I love the $3,000,000 of missing whiskey from the government building. I suppose this is why some of them dumped it and broke the barrels open rather than seizing it and putting it in a warehouse... It almost seems like it was purposefully done to enrich certain members of the "law."

I was thinking that Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. was involved in it somehow.  Weren't the Kennedys made rich by selling bootleg whiskey during prohibition?

I seem to recall something about that. I also recall something about Trump's grandfather getting rich running a brothel in (Dawson city?) The first that I had seen it was in the documentary "Dawson city, frozen in time."

Actually, it seems about your speed. Worth watching... https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5215486/

The moral appears to be that 100 years ago, all accidents were survivable. But even back then, smoking killed. ;)

*Also, I am reminded of "Digby O'Dell, the friendly undertaker?*

*What was it that he attended? Associations / meetings / events of "the undertakers pallbearers and ?????"

An older brother was a mortician once.  I remember visiting him a number of times.  He lived in a deluxe apartment above the funeral home.  Everything was normal there, tv, eats, nice views out the windows.  Then he'd take me downstairs and show me the bodies.  I never could figure out how he was able to sleep at night.

How long was he in that career? It kind of sounds like a smaller town or a nice, private home. It seems (like everything else today) most have gone corporate and are just businesses. No on site, live in person. Not really a funeral "home" anymore. More of a money making chapel without the religion.

I don't think dealing with the dead is a problem for some. I ended up dressing a couple of people after they passed, and taking out a a few tubes to clean them up and get them ready and I have had two caskets (with bodies) in my personal vehicles. It is a long story- and not really suited for Bellgab. But it is not as strange as it may seem...

I ended up friends with an undertaker after one. She thought I was a murder (from my phone call,) and I thought she was interesting as well (and she made a very sweet offer that is probably also not BG material.) And we are still friends after these years.

Anyhow, I found an example of the Digby quotes. It was always "Undertakers, Embalmers and Pallbearers". In this one, he is head of the U.E.P.B.O.M.C…

O’DELL: It is I…Digby O’Dell…the friendly undertaker…
RILEY: Oh…I didn’t see ya, “Digger”…
O’DELL: Greetings, Riley…you’re looking…you look horrible!
RILEY: “Digger”…I’m at the end of my rope…
O’DELL: Then I’d better go along with you…
RILEY: You see…I was the captain in the Community Chest drive…
O’DELL: Bully for you! As I always say, the good that you do unto people will come back to you in the end…and so will the people…
RILEY: Yeah, I know…that’s why I wanted to make good at this job…
O’DELL: Why, I’m an old hand at charity…I’m president of a group that regularly sends a parcel of food to needy families…it’s the U.E.P.B.O.M.C…
RILEY: The U.E.P.B.O.M.C.???
O’DELL: The Undertakers, Embalmers and Pallbearers Box of the Month Club…
RILEY: Well, I…I like the Community Chest better…I messed everything up…I found a hundred and forty-eight dollars in the house…by mistake, I turned it in under my own name…you see, my wife hid it in this box and I thought it was my money…
O’DELL: Oh, Riley…you deserve to be chastised…always snooping…
RILEY: What’s wrong? Didn’t you ever look in a box to see what’s in it?
O’DELL: Let’s not talk shop…

It's not as strange as wearing an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on one's back--that's for sure.

Funny how the internet has changed things. Toss a help wanted ad up online, and 24 applicants would be abysmal. For the most menial, low paying job you get dozens in a day.

This is like some kind of tv show, like Murder, She Wrote or Miss Marple. Yokel Chief "well I guess he had a heart attack while milking Bessie." Visiting old lady "Uh, officer I couldn't help but notice a large hole in his chest and that his shirt bears marks that would appear to be gunpowder residue and singe marks. He also was receiving threatening messages regarding his support for dairy price fixing." Deputy Yokel "She's right boss, look at this here shell casing." Chief Yokel "Look ma'am. Thanks for your help but we might not be big city but we know how to investigate a murder." Deputy Yokel "But I though you said his heart attacked him..." Chief Yokel "that will be enough, deputy, get on the horn and get ol' Doc out there and tell him to bring his Polaroid camera. I swear if you weren't my wife's cousin I'd...."

Now you've got me thinking that Chief Yokel sounds exactly like Andy Griffith.

I'm glad you drew attention to that. I had missed that he was shot to death and "thought to have died from heart disease." Wow.
