I also had a bad experience with the death of my neighbor Gary Vanhousen in 2014.  Gary was a USMC Vietnam Veteran but lied to me and others about his service.  The truth came out when he died of cancer.

He had no Will and no life insurance policy that I was aware of.  I know this because the bank foreclosed on his recently refinanced loan and this complicated sale of the property.  There were no beneficiaries of a life insurance policy.  The result was a total clusterfuck and family feud regarding the rest of his property.

Gary did deploy to Vietnam.  But at some point, he wanted out. So he blew one of his fingers off with his rifle.  He was discharged honorably but was not a combat veteran as he claimed.  No Purple Heart, no Combat Action Ribbon.

I did not know the details until after he died.  I spent a lot of time with Gary in his last 4 months.  I tried to help as much as I could. Driving him to and from Buffalo for Chemo.  Giving him daily shots after. Shopping for him, maintaining his property.  It was a nightmare.

The story was that Gary came back "wounded" and then proceeded to withdraw and lived in the woods for two years.  It's a long story and I still don't know all the facts, but the truth is that his close friends and family knew the truth and said nothing. 

So they lied to me.
