Gee, I hate to be a party pooper, but when I read Art's post, all I got from that line about change was that he was referring back to his previous remark about radioactivity - like "we are sitting ok right now as far as the radioactivity not coming our way, but that could all change in the wink of an eye, we could start getting blasted with it and have to suddenly depart from here" - something on that theme.
hmm... i dunno.  that's not quite how it struck me.

Here's something that popped into my mind a couple of minutes ago, this Art Bell Message was timed not for when our thread was slowing down! Look at the calender, it's almost the end of February, which ends a 4-month drought of Art not being on the air. I don't know where this is coming from, space or somewhere else, but Art will announce sometime in March his plans to return to the air! An announcement is coming soon!
are you still standing by this?

i'm with you.  i refer the gang to a previous post of mine.
I agree with your previous post but I'm still betting (hoping!) on a podcast if nothing else.

NOTE TO ANAGRAMMY:
My source is the KEX staff liason to the Portland Art Bell Chat Club. She attended all of our meetings for the group's 9-year run as a group. Remember that KEX was Art's first affiliate, after his first station, KDWN Las Vegas! Portland was always slated to be back-up headquarters for the show should anything happen in the Southern Nevada area, and was going to be show temporary HQ with Ramona's illness of 1994! There are HUGE invested ties between Art Bell and KEX-AM 1190!

NOTE TO MICHAEL V:
We're working in a very positive direction here! Look at the "change message" from Art, and you can see the movement! It's been slowed, the March announce, by all the negotiations needing to take place. These lawyer-types are not very efficient users of time! Art Bell is busting at the seams to tell us something major! There is a very deliberate timeline of Art Bell messages going on here! We all know what a REAL Art Bell Show is, and it's not a Podcast!

Wow, I have so many thoughts on what has developed here in the last few days. So I'm just gonna say this:

I still don't see Art coming back, he's almost 66 years old and to do the show full time again he would have to move back to the United States. To do the show full time from overseas is not realistic. Even on a good night the feed from manila would cut out at least once. Regarding Art's comments about change being in the works? I take this that the AB's are moving to another part of the Philippians. I recall Art saying in one of his final shows that they were seriously considering this. And of course... he's 66 years old. I hate to quote Noory but most 66 year olds are "winding down".

Now on the Flipside and perhaps this is hope speaking but...

Fort Rock seems to have some interesting information. And at times, a little too specific to be made up. Like Art's studio in Hawaii? I never would have made that connection. I find the thing with Kraig Kitchen very interesting. The same day that Art posted the infamous webcam message, Kraig announced is departure from premiere. And now we are talking about c2c changing hands to a new production company?... interesting.

But here is another pepper in the gumbo. I've mentioned another program here a couple times that I have become a big fan of... Red Eye Radio. It's an overnight show in the exact time slot as coast. In just over a year on the air they've gone from 2 affiliates on the first night to 51... that's incredibly rapid growth! Albeit, most affiliates are in secondary markets (like Grand Rapids, MI and South Bend, IN) but they have a few Major markets too including Los Angeles, Boston, Baltimore, Austin TX and New York! This is the show that WABC doped coast in order to carry and it's already the number one rated show in the New York overnight ratings. So with this, affiliates have something they could go to if they wanted to drop c2c. So the time to bring Art back would be now!

Your post was completely on point,Michael, the hard, cold realities that Art has created a situation where even if he wanted to return to radio full-time, it would be on someone's else terms. Something Art would never accept. The last thing that radio execs are is nostalgic.

Your comparison with Rush is apt, and next to Rush, Art pales in one major regard, even with all of Rush's various troubles over the years...he never quit. The "back problem" excuse for the Fall of 2002 retirement I've always found dubious. That's when Art "lost me" in terms of trusting him. And we know now that the Oct,2002 retirement has lead to what we have today...

I guess I'm gullible, but I always believed his story about falling off of a pole and coming down on his ass and elbow and compressing his spine, but then kinda gave a second thought about the "radioactive roswell debris in an envelope".

You don't believe he had back issues?!? He'd have been making that shit up for YEARS, from what I remember listening to every night!

Also, if anyone truly thinks that the sentence "There may be a change in the works, more on that as it unfolds" was about radiation, do you also think that the whole shit he wrote about babies turning out wrong was literal too? WTF? Is art bell really going to tell us more about radiation as it unfolds? ARE YOU THINKING?

As written, that statement is its own paragraph, therefore a distinct thought.  I don't believe he was referring to being a correspondent for radiation activities.

Fly By Night

I too have a hard time thinking the change is on the way comment was about radiation. Like you said it was a separate paragraph. In addition, what would the nexus be? What change? Did he pulled out a Crystal ball and now somehow knows radiation levels or the winds aloft over Japan are going to change, but he just doesn't want to tell us right now?

That comment was Art being Art knowing that it would fire us all up

amen to that, brother.  i'd just as soon sniff bleach.

Michael V.  Do you prefer straight up clorox, or will one of the off-brands do?  Regular or scented?

I believe he had back issues, and they can be excruciating...but Art's not moving furniture up and down stairs, he's doing radio. I felt the "bad back" reasoning was just an excuse for his bailing for a third time in 4 years.

I'm sure it was "ill health" that forced that 2002 retirement, as in he was "sick" of doing the show.

Interesting point of view... personally I never picked up on that. What with him repeatedly coming back out of retirement and all, and shit, listening to his VOICE, you could hear how much he loved the show and that's a big part of why I listened and why I am posting here. Probably a lot of other people too?

As a listener, did you notice something change in 2002? Lack of enthusiasm?

I think he loved doing the actual show, but didn't care for the responsibilities that came with it. Just my own feeling, but I don't think he necessarily wanted to even return full time in 2001, he just saw Mike Siegel basically killing his show and was forced into action. And that full-time stint didn't last 2 years. Art never showed lack of enthusiasm on his broadcasts, he's too good for that...but the coming and going reflects a conflicted guy,IMO. It continues to this day.

I understand now what you mean...

Change=Revolution=New Art Bell Show, that simple dictum is our future with this new Art Bell message! My sources say take that to the bank! Do not over-complicate things people! Art is coming!

Eddie Coyle

Really folks, must we be so cynical with our silly, absurdist notions like logic and reality ;)  regarding Art's "comeback". All major moves in media and culture happen in that modern metropolis of Portland,Ore, not those backwater enclaves like LA or New York.

Personally, I think the odds of Art coming back full-time are roughly the same as Paul Harvey's...

No one here looks forward to another rendition of C2C with Art at the helm anymore than I do. But are we really having a debate about whether it happens or not?

I guess we could get all in a lather about when it will next rain too.

bleh carry on.

I just thought of something interesting. I don't think Art could actually post on here. Considering the encouraged file sharing, the stream, and our general "fuck you" attitude towards the modern C2C establishment. I don't think Art could post here because it could create some potential legal issues. Just a random conspiracy theory I just thought of.

No doubt you are right, GuerillaUnReal.  When I left my last job, I got a package with a five page paper on all the ways I was NOT allowed to badmouth the company in any way shape or form, in USA and other countries, in sign language or any other language, whether stated or implied, blah, blah, blah.  Even a posting on this site could be taken as a breaching of the settlement agreement and he would have to give back $$$.

The non-compete clause is usually 18 months and sometimes it specifies in the same market, so there could be some wiggle room there.  I am more hopeful now that the Noory Defense Fund is looking for verbal donations than I am at any time since I've been on this board.

For all the love Art Bell and the old CTC show gets around here there's not much actual discussion that goes on about it.  I just had to break out the calculator and figure a few things.  For the 3 CTC board sections here HALF of the posts are in GN sucks and Art Bell Quits Coast.  If you wanted to add in all the odds and ends threads about GN sucking I bet 75% of the boards are wrapped up in 2 topics.  I think CoastGab would die if GN were fired and Art returned.   :D

Well one could say "mission accomplished". The goal had been achieved.

But I do think that this community has a chance to go beyond the gn stinks threads and the what if maybe coulda woulds Art Bell threads.

it's just such a shitty thing that happened to such a great show. it more than overshadows our good feelings about what the show was, it impedes on our ability to enjoy what it was.

I mainly come here to spread and soak up nostalgia for the art bell heyday and to long for the time when you could turn on AMAZING RADIO 5, 6 nights a week. It was a beautiful thing. Like water from a tap.

FROM THE KINGDOM OF KNYE!

b_dubb

back in the old days ... with AB ... how many shows a week did he do?  were there weekend hosts?

I remember him being on 5 days a week and also saturday I believe i used to hear dreamland, but much earlier, like 7pm instead of 10-2.

I also seem to remember a period of time where Art frequently decided to go a FIFTH hour at his own will and would explain that some of us might not be getting the full 5, but for everyone else, HANG ON for another hour.

I also remember never finding SHIT to listen to on Sundays.

I myself can't remember any guest hosts or weekend hosts.

slipstream

The show used to be a full 5 hours.

AH this must be me remembering Art letting some of the affiliate's listeners know what was going on if they weren't getting the full five

Eddie Coyle

Barbara Simpson, Rollye James, Hilly Rose, Noory :'( , Ian Punnett were some weekend hosts...circa 1998-2003
