This is great sbaustin. Thanks so much. Using Pock Casts to pull feed.
The only thing to note, while using Pocket Casts only the third hour of each show appears.

They actually just appeared. Took a few extra minutes. We're all good. = ) Thanks again. This IS GREAT! 8)

MV should Knight you for this good deed.

...that's a ceremony I'd rather not witness  :o

(The Royal Scepter, etc...)

Wow. Great job. Although I'm one of the, apparently, very few who likes to manually download stuff, or record it live, and don't like anything "automatically" updating, downloading, etc on my phone or computer I wanted to say thanks. Art and his team should contact you and make this "official" if they won't/can't come up with their own system for those who like RSS.

sbaustin

Everyone, Thanks for the feedback.

I emailed Keith and will let you know what he says. Also just wanted to point out that the links to the mp3 files that get generated from mitd expire so if you have trouble downloading an episode you'll need to refresh your feed (pull down on screen/etc) so that new links get generated by the mitd site. I'll update my original post with that info when I'm in front of a computer.

Nice job sbaustin!

Just entered the url from your feed generator in Pocket Casts for ios and as my first time with RSS it wasn't too difficult. Normally I use Stitcher but unfortunately it will not handle RSS. FWIW I had to reverse the order using your ?reverse=1 string to make things look right. Can't wait to see things work tomorrow morning.

Stitcher isn't really an all purpose podcast app.  I use downcast(ios) and beyond pod (android ). Both are excellent. The built in ios podcast app seems to have come a long way as well. I was pleasantly surprised as it was the first I tested with and used to royally suck.

HairRaiser

Thanks for the rss tool! I'm using Downcast and the reverse flag. Has anyone else seen the app re downloading episodes multiple times? Last night's show has loaded on three separate refreshes and I haven't listened to any of the pieces yet. I doubt it's the feed itself, rather something to do with downcast not recognizing things correctly. It's a minor issue, but thought I'd ask, thanks!

sbaustin

You'll prob want to turn off the auto refresh. The actual links to the files change each hour to prevent piracy so the app is prob trying to get the new ones . I'll see if I can determine what downcast is using to detect the change to prevent that.

After a little research it was a choice between pocket casts and downcast, and I liked the ui better on the former and for Android picked beyond pod, glad to hear its a good choice.

I looked at the apple pod app but couldn't get it to work with your feed generator plugging your URL in the search box but it did nothing.

I just pushed a change to the site that I think will fix the issue.  In my testing I had to remove the existing episodes first as they will have different identifiers as the newly downloaded ones.  Anyways, if you can either delete everything and/or unsubscribe/resubscribe and see if it fixes it for you.

By chance does your URL have any weird characters in it like %,&, or ?

No nothing like that, should I omit the http://?

sbaustin

You would copy and paste it exactly like it shows with the http...  My url works fine in the ios podcast app on my device, very strange.  If it works with downcast/beyond pod not sure might be related to the other app.

Works flawlessly with my IOS podcast ap. Automatic downloads, correct sequence, no breaks between segments.

Thanks so much!

ChairSpud

It just worked and downloading shows right now.

Thanks again.

I'm guessing each app has its own policy for determining if an episode is new or not.  Some might look at the pubDate,  others the GUID, or the URL to the file/etc.  Its kind of a guess by my part to make sure the app isn't wasting bandwidth.  Hopefully my latest change doesn't break anything for anyone else.

I deleted the three from last night about 20 minutes ago and refreshed and they came back. It's now just after 5pm here and a refresh did not get them again, so it looks like that got it. I'll try again later to confirm. Interestingly, the Bigfoot show hasn't tried to redownload at all today. Maybe that shifting URL only happens for the first few hours? Anyway, thanks again. This is great!

sbaustin

The shifting URL happens every time you reload the MITD page.  You can see this by doing a view source.  What happens is they are smartly generating a link to each show that expires after X minutes so you can't share the links. This is to generally avoid bandwidth charges.

On a separate topic, I may change the app to use the podcast apps' built in login instead of the specialized and long URL that is being generated now..  What this *might* mean is you'd have to change the podcast feed URL to a standard one (like pod.kpensar.com/feed) and enter your credentials into your podcast app.  This process might be easier for people or maybe offer both approaches.  Anyone have thoughts on this?

jimg

It has stopped working on Pocket Casts. I get an error telling me know that I "don't have permission".
I unsubscribed, resubscribed, and did a ritualistic dance to no avail. (I can share error screens if it helps.)

SO I subscribed through the native IOS podcast app and it works like a dream. 8)

Thanks again for all the work sbaustin.

That sounds like it would be great for mass use and exactly what Keith and co need for launching it as a platform.

Keith and I have been in contact.. It is really a trivial change for me to make, I'll probably do it later today.  The reason I thought of the encrypted URL first was from how podcast ufo's platform (getjoyride.com) works.  I think most apps have the ability to provide a login so like you said it might be a better route.

ChairSpud

So then at some point today we'll all need to re-subscribe using a new url and login thru the podcast app using our existing time traveler username and password, is that correct?

If so will you inform us in advance with instructions on how to make the change on our devices?

Absolutely and I'll leave both methods up for a while so nothing breaks.

GravitySucks

I got it to work with both RSS Radio and Pocket Casts, thanks to the help from SB.

If this works for you, make a donation, this is the first workable solution we have had 3 weeks in.  It might take a step or two, but it is much cleaner than the DM site.

For some reason I have not been able to figure out how to get it to work with the native iPad podcast app, but I am a happy camper.

FWIW I just kept trying last night and this morning maybe 5 times and then all of a sudden this afternoon it worked.

I agree too, this is a simple quick fix for the podcast problem thanks to SB.

GravitySucks

Finally figured it out on my iPad.. Had to paste the URL into the "Seacrh my Podcasts" box. Works now!
