Honestly I think she sounded incredibly centered tonight - I've been doing podcasts for months and I'm still not very comfortable speaking on a mic.

It's easy to forget that Art spent -many years- at this before he started Coast to Coast.  Red's got the right stuff so she'll just keeping getting better.  Once Art got so comfortable with his show that he could let it all hang out with flair and bravado, he became riveting to listen to.  Red's still in the honeymoon phase; eventually we'll feel like we're reading her mind throughout an interview like we did with Art, and that'll be a lot of fun.  We haven't seen Red's sassy side yet; give it time.

But I think Art'll be back sooner than we think.

I appreciate how supportive and complimentary everyone is being towards Heather, but I think she has two huge obstacles to overcome in a very short time.

Assuming that the standards in this job are similar to broadcast (considering the need for a paid subscriber base and advertisers, I'd say so), problem one is voice quality/delivery and the personality it projects. This can be refined and improved upon, particularly by trained actors, but it can't be radically altered for the typical radio personality.

Heather comes off to me like a morning drive-time news reader or maybe a morning show side-kick, in the way that Robin is Howard Stern's lighter side. If there's such a thing as sounding and being too nice, sedate and positive for the subject matter, I think that's the case with Heather and the paranormal.

The other obstacle is the same one any replacement would have on MITD -- she's not even close to being Art Bell. Long John Nebel, Barry Gray, Barry Farber? Yes, but they're all dead and gone. George Knapp on a good night? Maybe.

So that leaves us right where it always does. We need Art back and pretending or believing otherwise is not the answer. Heather knows this. Art knows this. So let's be honest and direct about it. Pleasant, by all means, but honest and direct.
I think she knows this is a 30 day gig, personally i dont think Art should come back, Red will do fine in life whatever she chooses, remember she did have a job before all this, she has many skills.
That being said as i have stated in previous posts the market is saturated with paranormal shit now, if thats what you want you have many other options.

best of all she can tell bono (from u2) to "fuck off, i was Art Bells producer , and Art then entrusted his show to me."

I think that Heather did a really good job with Tobias. I emailed her and Keith telling them the same thing.  I hope others will also send them encouragement.  We still have a show and as time goes on Heather will get even better.

Yeah she's ok but the professional competition will phase her & mitd out most likely.  You just can't compete in the big leagues with seasoned professionals. She should definitely create a podcast & try to recruit listeners while she has the mic & all these ears.  It's a wasted opportunity otherwise.  Behind the podcast mic she can get her sea legs & then who knows.

Juan

Her greatest need for improvement is in how she asks questions. Like most interviewers, she frequently rambles through a question.  The very good interviewers keep it direct and short.

Can't get the stream huh. Well, you can grab the show tomorrow. I'd do ASL for you but i don't know how :)

How about the Listen Line - good if you have unlimited cell minutes. I assume it's still working, but who knows for how much longer.

Keith has to be really butthurt about this whole thing. He really put a lot together. Maybe he should have paid attention to Howard Stern and not invested so heavily in "loser podcasts":

Great show last night!  I didn't notice any hiccups with the stream or lost calls or whatever technical.  The guest and host had a great back and forth.  I even came away with a few new stories that kinda creeped me out a bit.  That one about the "refilling hole" was awesome.  I love tales about death or gravesites where the grass grows in a pattern or not at all or whatever.

good stuff heather YOU DID GREAT! keep it up.

Stern is a douchebag old man who still thinks it's the 90's.  Of course he will shit on podcasts.

Heather, you had a fantastic show last night.  Have Tobias on as often as possible.  I'm sure he could fill numerous shows with the experiences he has had and stories he has heard.

I don't like the new way that the thread is being done.  In all likelihood, Art will be back so please have a different thread for each night. At least consider it, MV.

Okay - Just listened to last night's show and I have to say that Heather did a very good job - still way superior to Snoory who I no longer listen to. Well done Heather for staying cool under the pressure of being thrown in at the deep end and for asking some great questions. For the time being I am going to remain a Time Traveler. I just hope the show can grow and affiliates can get to hear the show for themselves because I think she has a chance of doing well if terrestrial radio pick the show up. MITD with Heather definitely has potential!

Horn's Up for Heather At The Helm

WOOOO HOOOOOO!

Wayne's World! Party Time! Excellent!

Gruntled

I enjoyed Heather and the show.
I'm glad she is on and hope it continues.
Of course I want Art to come back but I'm glad MITD is an option.
I have not cancelled my subscription and don't intend to.
ps. Glad I found this thread, took a minute and I was worried there was none.
This forum is worth the $5.00 a month.
MITD a pleasant bonus. ;)

Yeah.  Not bad for a girl.

I did not listen to Friday nights show but have just listened to last night's show with Heather and I think she actually did a very good job! She stayed cool (considering she has been thrown in at the deep end) and asked some excellent questions. Still way way better than Snoory who I quit listening to years ago. Well done Heather, I think you will develop into a great broadcaster once you have settled down into a routine. I am not cancelling my Time Traveler subscription.

A lot of people are going to think GS is being a sexist jerk because of this remark. Keep in mind that GS is from Texas. This is progressive liberal level stuff. Relatively speaking.

From your lips to God's ears. Anyway, I listened last night and Heather was amazing. She sounded like she had been doing this for a while. She's already better than Lee Cigar and Connie Willis and she's only got 2 shows under her belt. The guest makes a big difference as well. There was a good back and forth between the two. Some guests will have a conversation with the host and others need to be drawn out. Last night's guest Tobias had interesting stories to tell.

Hey I am also from Texas and I might say "Art Bell does a good job for an old man" :-)

I couldn't say it any better, and in fact her radio career has already begun as the show was carried live in Toronto which is a huge market. Nice show Heather!

Excellent show last night!  No better place at the moment, as the board got rearranged...

People dont know something about Heather, she knows music and guitars, she is a regular contributor to the fret files podcast.
This girl is special, she always was when she was just known as Redacted, i also may be one of the few that actually knows what she looks like and what her past is.
This girl is much more talented than some may give her credit for

so she would know then that one of the major mistakes a radio host can make is talking over the vocals of a song as it fades in or out?

LOL,,there's a very well known Radio host in the UK who does that. About 7 million listeners a day for the last 35 years. Hasn't hurt his prospects.

haha, good one. But seriously, anyone think art would pass the show off to someone capable of becoming a bigger draw than he was on it? Of course not. She was there, and willing to step in and take one for the team by driving this thing home.

+1.  Way to go, Heather.  Keep hope alive.  If I'm an Art nuthugger, I must be a Heather hiphugger now.  ;)

Ciardelo

If Art can have his tarts, Heather can have her hiphuggers. lol That's good stuff right there.

If Art comes back, that's what we'll do.

I enjoyed the show. Worth $5 to me. $5 isn't going to break most people. Hope the show stays looking forward to NDEs.

Go Heather! Do the best you can.
