Art's Show via RSS (i.e. Dogg Catcher, Beyond Pod, Downcast, etc)

I implemented the login authentication as well if anyone wants to help me test it out.  It is pretty simple, just enter your credentials into the podcast app's login screen when you are setting it up.

This is how it looks in Downcast:  https://www.dropbox.com/photos/shared_space/bbZutLLRnxLHtJw

I don't think I broke the url based feeds, but I assume you guys will let me know if I did.  Besides that, I'll leave it as it is for a while so it can be tested.

ChairSpud

Just set it up the new url in the iOS podcast app, was very simple and login worked fine. Maybe me but only the first hour downloaded automatically, did I do something wrong?

Your podcast app is what controls what is automatically downloaded.  It probably defaults to the most recent episode.   Are there a bunch of episodes showing up in the list to manually download?

I added the new feed and have the credentials input into Downcast and it's working well. I flipped the sort order within the app instead of trying to use the reversal string in the URL. Thanks!

sbaustin

I'm an idiot.  If you are going to help me with the login credentials instead of the long URL, you need to use a different URL:

http://pod.kpensar.com/feed

Enter you login info wherever you do that in your podcast app.  Let me know if it works for you.

MV/Liberace!

With the latest instructions, here's the error I get in beyondpod:

http://pod.kpensar.com/feed
Reason to fail: ClientProtocolException -> MalformedChallengeException - Authentication challenge is empty

I am entering the correct authentication info into the feed settings before attempting to update the feed for the first time. I have tried both the username you log in to the dmrn website with, and the username their system generates for you from your PayPal name.

Damn, I just tested it on beyond pod without an issue.

if i simply click that feed url, it does prompt me for my dmrn credentials, and i do see the feed (in the browser) after entering them.

MV/Liberace!

btw... i'm using beyondpod 3.3.68 as opposed to their horrible new version.  i doubt this would affect things, though.

This is fantastic work and all, but what I truly want out of this thread are detailed instructions to set up a bulletproof automated system to turn on the stream, record it, and stick it in a folder, no matter what.

Then I want it to make me a sandwich. Let's go, chop chop.

note: I hereby rescind my request for forum flair that indicates that my patience is limitless. Thanks in advance.

Yes, when I tap unplayed only the first hour of the last show appears but tapping the feed button all episodes back to July 31'st appear and yes they can be played/downloaded. But when I manually mark them as unplayrd they still do not appear in the list of unplayed episodes and once I download the missing hours 2 and 3 they then appear in the list of unplayed. Seems like strange behavior after I've told the podcast app to automatically download either new or unplayed episodes. Maybe having both old and new feed setups running concurrently caused the behavior? Have since deleted the podcast with the old configuration

I may try your new feed on beyond pod later today and if so will report back.

I have got to say, the people on this site are in my opinion some of the smartest people on the Planet, even though you can be a rough group if crossed I have met some of the best most talented people here in my life. I am so proud to be a member.

From MV, Rossy, Redacted, Jaz, now sbaustin and so many with talent. The group as a whole has helped so much with the effort to get this show on the road and given so much support with the Blitz that I can just not thank you all enough. I know many have worked behind the scenes, thank you from my Heart.

Art

SB, just in case you haven't seen this yet, quite a compliment!

ChairSpud

Just tried same version of beyond pod as MV (3.30.0.68) and get the same error message.

GravitySucks

Tried the new feed today, it opened up my default iPad podcast app and the shows all showed up back to July 31.  Got them all downloaded.  Some of the show up multiple times in the feed, but I didn't download the dupes.

Everyone thanks for your feedback.  I have a few things to share, mostly good but also some changes:

* My web app will become official soon, been working with Art and Keith about it and testing it a bit more.
* The URL is going to change so at some time in the future you'll have to make that change too, probably sometime this week
* The original link method will be deprecated.  This means that I can not guarantee that will continue to work.  The ability to generate a link is going away for sure. I'm not sure if the legacy links will continue to work as a matter of policy.  I'll do my best to see if we can keep them for you guys that might need it and helped me out.
* I know this thread is getting kind of long, but any feedback like it works, it doesn't work along with the os (android/ios) and app name would be extremely helpful!!
* A big thanks to everyone for their help.

I will be making some changes to the feed so you might see some weird stuff going on in the next couple hours (7PM to 9PM Central).

This is so cool much better than downloading and syncing to my iphone. I logged in to the time travel page. Then I downloaded Downcast and logged in with the link provided. The oldest show I see is Grant Cameron... How do I get it to go back to Graham?

All my favorites are coming back first Art Bell then Berkeley Breathed next the X Files. All is well with the world.

Thanks Art, Keith, Sbaustin, and BellGab.

Thanks for letting me know.  We are going to put a list of podcast app's that work with the feed as not all of them support authenticated feeds (looking at you pocket casts).

I'm not sure what amount of archives will be available at first.  For now will be the current shows.

I deleted the three from last night about 20 minutes ago and refreshed and they came back. It's now just after 5pm here and a refresh did not get them again, so it looks like that got it. I'll try again later to confirm. Interestingly, the Bigfoot show hasn't tried to redownload at all today. Maybe that shifting URL only happens for the first few hours? Anyway, thanks again. This is great!

The feed was going through some flux last night as I was making some changes to how it is generated..  Because the links expire it is a little tricky.  They get regenerated every time you pull a feed or access the webpage with your browser.

Any progress on Pocket Casts? FYI, just sent an email thru the Pocket Casts app with the error message and requesting they look into why their app doesn't work while apps from Apple and Downcast do with the MitD feed. Hope you don't mind that I mentioned you as programming the RSS feed.

MV/Liberace!

I don't think this project is necessary any longer, as they have an official, working rss feed for mitd now.

Pocket Cast does not support authenticated feeds.  You'll need to choose a different podcast app unfortunately.   http://www.shiftyjelly.com/support/pocketcasts#11

I recommend DownCast personally.

That is the new domain and my old one will probably go away although I may use it for testing purposes.

Thanks.

I see now, had already tried encoding user/pass in the feed URL and that didn't work but you probably already knew that.

Now I wonder if the App Store will refund my Pocket Casts purchase so I can buy DownCast?

sbaustin

New update.  The old encrypted url method has been removed.  My old domain will be taken down today, so please use the official RSS feed going forward:

http://rss.darkmatterdigitalnetwork.com/mitd
http://rss.darkmatterdigitalnetwork.com/osom

On a separate topic, if your podcast app does NOT work with authentication (beyondpod v3 or pocketcast), try it with the following structure:

http://my@email.com:password@rss.darkmatterdigitalnetwork.com/mitd

Let me know if you have any questions.

i can't get mitd or osom to work on podcast addict. i have  other paid subs on (artie lange) and working..any help?

I'm going to try to have a solution for this today.  It might be a little custom but I think we can make it work.

I love this shiny new feed.
I'm a little too bleary eyed first thing in the morning to manually maneuver to whatever part of the show I've missed.
Thanks for doing this Sbaustin!

sbaustin

Ok, I just pushed a fix for those other podcast programs that were having issues.

You can try the following:

* http://rss.darkmatterdigitalnetwork.com/mitd   if your app allows or supports login
* http://email@domain.com:password@rss.darkmatterdigitalnetwork.com/mitd
* http://email__domain.com:password@rss.darkmatterdigitalnetwork.com/mitd

In the event your domain or email contains two underscores, use this last version:

* http://email___domain.com:password@rss.darkmatterdigitalnetwork.com/mitd

If your domain or email contains three underscores I think you might be screwed.
