I've known people who looked as old as Methuselah, but I don't think that was their goal...

That is precious; these days it'd wind up in a food fight I think.

Also I think this is the time for geese due to the old Martinmas tradition which nobody in this country remembers any more.  Maybe a hint of cultural retention!

Thanks for the Martinmas mention, K.  I never had it in my mind to forget it, so I looked it up.  Sounds like a fun time, though not so fun for cows and geese.

Heating varnish on the stove. Seems like a good plan! Once again car accidents without much injury. And other accidents. K_Dubb, Pate, and MalachaiMartini will be interested in the result of the embezzling baker- off with the truck, cash, pastry, and bread!

I can picture a modern day looter coming out of a store with a big screen tv and sneakers.  "Shit just laying around in there, bro!  Don't belong to nobody."

Great little vignette!  If I am hearing things right this recording seems to match the listed instrumentation except for the banjo-mandolin (whatever that is), though I suppose one could be strumming in there somewhere.

Also the house of "the Nelson woman" seems like a fun place.

I assumed he played both for different songs or parts of songs. But maybe there is some weird combination instrument? Maybe like a mandolin string and fret arrangement but with the drum back like a banjo? Yep, a quick search reveals:

"Wednesday, March 5, 1919, Amoo Caldron No. 2 seceded from the “Supreme Caldron,” which was mostly being operated out of Chicago. The ladies in Rock Island promptly declared themselves the new Supreme Caldron and Amoo Caldron became No. 1. On November 18, 1920, Mrs. Vashti H. Bollman, acting Supreme Enchantress of the "new" Supreme Caldron notes that Mrs. Josephine Mace, Mysterious Enchantress of Amoo No. 2, withdrew Amoo from the parent organization in Chicago. It is reported that she was brought up on fraternal charges, to which she pled guilty, surrendering the charter of Amoo No. 2 in the process. However, she refused to give up the name “Amoo Caldron” and used it to “usurp the name Supreme Caldron from the parent organization.” The Amoo group began opening new Caldrons, getting up to at least five with the institution of Hapac Caldron No. 5 in 1920.[
