I liked most of what I heard tonight although I must admit my mind was not as tuned in as usual... Another in and out of focus show for me.  If a call seems like its BS or I don't find it very interesting I just tune out and wait for the next one.  Arts commentary as usual was great I tend to always listen when I hear his voice come in during or after the schtories.  Of course, how can you not listen to a voice like his?

RedMichael

To me the free listening alternative kind of sounds like an "out" to doing a radio show.

Sirius' business model is: pay to listen and you can't just choose a few things. Exactly like cable companies. So Sirius definitely isn't some evil corporation trying to keep everyone down. Free streaming = less customers. I went to Bell's website and already counted a few who said "If I get a free stream, I am cancelling my sirius account." Well someone at sirius is going to get word of that too.

So since we all have common sense and know that Sirius will not allow a free alternative, is this going to turn into an eventual "They won't let me have it so I told them to shove it."? I mean this isn't premrat fucking someone over, this is a company with a business model that existed years before DM. SO if that happens, I would have to assume it was a plan long before it happens.

I hope not, I love DM and hope to keep listening.

So how was it? I was too scared to listen, and so just hid under the covers.

I doubt that SiriusXM will allow Art to stream live on his site because that would make the entire satellite radio business model fall apart.  If you're listening live for free, there's no reason to get a subscription anymore.  I'm not sure what Art was thinking on this one.

Then again, SiriusXM did let Opie and Anthony have their own free weekly podcast, so I guess it isn't impossible...

williedee

I'm curious to see what happens. I'd say the biggest decider will be looking at how many subscribers joined and continued to pau for their siriusxm subscription when art came back. Or I'm sure they have metrics for looking at subscribers that only listen to 1 show. If either of those numbers are substantial (I'd say they'd have to be at least in the tens of thousands), then I doubt they'd let him stream.

I'm very curious to see his ratings too

I really like Art on SiriusXM over radio. The quality is superb. The only thing I don't like is the Keep Listening button on the app. I understand why it is there but it makes me crazy. Also On Demand is the coolest feature. I like being able to listen to any of the shows when I have time. Thanks to this I haven't missed a show yet.

Great to have Art on Halloween again.

What is even creepier for me is that while listening to Art there were tons of emergency vehicles on my street. Apparently someone just collapsed and died on the sidewalk sometime around midnight. Geez... Poor soul.

Yeah, I don't get it either. Art had to have come into this with eyes-wide-open about what SiriusXM is. They are a subscription-based service that offers premium content for a premium price. As much as we all love Art, what does SiriusXM have to gain by allowing Art to siphon off current and potential paying subscribers for a free stream on ArtBell.com? Nothing, as far as I can tell.

As a side note, I listen every night on the iOS app and also listen during the day sometimes on my Android phone. I have never once had a streaming error. Are people only having problems with SiriusXM's desktop player?

$75k per year for 3 years?! Where did that number come from?! Howard Stern, even before he was VP, was getting close to $150 MILLION a year, and that figure is even higher now. $75,000 per year is essentially doing the show for free. That's one of the most unbelievable things I have ever heard concerning Art. I'd need to see proof of that to believe it.

I have no idea why Sirius would even consider streaming his show for free. It makes no sense at all. None. There is absolutely zero upside for them with him doing that.

If nothing else, Sirius is going to need to draw a line in the sand here, and I don't blame them. What's next if they give in to this? Art then has the right to sell the stream to whoever he wants, say... Terrestrial radio? There are better odds of me time traveling than Sirius letting him stream his show for free. I love Art to death, and listen every night. I'll be gutted if he leaves the air again, but I just think that Art HAS TO KNOW this is unrealistic... Maybe they'll let him do it for a month or two in order to grab more listeners from TR, but I doubt even that.

Whatever is happening over there... I find it hard to believe that something like infrastructure failure wasn't factored into their dealing in the first place. Not to mention, again, Stern has over 20 million of his own listeners, and it seems as though all of them are more than able to stream things just fine. Like I said earlier, I know I can. There's more to this than meets the eye, and I really wonder what Art and/or Sirius is going for with this. Art is saying he had many thousands of listeners cancel their subs because of streaming failure... I highly doubt that to be the case. The show is successful enough to have C2C scrambling to hold onto guests and listeners, so this all reeks of things going on behind the scenes.

For the record... The suggestion that Art and Keith are more capable of streaming to millions of listeners than Sirius/XM is laughable to say the least. I love both of those guys, but that's pure BS.

Art released the money figure before his show started.  It may have been in the Knapp interview or the Time magazine article but the figure of 75k for three years was public.

Howard Stern is not a VP of Sirius XM nor a SXM employee.  His production company, 112 Inc, sells his product to SXM and he has programming control over channels H100 and H101.

Howard's first contract, covering 2006-2010 was significantly more than his current one.  When he was renewed for LESS money, he cut his live shows to 3 days a week and always out at four hours, when he used to go 4.5 to 5 hours four days a week.  He has put little to no effort in producing a good product since the contract renewal.  The second, lesser contract was for 3 years with an option for 2 more, expires the end of this year.  To assume that every SXM subscriber is a Stern listener is incorrect.  His audience is small and shrinking.  I think big changes are coming to the Stern show as he eases into retirement...the new house in Florida, Robin's health issues, Stern's laziness and lack of work ethic.

OK I'm the queen of lame who FELL ASLEEP right after Andy's creepy imaginary friend story. (BRAVO on that one, Andy!) So I'm listening to the show now. (Not quite the same in the daylight, the day after Halloween.  >:( )

And I'm trying not to look at any other posts here because I want to hear Art's big announcement with no spoilers.

All that aside, I'm at the part where some weird guy â€" the one whose girlfriend was on the phone at first â€" is mumbling something about a Ouija board and electric blue flashes or something. Once again, I'd like to petition for an Open Lines Gong â€" "Gong Show" style â€" that Art could just whack before he disconnects a lame caller. This one should get it for sure.

That is all.

NoMoreNoory

We took out a Sirius subscription specifically to listen to Art, and have been listening via the iPhone app from Day One with no problems at all, so not thrilled with all this. It seems crazy for Art to sign up to a subscription-based station and then demand free streaming. I don't get it, and I have to say if I was making the decisions at SXM, I know what my reply would be.

Falkie2013

It took forever to upload it, multiple phone calls to verify my account so I could post it and a bit of sleep because it You Tube wouldn't allow me to post it without verifying it but here is my Halloween video, people's voices and all.
I'm really mad at the Ebay seller I bought my video camera from. He's in Arizona and sent it regular mail even though I asked him to send it by a faster means so I could have it by Halloween. It's been a week, he's not responding to messages and who knows when I'll get it.
>:(
I was walking through some really weird spongy stuff and it felt like I was sinking. The owner broke up when I asked what the stuff was.
Next year I'm going to see if the owner will let me come in early and film everything with my video camera. If I don't get it soon, I'll ask Ebay/Paypal for a refund and buy another one and then buy an HD camera later.
Its a long video done on my Iphone. I apologize for the light quality. Light was provided with a jury rigged light from my solar bicycle light. Chain saw noise was provided by a guy done up as the guy from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and got to be really annoying after awhile. I shot lots of clowns so $noory could see them. Will email him the video later.
The video is a long one. I hope you enjoy it. If you're ever in Martinez, Ca ( NOT MY NAME ART ! ) and its Halloween go to the street across from Kaiser's clinic. This guy has been doing this every year for 35 years and its really cool. Sadly he retired the Famous Monsters of Filmland figures. Its sad not to see Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein, The Creature From The Black Lagoon and more any more. He has a huge collection and rotates it every year and adds stuff as well.

Picture of some of the bone fragments, and the incense sent by the Dalai Lama.

Have an open mind people. Just because something sounds fantastic and amazing doesn't mean it's a lie. It's also pretty disappointing to come to a board you frequent and see people calling your wife a liar.

I loved your story. You are very blessed to have something personally sent by the Dalai Lama. I take my hat off to you for helping this lost soul at your home.  For those that can understand why, I am happy.  For the one's that don't get it, that's just their karma, not yours.  You can burn some herb for them too. The one's drawn to the teachings are as rare as a daytime star.
This forum board is no different than anywhere else.  It has it's bafoons and negative people. You can block who you don't want to hear from, and you need a thick skin. I hope you stick around. You sound like good folks.
Thanks for sharing your story. I'm looking forward to hearing more.

Every day, week, month, and year. I damn sure don't have the disposable income to buy a video camera.

Tell you what - YOU send me $30.00. I promise to NOT to pay it back.

So... you think WalMart will have their candy marked down by 9:30 or 10 am tomorrow?  Like the Reeses peanut butter cups?

Errr... asking for a friend

Depends on the Walmart or the Target. Usually within a day or two its all gone. They want to bring in the Christmas stuff.

I bought the video camera from the proceeds of the stock purchases I made 12 years ago. IF I'd been able to get the money sooner because the broker wanted me to fill out a form that they never told me about I'd never have asked anyone for any money on here. It delayed my getting the check from them for 3 weeks or more.
And ... I've already spent a small amount for things for my cell phone. This is an extension of what I need to post videos.

Could you guys create a "Personal Finances Sob Stories" thread somewhere please. This money thing pops up everywhere and it is quite distracting. ???

Wow, that was a strange announcement.
Art's basically asking permission to pirate his own show.
Strange move, Art.  I don't yet understand.

Last year I bought a new Dodge Voyager minivan. It came with a free year subscription to Sirius.
To be honest, Sirius was nice but I could find what I wanted to listen to over regular FM stations so I planned to let the subscription run out and not renew it. But ... when I learned Art was coming back on Air I decided to renew my yearly subscription and download the apt to allow me to listen to his nightly broadcast on my home PC. I haven't missed a show. Thing is ... if I can get it for free I will. I'm quite sure Sirius executives realize this as well. Be careful where thou tread Art. It's a business. You know that my Brother. Peace. Afixer
P.S. Paranormal? I'm not one to actually 'call-in". But years ago ... my wife, her mom and a close friend were thrown out of their chairs ... pinned against a wall and nearly suffocated to death while using a Quija board.

You can find the "genre" on your FM radio, and sometimes an artist you like comes on...but with Sirius, they have a whole other market, for sports, and specific limited run events/channels devoted to a wide range of genres as well and specific artists.  I get both sides of the argument, just feel that peeps are overtly stressing their belief that the free version offered is going to become their exclusive way to listen.  It's only a live show....what if the quality is diminished down from 64kbs to 24kbs...(I KNOW I KNOW Some people just don't care, but for me it makes my ears ring, and I won't listen to a cheaper version just because it's free)

Art knows anyone who doesn't have XM will stream it one way or another, and knows they're likely to not get XM if they don't already have it.
He knows that if he put stream on his website, they would atleast generate revenue towards him/darkmatter/sirius if they could instead do so on his website.
