20131031 - Spooky Matter (Thanks, Steelbot.)

As someone who follows SiriusXM very closely, I would be absolutely shocked if they go along with Art's free streaming demands. The whole reason they signed Art is to have exclusivity on a program with an incredibly loyal fan base that they can leverage into new subscribers - on both the satellite and internet radio platforms. I cannot fathom them basically paying Art to have him do a show that is free to everyone. It goes completely against their business model, particularly in the last 12 months or so.

This has the potential to get really, really ugly. I hope it doesn't.

I like Sirius as well - enjoying the electronic music stations as well as a few others. Art Bell made me jump on getting the subscription but I'll probably keep it anyhow if I can package my car and internet streaming into a cheaper plan.

Keep in mind art is only getting 75,000.
He's working at a extreme discount.

I guess the draw of the internet subscription would be that you can get past shows on demand, pause, rewind, etc. While you'll have to make time to be listening from artbell.com every night live... not everyone can make it every night. Maybe they'll get fed up and buy a subscription?  ???

I bed to sirius is going to start sending to ciece and decist letters to people who stream, and have YT take down the shows people have put up on there.

I see that as being the only selling point to Sirius.

Maybe doing it this way will whet people's appetite for Art enough to want to have all the extra functionality that a Sirius subscription brings. I say maybe but I don't think it will convert enough people for Sirius to be happy.

Then again what do I know?

I don't know why Sirius would want to give the milk away for free.

Will people take out a Sirius subscription if they can get Art for free?

Not sure the free advertising for Sirius based on the streaming of Art's show for free on artbell.com will translate into dollars for Sirius.

The majority of us here took out a Sirius subscription because of Art. Put your hand up if you would have still taken out a Sirius subscription if you could get the show live for free from the website?

I probably would because I work late and usually don't start listening until 10:30.  The on demand feature is attractive too. I'll probably get a radio though.

It is not going to be simulcast on terrestrial radio. The Opie & Anthony thing was a logistical nightmare, and both companies hated sharing content with the other. Who would Sirius even partner with, Cumulus? Hahahahaha

I bet stern wouldent even piss on someone for that ammount of money.

Sirius has 27 million subscribers. I doubt more than a few % listen to Art. That is a few-odd hundred thousand. Peanuts compared to radio when he had tens of millions. He knows his spice rack is limited.. hell, I can feel it, too.. it is obvious. The show is still light years better than C2C, but the magic of his show is the uncanny variety. He was BEGGING callers to rip into Hogue, and not one did, because the variety of callers is severely limited and watered down.

He clearly doesn't want a half-assed show, and I don't blame him. He and we deserve better than dealing with long-winded going-nowhere calls night after night.

If dark matter is aired for free on artbell.com, ill definetly cancel my sirius subscription after a few months. ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!!!

I think this is a jab at C2C. Just a way to cut into their audience(you know for the cheapskates still hanging on to C2C simply cause they love this type of programing but cant or wont pay). Maybe Sirius will agree to C2C goes under then they will magically fix the streaming problems. I am just guessing.  You guys posted lots of creative theories though I am sure one of them is right.

Well, we never had to pay for Art on terrestrial radio.  Also, to really get the crazies calling in, Art needs a wider net.  The more I consider his cryptic message, the more I think that must be it:  he wants to increase the audience, and just give the program away free since people are already stealing it.  If that makes sense.

I'mma schelibratin' tonights!   :o

they simply didn't use profanity during the simulcast, although sometimes things slipped, and there was someone at cbs radio running the delay dump.  every morning after the simulcast ended and it went satellite only, they'd receive a "dump report" from cbs listing all of the comments that were dumped, which they'd read on the air.  some of the things cbs chose to dump were quite silly.

Stern did something similar with the dump reports when he was still on TR. It was very funny when he would bring in the station manager and yell at him about why  they dumped the word boobs or ass.

exactly... and sirius is probably contractually obligated to provide art with reasonable infrastructure to reach his audience.  they've failed.
This seems the most likely scenario to me.  Art's a lifetime technology geek, and the capacity to deliver a functioning infrastructure would have mattered more to him than money when he entered into this contract.

True, were never going to get another mad man markum from sirius. Crazys are cheap and don;t spend money.

Doesn't matter. From SiriusXM's perspective, they are investing in Art Bell to grow SiriusXM - and I don't think it's a stretch to say they few Art as key to growing their Internet radio platform. SiriusXM is not investing in Art to grow Artbell.com.

Again, I hope I am wrong. But this would be so completely counter to SiriusXM's business model that it seems impossible that they would even consider it.

Art wouldn't gamble with his radio show. He's got a plan B and a plan C.

if you quit streaming, you aren't helping art's point because part of the case he's making is that the show is being pirated anyway.

Sirius might be telling Art they're going to go after pirates, and Art doesn't dig that.

420desert

Art is in this for GOOD RADIO, not to make money. He doesn't feel he his getting that, and he is right.

Falkie2013

Perhaps Art feels that Sirius has an obligation to present HIS show without interruption and without glitches and therefore is playing his hand by saying if you can't straighten things out then stream the thing for free until you do.
If one were paying for Sirius as many do, I would think that Sirius would have some kind of implied obligation to present program content without interruption.
AND we have NO idea just what Sirius's agreement with Art may entail. He may well have some type of control clause that he has not divulged yet.
Who knows ?
I think part of it is a cart before the horse situation in that if the glitches were not happening much of the non Sirius streaming would not be happening.
But it probably would to some extent because of the huge fan base that Art's legacy listeners have.
And I would guess that a fair percentage of us are paying for the Sirius stream though one device or another and have told Sirius and Art how upset we are with the continual service interruptions, not only with Art's channel but so many others on the Sirius " network " or whatever one calls it.
This probably gives Art much more leverage than someone else may have.
