Art's Show via RSS (i.e. Dogg Catcher, Beyond Pod, Downcast, etc)

Waco Kid

I've scanned the whole thread and I'm not sure I understand what the current wisdom is on getting Beyond Pod to download MITD episodes. Would anyone care to summarize?

I replaced the '@' in my username with two underscores in both the Special Settings section and in the long-string approach (with username:password) to the feed URL. No special characters in my password. But still getting the "some episodes failed to download" error message. I can see the episode info, and it streams fine, just won't download.

Thanks.

sbaustin

Download the beyond pod beta.

Add the feed URL:  http://rss.darkmatterdigitalnetwork.com/mitd
On that screen touch the section that says advanced (I think it is advanced).
Find the part with login/pass and enter them in normally.

Now the feed should work fine.  You just need to refresh the feed (pull down) before downloading.

I've tried to contact them 3 times. They don't respond so my recommendation is use the beyond pod beta. Or send a support request to them to try and get their attention.

Anything new stirring? Beyondpod dl only works for now. :)

sbaustin

Yes, stirring maybe you'll get a whif soon!

I smell what you're cooking.

My RSS feed list only goes back to the Richard Dolan show when viewing with the iOS podcast app.  So I went to the website and logged in to listen to Graham Hancock and I realized that it would be really nice to have a searchable database eventually. It's going to get pretty hard to find stuff at some point .

Any progress with DoggCatcher? Is there a coordinated means by which users of DoggCatcher can contact its developers in a fashion designed to draw attention to this problem? Suggestions?

if somebody wants a tool to download MITD for windows..

I'm sure there are some podcast apps for windows although I couldn't tell  you if any of them work. Unfortunately the Windows phone userbase is extremely small at this time.  As a windows user (not phone), I hope they do turn it around.

I wrote something myself, specifically for MITD feed, I can put it up here.  wrote it because I don't like using podcast software on my phone (crappy data plan) so I download first then transfer to phone.

I regularly listen to 23 podcasts. Art's is the only one that won't allow me to stop listening, and then return to the point where I left off. Instead, my entire library of episodes is refreshed, and I have to manually find the point I left off. It's not impossible, just annoying.

I've been playing around with the PortableApps.com version of gPodder on Windows7 with excellent results. Works fine downloading the RSS feed, also have it downloading my DAR.fm recording of the MitD show too so I get both the Time Traveler and streamed shows for when I want to hear Art's bumper music.

Ditto for me too, however the large difference is those 22 other podcasts do not have expiring links.  If the podcast app doesn't handle the links updating very well, it will have issues.  The only android app that I have found that works well for me is Beyond Pod.  They updated their app in the play store yesterday which probably means that one will work without having to download the beta.  If someone can confirm that for me, it would be appreciated (my android device is at home).

I'd like to post this response I've sent to a few people over email.  It includes a video on how to add the podcast to beyond pod:

First, the best app that I've found so far on Android is one called Beyond Pod which I see you have already tried.    Unfortunately, you'll need to either sign up for their BETA program or download the APK.   The easiest way is to just sign up for their beta program via their webpage, but first install BeyondPod from the play store.

After installing Beyond Pod,  Sign up for beta with instructions instructions at this link:  http://www.beyondpod.mobi/Android/BETA/

After joining the beta from the link above, it should update your app to version 48 or above.

Now, the following video will walk you through how to add the feed to beyondpod and download an episode:

Dammit bellgab, you got me hooked on RSS! I even found a solution for my issues!

I've never really been happy with the Android podcast players, they insist on storing the file in your primary storage, rather than the sd card you bought for such a purpose. Also, most don't have a way to normalize the audio.

No one records a show (or song) at the same volume gain. I see a range from 70db to 99db. Personally I use mp3gain to adjust this to 98, so I don't have to adjust the volume on my car (or any other stereo) between shows.

I have found one Windows tool that works. I did not even expect the Zune player to be of use for this. I tried Miro, and a few others and they all were upsetting/annoying/unsatisfactory.

Now I use my Zune player to subscribe, by copying the RSS link, often the same one used for iTunes. The Zune player even asks you for the credentials if prompted!

Since I will not use a Windows Phone, I don't currently have an auto sync. Yes, it does go to my rather old and functional Zune30gb, not that I use it for that. That function is not as important for me as I normalize my audio before I add it to the phone's sd card.

So once I have easily subscribed with Zune, and the files downloaded, I normalize them and copy to my Note 2. So much easier not hunting them down! Also, I don't have to worry about finding my phone's primary storage full.

My next steps are to get normalization scripted, and set up a semi-automatic transfer to my phone's sd card. That is when things calm down at work. :)

I'm having the same problem myself. Which email address should I contact about this? I did send an email out earlier, but not sure if it was the one that goes to Keith.

I also had to switch to BeyondPod after Podcast Addict which supports secure feeds got blocked from downloading anything but the newest episode.

You'll need to contact Keith as it is a policy not related to the RSS feed.   This page has a link to this email: http://darkmatterdigitalnetwork.com/about-us/

Thank you, it appears I sent it to the proper email address, granted with the title RSS Feed Problems, so hopefully they'll take a look at it.

Have they said why they limit what the feed pulls in? I seem to recall another podcast saying it was a bandwidth issue.

That would be my guess as well.  You can download them manually from the site but that is a huge pain in the butt.

Yeah, it was horrible when it was split into three separate parts initially.

I didn't mind the three separate files so much, but if you want to download the archives...... I was thinking about writing a chrome extension to put all the download links for the prior episodes on one page but haven't been motivated to do it.

I'd certainly like it. It would be useful when getting an episode on mobile

Wouldn't work on mobile. Chrome extensions only work in the desktop browser.

Heard back from Keith.

We limit the feed to the last 20 episodes. Most podcasts do this. There has to be a limit somewhere, otherwise the updates will start taking longer and longer.

To which I suggested
QuoteI appreciate the quick response. I understand the concerns about update speed, I'd just like to say I'd be fine with a separate feed that was explicitly stated to have all the episodes, with a warning of hey this update may take a while, existing alongside the normal 20 episode RSS feed.

gfanikf

Good news. It seems they're open to the idea, just unsure how to do it. Any ideas or suggestions?

QuoteI don't know how to do that, with my only ONE RSS feed. It would probably have to be built manually.
