;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Heck, I think so.  If the dead can vote,  they sure should be able to have a chat room, at least in Chicago.

5 Things I Hope to See On Art Bell’s Dark Matter

Posted by: Rob Schwarz in Arts & Culture September 3, 2013   7 Comments

On September 16, 2013, Art Bell will return with a new show called Dark Matter on SiriusXM Radio.

Excited? I am. But I also wonder: Will Dark Matter capture what we all liked about Art Bell’s Coast to Coast AM? Or will it be a different beast entirely? Well, we won’t know until we get there, but for now I thought it’d be cool to share a few things I’d personally like to see when Dark Matter arrives later this month.

1. New opening theme, cool bumper music

We probably won’t be hearing Giorgio Moroder’s Chase on Dark Matter, but that’s okay. It’s easy to forget that, before Coast and Chase, there was Dreamland and Ray Lynch’s The Oh Of Pleasure. Both set the tone for the programs that followed, leading audiences on strange nighttime journeys into weird stories and paranormal discussion.

What will the new opening be? Maybe another Ray Lynch theme. Drifted in a Deeper Land? Celestial Soda Pop? Well, maybe not. Perhaps it’ll be something we’ve never heard before.

As for bumper music, I expect to hear some of the classics. ArtBell.com has been featuring some of the old tunes, like Dancing Queen and Self Control and One Velvet Morning. I’m sure we’ll hear new bumper music, as well…I guess it’ll just depend on whether or not Art Bell wants to capture the old “magic,” or take things in an entirely new direction.

2. Unscreened Open Lines

If there’s one thing that separated the Coast to Coast AM of old to modern Coast, it was the unscreened callers. Some of the show’s best moments were the unexpected, random encounters with strangers in the middle of the night. The Area 51 Caller. JC. The kind of stuff that pre-scheduled interviews just couldn’t provide.

And, honestly, let’s face it: George Noory just isn’t a compelling interviewer, and doesn’t handle open lines very well. Art Bell could keep a person going. He asked good questions, and even if he wasn’t buying what the person was selling, he could at least make it entertaining. That’s the real key.

3. Topic & Guest Variety

This one’s kind of weird for me, because I don’t really have any favorite or least favorite guests on Coast to Coast AM (well, that’s probably because I don’t listen, anymore).

Truth is, hearing the same voices shilling the same books over and over again, telling the same stories we’ve all heard countless times before, gets boring. Stay away from the old stories everyone already knows, unless there’s something new to talk about. Bigfoot? Area 51? Crop Circles? Numerology? That’s cool, but let’s try to mix things up a bit, huh?

I also wouldn’t mind seeing a greater focus on real science. We’ve been doing some crazy things recently, and there’s plenty of actual scientific topics that make ghosts and lake monsters look tame in comparison.

4. Fewer ads

I’m not one of those people who has a huge problem with advertising, but I’ll admit that listening to fifteen minutes of buy gold! and prostate meds and post-apocalyptic foodstuffs can get pretty annoying. With Dark Matter broadcasting on satellite, hopefully (maybe?) this means fewer and perhaps higher-quality ads. Not a huge deal, but we’ll see.

5. Make the paranormal fun again!

This one’s a bit personal, and I’m going to be honest â€" I don’t take the paranormal too seriously. No, it’s true. I’m more entertained by the stories, and I like to have fun with the idea of ghosts and time travel and parallel universes. (And even though I’m just having some fun, I’ve still been called a conspiracy theorist, etc. on Facebook…yeah, that’s a silly place.)

I wouldn’t mind seeing a few shows where “serious” paranormal discussion is tossed to the side and they have a bit of fun, like with Open Time Lines or something. Special open lines on topics like “I’m possessed by a demon” or “I went camping with Bigfoot.” I know some people don’t like that kind of stuff, but…

Oh, and try not to make it all too political or religious. That’s always messy. I feel like modern Coast has slipped in that direction over the years, and while it’s okay to talk about current events and politics to a point, I’ve just never found that too compelling.

Anyway, those are my hopes for Art Bell’s Dark Matter. Just my opinions. What do you hope to see?

*****************

Me, I'd like to see Bugsport cartoons return. Those were always fun.

And hopefully something like Art's old website which is and was a billion times better than the suckage we get from Snoory today.

Leonad Cohen. Anything.  Good call

Does anyone know if Art is going to have the studio cam again and have there been any pictures of his cats ?

I'm surprised with all the people who could do it, no one has created a countdown timer for the new show.

I wouldn't know how to do this technically, but I did sort of " create " this on this link.

http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/generic?iso=20130916T22&p0=127&fg1=a39de0&msg=Art+Bell's+Dark+Matter

Could someone do it for real and post it somewhere ?

There are so many things I wish I could do on the net and can't and I regret it.

By the by, where are Aeryn and Art's wife with all the hoopla about the new show.

Not much mention of them of late.

I hope I didn't misspell the name.

I had just online and saw Art's mesage on cacabook. I thought I missed something spectacular.

It's all a delusion. There is no such person and there never was an Art Bell.

The van from the home will be along soon to pick you up.

Doctors and nurses are waiting to give you your turmeric Sitz bath and electroshock.

My local station is broadcasting a football game instead of Art Bell SIT.
I hope it's just here. Is everyone else receiving SIT?
Where can I go to listen?

This is late, but via Tunein.com you can listen to SIT on Saturday nights.  Just go into the site and put Somewhere In Time into the search engine.  You'll get a few stations to select from to live stream.  I suggest choosing KIXW out of Apple Valley, CA.  Interestingly, they play SIT an hour later than anyone else in the country.  So if you bring it up at 10pm, it still has one more final hour of SIT to air, when nearly all the rest of the station's are starting c2c.  This is Pacific time, mind you.

I agree with all the points this person brought up, but #3 can't be emphasized enough.

And I'd add that even though Art hasn't heard a lot of the material that been on George's show the past 10 years - we have.  Over and over and over.  George would always say the lack of variety and new material from the repeat guests was 'for thuh new lissners', but it was really just a lazy excuse not to do show prep.   And I'm beyond tired of most of it.  I think most people are.

And this means the idea of more shows featuring Dames, Hoagland, Streiber, etc are, umm, unappealing, to say the least.  I really hope Art Bell hears and understands this.

Agent: Orange made a great list of proposed subjects, topics that received little to no notice during the past few years. I suggested the Black Knight satellite and the Dyatlov Pass mystery. A show on Melungeons, as well as related groups, might be a first for Art. There are more than a few untapped sources of new material for Dark Matter. A segment on British and Irish gypsy groups would be interesting. We have Travelers in the USA too, and it would be cool to track the origins of these various groups. How about the Ainu in Japan? These kinds of programs have gotten shrift, and subjects that were fresh before 2000 were aired at their expense.

This time a million. Unless Art's going to have these charlatans on one time to hold their feet to the fire and call them out, I'm not at all interested in hearing these shows. Granted, Dark Matter is not going to please every one all the time, but criminey, "Killshot" Dames and Hoaxland? What in heck is Art thinking here?!!

SciFiAuthor

I'd imagine that Art's thinking is what he thought when he had them all on in the 90's.

I pretty much agree. I am not impressed with any of the shows on the indie channel.  Monday that changes.

I just started my trial yesterday, but I'm not impressed with anything on SiriusXM at all. Very disappointing. I'm really debating what to do after the trial runs out. I love me some Art, so he might be enough for me to get a subscription just for him.

I could just see it now.

Art gets laryngitis, can't do the new show and the fill in host is ... George Noory !
....

I have no doubt that Art with laryngitis would still be more entertaining than George Noory on his best day.

Probably.  Let's see what email he gets on these stale overexposed guests now.  He used to say that he got a ton of mail about Dames positive and negative.

It's ok with me, I just won't listen to those shows.  I'd be happy with 1 day of Art a week, and we have 4!

Just started Sirius, all I can say is Underwhelmed to say the least. People really pay for this Howard Guy? Sounds like the lunch table in 3rd grade. WOW I can say Fuck, over and over again. I bet Art is intelligent enough so he doesn't have to lower himself to Howies level.

Yeah, that seems to be most of SiriusXM's talk. I'm no puritan, but it all seemed really juvenile. I was excited to check out Book Radio and turns out they discontinued it... I was also hoping for some Japanese-related channels, but "World" to them seems to mean spanish (oh, and one Korean). So far the only channel I've left it on for more than 10 minutes is the 20's music channel, which I've found it good background music.

Roy Hinkley

I'm not impressed with the Sirius line-up either.  You're right about the F-bomb.  I listened to Jay Thomas and he sounded like Eddie Murphy's old standup, every other word is f*ck.

I have an internet radio, and I get all kinds of stations like they have on Sirius (and lots more) and it's all for free.  It even has stuff like emergency - police/fire monitoring for various counties and cities, just to give an example of the breadth of internet radio.  There are numerous music genres, old-time radio, comedy, weather, you name it.  Sirius has a few premium shows like Stern, but I'm not a fan so I would not pay for Sirius if it were not for Art's new show.

I can't wait but, I am troubled - I think I just saw on Art's website that on 9-19 Dick Hoaxland is going to be on...

I don't believe there is anyone in the Universe that is a more contrived, phony, unbearably irritating huckster, than Hoaxland. I'm not sure I can even comprehend how Art can even stand talking to the guy.

If you showed Hoaxland a glass of crystal clear, absolutely pure, deionized water, he would say there was evidence in the water of life on Mars and a vast NASA/Government conspiracy to cover it up...

When I hear that moron's voice on the radio it's as if I want to hit the radio with a sledge hammer to change the station.
Yeah, and he'd see faces and other structures in it too.

Really? I'll hold you to that.

Art recently said on his Facebook page that he has little time for politics. But I assume he will still have time for news events. His first show will be on a night when a massive shooting takes place in Washington DC and the nation's capitol has been transitioned into a war zone, fighter jets, chopper rescues, SWAT team style cops patrolling near the Capitol.. I assume he will have to touch on this subject for his first program. I will be interested in how he handles the time. Hell, tonight may be the night he goes the entire night live

all I can say is, Art has 30 days to impress me. If he does, I will strongly consider plunking down hard-earned cash to listen to his radio program.

However, I don`t think Hoaxland, No-shame Dames, et al, are going to do it. I really hope he has more up his sleeve than the same, tired same `ol, same `ol.

We shall see.

I totally agree.. I really hope that Art covers issues of the day as well.. With recent NSA developments among other things, it would be crazy not to, the conspiracy websites and communities have had more relevant news than the current mainstream media! If Art comes back and tries to avoid the things going on in the world nowadays, his show will seem like just fluff with no edginess .. Its these things that keep me listening to the old broadcasts even today, and sure I turn on Clyde and Alex at times to get their take on recent events but they can not do it like Art used to .

So that being said, please Art don't skip the political talk or news .. the world has been drastically changing and you need to be a voice in it... again!

There is a yoga chanting radio channel on Sirius too. I was sort of expecting Koyanistaqqi but got some pretentious easy listening stuff.

art is the only reason i signed up, too.  otherwise, i think sirius is a pile of shit (with the exception of opie and anthony).

i say again... i got three years of sirius streaming for $63.  all you need to do is add the streaming feature to someone else's existing sirius account.  i used my dad's.  that comes to only $1.75 per month.  virtually free.
