Schtick coma. We're at the Police Academy 6 level of satire/comedy here. Or Ernest Goes to Jail.

As bad as the later Police Academy movies were, they still featured a lot of talented and likable performers, albeit slumming for a paycheck. And lest we forget, the great Jim "Ernest" Varney was in fact a brilliant classically trained actor who, fortunately or unfortunately, found his greatest success in beating a tired one-joke premise into the ground. But at least the initial premise itself had SOME amusement value.

Not sure the same can be said in this case.

I predict that on April 2nd, Snoory will announce his " retirement " as the host of Coast and that Fort Rock will become his man servant and all around toady.

Cage match Fort Rock vs Tommy, winner take all.

Side note - in addition to 24 hour distress calls, be prepared as George doesn't take an extra change of clothing with him on road trips and is susceptible to falling into mud holes.

I erred in likening him to a sequel especially, since the demand for a "part 1" of his act is meager and unlikely to be greenlighted, even by Troma or New Line Cinema. He may be something so singularly awful that contrast/comparison to most anything is near impossible.

What's worse is that his April 2 routine is pure plunder. He took someone else's sarcastic observation about a goddamn clock in the background and based the latest delusion around it. Not only is he a crack pot, he's a joke thief.

I have to admit, I always did like the guy who did all the sound effects, one trick pony though he was.

Once again I must protest. Troma has produced some of the finest films of the last 30 years. Not just the obvious ones like "Class of Nukem High" and "The Toxic Avenger"; I'm talking the greatest version of Lord Oxford's tale ever committed to film, TROMEO & JULIET. Not to mention "Cannibal: The Musical", which helped launch the careers of a certain famous animation duo by the names of Matt & Trey.

It's doubtful that they'd be interested in a movie starring FR, but maybe I can pitch them one ABOUT him...now let's see. Who should play him? Thoughts?

Anyone see this 2011 story in the Pahrump Valley Times about Dennis Hof (of HBO Bunny Ranch fame) opening up an alien themed brothel?

http://pvtimes.com/news/hofs-area-51-cathouse-issued-temporary-brothel-license/

This specifically caught my attention:

QuoteHof said he was getting input from Art Bell, the famous radio talk show host of “Coast to Coast”, which dealt with extraterrestrials.

A quick search in Nye County property records appears to show Bell transferred property to a Hof LLC in 2012.

Edit: I searched CG for this before posting and couldn't find it.

I'd be afraid I'd pick out a nice, tall blonde Nordic, and when I got to the room, find out she was actually a shape-shifting Reptilian who was hungry.

I have driven past that place before. I think its called the Alien Cathouse. Its adjacent to a really large gas station.

A good suggestion would be the centerpiece of Coyle's avatar (at least the one he had until this morning).  I forget the name of the show.

The ABC sunday evening masterpiece Life Goes On. The "very special episode"- Corky burning down the family's restaurant is classic poignancy.

That's interesting.  I wonder what property Art transferred to The Alien Cathouse.  Was it land, artifacts, alien props, something else?

Somewhere I have on tape an episode of Life Goes On that was never aired because it was too controversial. "Corky! Don't you know what date rape is?"

I hope that episode wasn't part of the sub-plot cycle where somebody on the show got the AIDS.
I have a cousin named Chris Burke. Take a wild guess what his(unwanted) nickname became after Sept 1989. He's in his 40's now and that show has been gone 20 years...but some us( :-X ) always remind him...

Unfortunately, the Reptilians have more sense than to try to eat Noory, nor would the greys abduct him because of his inferior genes.

Hof's opened the place.

Look at the photograph, and the area above Art's Left Shoulder. There is his Broadcast Chair, then above that, a clock reading 4:02!

If only Art had taken that photo half an hour later.

Ouch! to your cousin. Just wow.

It's actually a sketch I did for my public access cable comedy show I had on in Phoenix in the late 90s, but that particular bit ended up never getting aired because our infrastructure fell apart. But fear not, YouTube is a glorious and wondrous thing.

As for the AIDS subplot, the character in question was Jesse, played by Rob's little brother (and absolute superior as an actor) Chad Lowe, also the former Mr. Hillary Swank. Interestingly, HIS first job was a six episode NBC sitcom in late 1984 called SPENCER (*not* for hire!), about a teenage misfit with an attitude--a show I LOVED during its all-too-brief run (along with the slightly longer lived Jason Bateman vehicle IT'S YOUR MOVE, about a teenage con artist--and BOTH of these shows predated Ferris Bueller by about 2 years, incidentally).

I recently found 4 of the 6 Spencer episodes on YouTube and was surprised to learn that Spencer's date in the episode I remembered best was none other than Terry "Jadzia Dax" Farrell, while his nerdy best friend was played by Grant Heslov--who just picked up an Oscar for producing Argo.

So what does this prove? My Clavin-like pop-culture knowledge? My need to get more of a life? The interconnectedness of all things?

All of the above, sir, all of the above.

I was looking at the google earth pictures of Pahrump. The place is really spread out surrounded by lots of empty desert land filled with sagebrush.

I was amused to find a Bell Vista Avenue on the map.
Here's something I just found.

The man in the tree

4 Comments Posted by Dan on February 8, 2013
Back in the mid 90s, when I was doing some graduate work along with getting my PharmD, I was a frequent visitor to the Art Bell web site.  I remember listening to Art Bell on his Coast To Coast radio show, which aired on AM radio in the middle of the night.  This, obviously, was back in the days when I didn’t need sleep and wasn’t ready for bed at 8:30PM like I am now.  Anyway, the first thing I ever remember hearing on Art Bell’s show was the theory that a UFO was accompanying Comet Hale-Bopp on its trip past Earth, a fraud that ultimately culminated in the Heaven’s Gate suicide.  As is the case with most paranormal things, I desperately wanted to believe in the Saturn-like object following Comet Hale-Bopp, but the rational part of me knew that it was not so.
So after I listened to Art Bell a little bit, I managed to find my way to his web site.  At the time, there was a gallery completely devoted to ghost photos.  As a kid, I was fascinated with ghosts â€" my favorite of all time being the Tulip Staircase ghost, although the chandelier always scared me a little more than the actual ghost creeping up along the railing.  Anyway, I was looking through the pages and pages of alleged ghost photos â€" most of which were streaks of lights or orbs or things equally disappointing.  Weren’t ghosts supposed to look like people?  That’s what I always thought at least.
Then I stumbled upon “the man in the tree” and I was seriously freaked out.
I’m not sure why it creeped me out so much â€" probably because it was so unexpected and after looking at all these pictures of things that, in my estimation, were most certainly NOT ghosts, seeing something that looked vaguely human was freaky, to say the least.  I told myself to save a copy of that photo but I never did.  I’ve been looking for that photo ever since.  It’s long vanished from the Coast To Coast web site and, not knowing the title of the photo, the best I could Google was “Art Bell” ghost tree.  You can imagine how many hits THAT got.
This morning, I decided to ask Reddit if anyone knew of this photo.  I posted in the Paranormal subreddit and I swear it didn’t even take 10 minutes before someone had found it.
gallery_14079_40_220753
Creepy, right?  Now, I’m not so naive or gullible to actually think that’s a ghost.  Thanks to the person on Reddit who found it, I’ve not only seen a photo I thought I would never see again, but I’ve also learned a new word.  The above photo is one of the best examples of pareidolia â€" the tendency for the human mind to see significant image where none exist â€" that there is.  The same thing that makes people think a cloud looks like an elephant or that they see the Virgin Mary in their Dorito is what causes us to see this man standing in a tree.
The Internet is a beautiful thing, as well as being creepy as hell.

And here's something that almost made me cry as gas prices continue to go up in California.

Art Bell quit...

Okay, that out of the way so I can "hijack", but you have my eternal respect for the recall of NBC's 1984-85 new additions(both shows getting gassed in '85) It's Your Move trying to build off Silver Spoons success obviously, with a post My Tutor Caren Kaye and pre-Married With Children David Garrison. Spencer being a Saturday night show, debuting on 12/1. Hoping for a bit of nepotistic gold I'd presume.

Now, Spencer For Hire provided us with the flimiest excuse for a day off of school ever. On Friday, Sept 20, 1985, my parochial school in South Boston was closed for the day. Because they were filming Spencer For Hire across the street and needed the parking lot for all of their trucks/trailers. Ultimately, we got a day off of school for a six minute segment of an episode that I believed aired on Jan 7, 1986. I think missing that day of education lead to my "Clavinesque" path which put me in the USPS from 1995-2005.

TV in the 80's(NBC going from laughing stock in '83, with Manimal/Boone/Mr Smith, to Tartikoff's dynastic 1984-1990 run)...those were better times. But I also wasn't an adult...which helped.
Oh..and my cousin went from "Burky" to "Corky" literally overnight. He was 16 the time(I was 14) and you know how nice kids are at that age. His kids are about 2-3 years away from being informed about their father's nickname. Once they're old enough to break balls, I'll be providing the ammo.

It's really weird that this book is listed as an actual printed book with an isbn number and everything and that Amazon says its for sale.

And that several sites say the book is available yet no copies exist.

Will keep you appraised of any new news from Whitley.

It's a hoax but a weird one.

Wow, a hoax book with an ISBN number,.... they did their faking well.  I wonder who's collecting the money from it?  I would suspect whomever is the seller of it at German Amazon, if it's being sold by a private seller.  If not, then German Amazon got conned into thinking it's a real book.

Yes, this thread has jumped the shark. Again. But still, isn't this better than FR stuff?

Anyway thanks for the props, and you have MY respect as well, sir. The Spenser: For Hire story is pretty epic. Me, I got a post-Square Pegs, pre-Sex & The City Sarah Jessica Partridge--er, Parker--visit to my sophomore theater class for a talk/workshop on...well, something or other, I don't remember. There was another actor with her, a 20ish male who'd just done a bit part on Family Ties and he talked about being gay. (This was October 1986 when being out in the industry was still pretty...well, unaccceptable.) I remember this caused no end of sniggers and twitters among my classmates.

In any case, USA ran slightly edited versions of the It's Your Move episodes from 89-92 and I recorded them all, so those have never been far from me. Been meaning to put them all on DVD but haven't gotten round to it. Recently found a torrent with the uncut network versions, though, and was pleasantly surprised to discover that the USA versions were nowhere near as butchered as I thought. Might hybridize them at some point and put them out there since it's unlikely they'll ever see an official DVD release even with Jason Bateman's mid-career resuscitation.

But it was a blast to finally see Spencer again. (When it came back a few months later retitled Under One Roof, it was lame, lame, lame.)

Also regarding the It's Your Move/Married With Children connection...they had the same creators, Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavitt. In many ways IYM's harder edged tone was an absolute precursor to MWC. It was just too tough for mainstream networks in 1984, I guess, though there was the big brouhaha when parents supposedly objected to Jason Bateman basically playing a teenage JR Ewing (rest in peace tonight) and scamming everyone so they retooled the show...ugh. All I can say is, that was 8th/9th grade for me, and that's who I WANTED to be, was that guy.

In any case the Tartikoff era was indeed brilliant and never to be duplicated. I was also thinking of a few other forgotten gems from that era: Sara with Geena Davis & Bronson Pinchot, Buffalo Bill with Dabney Coleman, All Is Forgiven with...um...people whose names I can't recall ATM, Double Trouble with the Sagal Twins (Peg Bundy's little sisters and the twins from Grease 2!), the Cheers spinoff Tortellis, FM with Robert Hayes, and the one that STILL gets me to this day that it was canceled, GRAND, with Michael McKean, Bill's little brother Joel Murray, Pamela Reed, and the GREAT John Neville. That THAT show as cancelled and WINGS ran for years...it's a true cosmic injustice. (Nevermind Crystal Bernard's anti-evolution song--it's real and you can find it on YouTube!)

OK, serious hijacking here, sorry all. But hey, I heard Art Bell quit Coast to Coast AM....
