I think the American public is psychologically "filling in a lot of gaps" about Trump.  By being basically undefined he is the most defined by peoples individually projected needs.

Obama is a much more typical politician. Go back to his stated agenda during his campaigns and you'll see that, for better or worse, he turned out to be pretty much as advertised. What he actually managed to accomplish (in terms of change, particularly), or not, is a different question.

Trump plays politics a whole different way and, I think, people are unprepared for it. Their normal bullshit detection systems don't work so well with Trump.
