at all. ;)

Long, long time lurker, first time poster.

The great news propelled met to finally sign up. You can add me to the list of subscribers and donors (if there is an option). I'm a long long time fan of Art's show.  I'm also a tasty Canadian. Eh.

Good luck Art.
Ah, another bacon boy.  Welcome aboard, pour yourself some Scotch and make yourself at home.

Looks like Norway is ditching FM...
http://www.geeksandbeats.com/2015/04/dab-radio-changeover-announced-for-norway/
QuoteThe changeover from FM radio to DAB will start in Norway on January 11, 2017 and conclude in December, the Norwegian government announced Wednesday. Norway follows UK in digital radio switchover.

However, they are going to something called Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB). The UK did this not too long ago.

I'd be interested to see what the listener numbers are for DAB versus straight-up internet streaming for areas that have ditched FM. I think the Internet will still win. This moves us closer to the ultimate endgame: the death of AM and FM, with all-IP-based content delivery.

Art's on the right track!

None of the Art Bell streams will play, and neither Dark Matter on Tunein.

UHOH

EDIT: I just checked and stream is playing, takes it a few seconds to load

WHAT A WEEK....................

laserjock

Something's weird, sometimes tune in dark matter won't work, sometimes it does.  And all the old Art Bell streams don't work.  It used to be that I could only listen to them with Chrome, now none of them work.

Vladimir

"Art Bell Always" on Tune In went off for a long time, but has been back for a couple of months and plays fine.

Catsmile

Will he, won't he? AAC or MP3? Can't get a stream to work?

Some can't cook healthy because they only have one burner.
While others make a living off a single burner.

Some carry the water for others.
While others have to carry their own water.
Lets enjoy the simple things in life for a moment.

Meanwhile in the province... life is good.

Ok guys here is some not such great news, we are going to have to cap the live listener number to between 65-70 thousand. The reason for this is easy, the stupid music. If we go over that it gets mind numbing expensive, I am not saying impossible but very expensive if we knock ourselves out of the small Webcaster catagory. So I guess it will be first come first served and we will not open the big bandwidth doors until 9PM P.T.

Now if somebody picked up our stream and sent it out from some far flung overseas place, well hmmm not much we could do about that, right?

We do want tight control of the Podcast, we are ready for volunteers, if you would like to help please contact Keith at kr@rowlandnet.com and help us with Podcast Pirates (mostly utube)

All of this may not be a problem anyway, I might be lucky to scare up 10,000 . We shall see

65-70 thousand is more than plenty because a limitless number of people will surely start setting up shoutcast relays of your live show if that cap is reached, increasing your listener capacity by ridiculous numbers that you won't even be aware of.  i don't see any of this as bad news at all.

this whole thing is just going to be great.

I'd be fine with paying $5 month to listen live. I don't need the podcast and if there are streams out there in the universe, I am still glad to pay for a guarantee to listen nightly. Why don't you sell some guarantee live spots? It's optional, of course, so it still meets your goals of free broadcast.

Don't sweat the small stuff.
64Kbit stream sounds good to me, as does 65-70K listener cap.
You gotta start somewhere, and thats as good a place as any.

At the moment the big stuff seems to be your old C2C pirated streams not working, and will your stream be AAC or MP3 in a small enough bitrate so as not to cause people to run into data caps. But I wouldn't sweat that either, sounds like personal problems to me.  ::)  :P

If people have data cap issues, well thats between them and the data usage plan they pay for and their ISP. Most folks have data caps now, I do. I can't stream and mirror horse porn 24/7. Now I have to watch what I consume, instead of having a all you can eat horse porn buffet. On the other hand I could pay more for a better data plan, if I really needed to stream moar horse porn. As it stands nao I'm having a hard time keeping hydrated, even with the IV.  First world problems ain't easy.

No limit on Podcasts of course. The rub is we have to limit the number of live listeners to 65-70K. No way to guarantee entry, first come first served. We will not and can not charge for the live stream.

Maybe you could make other US based small broadcasters affiliates and list them on the site for people to bleed over into. Just an idea and the podcast could still be behind the $5 pay wall. Just throwing darts at a board.

65-70K?  that is still a very healthy number.  To start with.  We are talking a revolution here.  You called it ART.  I'm ready to ride.  If you pop the trunk, I'll just throw in this extra ammo, Scotch and blondes.  You never know.

Wow, lots of posts since I last checked in and I'm thrilled about Art's return as an independent broadcaster!

I'm certainly no expert on streaming, but I have purchased bandwidth for a small community station and I can share what I've learned.  The service I use claims most people overestimate their numbers of listeners.  Broadcasters might say "I have ten thousand fans/followers so I'll need bandwidth to accommodate all of them."  The keyword is how many simultaneous listeners you have, as people log on and off during a live show for a variety of reasons.  Art Bell's listeners will number in the thousands for sure, but every fan won't be listening to every minute of his live show.  Also, I can see why SiriusXM knocks listeners off after 90 minutes, as some listeners stay "camped out" on a stream, using up valuable bandwidth when not even listening.  I once found people still logged on to the stream when our FM transmitter was down, essentially "listening" to dead air.  It's a good idea to set the timer for only the length of your show.
