I got the Conet set too. Got it @ Rhino in Santa Monica back in the day. They've got the whole thing up for free at archive.org, which felt like kind of a slap in the face at the time because I paid a ridiculous amount of money for it. But now I'm grateful it's up. My ringtone is the 7 gong station irdial.

https://archive.org/details/ird059

But it's so much more fun to catch numbers stations in the wild on shortwave.

That is very interesting...a few seconds before the start of MITD on SW, the station should play one of the creepy Conet recordings...

Thanks. I'll call Bob Crane in the morning.
That's long distance.  Isn't it?

Would I be able to hear the show on my Uniden Bearcat 355C 800 MHz mobile scanner?

That is a serious question sent to me, btw.

I'm getting a lot of emails about this shortwave announcement.  This has people really excited.

I hope art realizes he needs more than one phone number. Because he needs and additional line for "theme" open lines. We don't need a repeat of last time when he wanted it and it wasn't there.

I am getting a lot of questions from commercial stations that want to carry the show. I am not against the idea BUT we are not going to change anything to help with commercial formats, plus any station that wants to carry it must carry it LIVE only 9pm-12am P.T.

Art

Very Cool! I guess they would have to accept the fewer commercial break model.

Refer them to me if you need to:

No- That scanner is for the 800mhz band. Art's show will be broadcast on 5mhz I think.

I'm thinking Art could play one of his favorite tunes once or twice an hour for us to listen to and stations could play a few commercials if they wanted... otherwise why would they carry it if they can't play commercials. If they played commercials any other time they would cover up part of the show.

I guess they could carry it and consider it part of their FCC "Public Service" commitment.  ;)

Coz

Another thought: With the shortwave and commercial station interest- Art may end up with the largest audience he's ever had!!

Man.. I'm just as excited as when he was starting on Sirius. I'm a fanboy. Shame.

My Uniden starts at 12MhZ so no go....also, I think the antennae and filters on police scanners are not what you need for SW...

All I can think of are those "commercial free" stations out there...we have one here in Tucson that starts at 7am and is off by 6pm...I don't understand the business model (it's not even HD), but it's on the air still the same...

Thanks for this link.  They're listed for sale on eBay too, but I agree it's fun to hear them live on SW.
Even scarier than these mysterious number stations are the apocalyptic preachers on SW, some of whom are really wack.  While listening to SW in Mexico many years ago, I heard one who was convinced Jesus was an alien.

That's an easy one.  Any station that wants it can Billboard it.  As in:  Midnight in the Desert Presented by the C. Crain short wave radio... or whatever.

The interesting thing is, no station/network/advertiser could have a say in the content bc unlike a terrestrial network show, he doesn't need them.

Either way, how much you want to bet that at some point, someone or some network tries to buy the show?

Clyde lewis had some good shows on numbers a year or two age. They should be in the archives.

Halloween show name idea.

Time to dig out the old shortwave radio I bought in the late 90's due to radio advertising...

Midnight in the Desert

What we are doing with Midnight is a pretty big project, it's not like hopping on to a existing Network, Keith and me are building all this from the ground up and we are choosing to include all of you, kind of like Family, in the pains and pleasures of getting it done. We both understand it results in stress even for all of you watching all the wild swings. Not much of this has been easy, we have some big company's doing all the can to place Land Mines in our way as well as complicated legal and technical hurtles to get over...BUT WE WILL.

The countdown clock has begun on http://www.artbell.com and when it hits zero we will be on the air or dead. (Never to rule out the latter).

We will continue to post Updates both positive and negative as they occur, as well as Photos of the build in progress. This is a roll your own operation and I would not have it any other way at this point. One good thing about it is that if anything goes wrong we only have ourselves to yell at.

One thing is that it is very exciting, I am looking forward to the Worldwide aspect of it, I think that is the Ham operator in me. It also took some serious thinking to make it a FREE LIVE streaming show but it just seemed anything else would not feel the same.Of course calls will NOT be screened and you can listen for some new things that I can not talk about at this stage. please feel free to yell at us when you are motivated to do so.

Ok, I am getting so many questions about where to hear the show, no it will not be on any Radio Station BUT it will be on your Smartphone, pad or computer. Simply download TuneIn it's a free APP and type Dark Matter Digital Network in search and bingo you will be there but Midnight in the Desert will not be there until late July. 9PM-12AM Mon-Fri.
