I thought the main guest was pretty good. I can't imagine Simple George 'interviewing' him, though.

Punnett didn't mention the Armstrong thing at all.
I listened intently that first half hour...and wasn't surprised the Armstrong thing was avoided, because Ian believes he did no wrong.

Couldn't agree more, the hearing guest was far more interesting than I would have imagined, but there's no chance in Hell that Noory could have conducted that interview. I thought that on at least 5 occasions as the guest and Ian conversed, especially after Horowitz mentioned Pink Floyd's "Welcome to the Machine" and I could envision Noory asking "who's he? a singer?"

Gassy Man

It was a more intelligent show that Coast to Coast has had for quite some time . . . I think that Ian is smarmy, too, but I can't say he's the idiot that George is . . . and while his guests and topics are less paranormal and more "intellectual," the spirit of what Coast to Coast is supposed to be about comes through better in Ian's and George Knapp's shows than from any of the Mickey Mouse "hosts" that drive the show into the hardened ground every other night.

Word is that Miley Cyrus is pregnant. Let's hope we don't lose another American hero seven months from now.

I hope the church that Deacon works at pulled him aside and told him his statement about Armstrong's passing didn't line up with their doctrine.  We'll never know.

ItsOver

Punnett's Armstrong remark was beyond tastless but Nitwit Noory does boneheaded things on a nightly basis.  I'd still listen to Punnett any night over Noory.

When I saw the topic, I refused to even try.
On the other hand, I did try Wells and found that show to be --within the narrow limins of what you can expect from Wells-- pretty good.

From some "information" I heard years ago, Ian Punnett was Art Bell's handpicked successor. But Bell couldn't control the direction of the show. The main host was to relocate to Los Angeles, where Premiere Radio Networks determined it would be run. Bell would never go there. I've heard him say that on Ham Radio. He knew the corporate structure would destroy creativity and spontaneity. I understood Bell refused to "jump on the bandwagon" and sell out. Like the main host today I won't name.

Then there's Ian Punnett. Someone Bell respected. But think of that. Punnett has his own gig weekday mornings. I suggest when you have some spare time, go to the radio station site he works for and tune into his morning program he co-hosts with his wife. There's free podcasts, too. It's kind of neat to hear Ian talk about "normal things" when we're so used to hearing him host "Coast." I remember last year, as he reported on the annual Minneapolis-St. Paul Christmas parade, I expect any second for Ian to break into some "ETs or Bigfoot sighted" as the parade progressed. It didn't happen.

He must have a tough time when he hosts "Coast" now on Sunday nights. He has roughly 10 minutes to change into his local radio radio show right afterwards on Monday mornings. He pulls a double shift. At times, he'll even talk about hosting "Coast" the night before. Sometimes it can be fun. So when you catch Ian being himself, you may think of him differently.

I feel Ian didn't want to give up what he has to host "Coast" full time. That means moving to Los Angeles. That means becoming the corporate puppet and "yes man" like George Noory. I know he had two sons in school at the time, and that would mean relocating them. That means he'd have to give up the radio show he has with his wife. I feel, no matter what the money offered, Ian didn't want to give up his home and life in Minnesota and Premier wouldn't allow a full-time "remote" host. As Ian does with "Coast", on relay out of the studio he has in his home. Sometimes he's in the station studio and his wife co-hosts from home, sometimes it's the opposite.

Just check out Ian doing his own gig sometime. It's fun, all. I can see why he wouldn't give that up to become a "George Noory." He's better than, I feel. A lot better.

Meggini

I just skimmed through the thread. I'm one of those wish-washy types who agrees with both the defenders and detractors. (He showed poor taste with his Armstrong tweet- yeesh)

I like the topics he chooses (personally), but don't always like hearing him arguing with guests (but it was  great hearing him with Quayle ;D ). When he was on more often, I would go in phases - listening to him then taking a break.

TBH, I used to feel the same with Art. Art would argue with guests and I would think "Why am I subjecting myself to this? It's not relaxing or entertaining." But, I would always come back for more, because there was no alternative to Coast. There still isn't... but sometimes I really wish there was.

I enjoyed reading your post and I will give Ian's morning program a listen.  I agree, Ian's personal INTEGRITY forbids him from selling out to Big Corp.

dude... wtf.  I thought he was doing another rat lines show tonight what happened?

WOTR

Am I really the only one loving the interrupting hospice worker.  Every time he breaks in with a completely pointless question or trying to prompt the other guest to steer the conversation somewhere it really need not go I wonder if he is trying to take the hosting position from Noory.  I have been laughing for the last ten minutes wondering who really cares what model HMMV the guy was in.  The story was going along just fine and at several points I hear the guy break in,

I wonder what it must be like to be dying in a hospice and talking to this guy.  You are talking about your deepest fears only to have him ask if you preferred vanilla or chocolate ice cream as a child and pondering if we really need the hundred flavours available in today's world.  It is like Noory talking to the dead (or in this case, simply the dying.)

I kind of wish Ian would have dropped the man who thinks he is the guest host tonight during the break...

stevesh

While I admire him for his work with veterans, I don't like Dannion Brinkley and I wish Ian had just told him to shut up and let the guy tell the story. Brinkley seemed pissed that the segment wasn't all about him. The first half-hour was a complete waste of time, too, as were the 'open lines' in the last hour. Not Ian's best performance, which included two lengthy plugs for his own new book. Shades of Johnny Bravo and his radiation detectors.

"Trying to take the hosting position from Noory" gets an LOL from me. Be they angels? Yes, the veteran was noticeably amused by Dannion's injection of a higher power for almost everything he had to say about the incident. I was impressed by the vet's rationality, but not so much with Danion's attempts to twist his story and memories of the IED incident. The 'survivors guilt' these combat guys feel upon losing fellow friends and soldiers is very common in that type of situation. I wish they had discussed that aspect because it may have helped a few vets in the listening audience.
