Tuning into one of Art Bell's shows is like walking by the Sistine Chapel in about 1510, and stopping to go inside to watch the guy painting the ceiling.

I like this post, PB, and very much agree.  I don't need to believe, or even enjoy, most of Art's guests to appreciate the radio mastery of Art Bell.  He's one in a million.   I can snark on Chumlee and Weeber for hours, and it doesn't take one thing away from the fact that every single day that Art is on the air is a day to be treasured.  We never know how many more days we will have him, and the last 10 years have been much the poorer for the lack.  If I happen to enjoy a guest or topic, as with Michio, LMH or (god help me) Jonathan Reed, it's just icing on the ceiling.

Thanks for those sentiments, with which I totally agree.  My heart has been dropping lately to hear a lot of scathing criticism of Dark Matter (in another online group) because the guests haven't been what some were expecting them to be.

Guests, Smests, Art is back, and Art is still the Michelangelo of Pahrump!  Happy days are here again.  :)

So far this has been the best week since arts return. Karam
And open lines left.

Sums it up perfectly for me!   :)
What IS it about Art?  Oh, yeah, he's a professional...
I'm enjoying him sooooo much.   8)

I wonder what forum your talking about scully as I can't find any that have a lot of traffic re Art Bell.  I mean there's negative things said here as well.  Can you point me in the direction of the forum your talking about?

I haven't listened to last night's show yet, but it sounds as if you were correct about Chunga Bunga.  I think we found Barbara's "personal problem."  Sounds like GIS was hijacked by a scam artist who isn't much of an artist.

As it turns out Barbara is simply "getting older" and cannot be a part of everything. This makes sense, and as I sit here listening (coincidentally) to Dust in the Wind, it makes me sad. Time is precious and, even while we are still here, things we are able to do (or do well) fall away. "Don't hang on. Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky. It slips away, and all your money won;t another minute buy."

My guess is the original Fantastic Forum--it's almost dead there but they have a mod over there who was trashing Art for not being political, relevant and fresh.  It was so over the top and the guy was full of himself.

What he didn't get was Art himself was what makes the show work not if you agree or like the guests.  Art doesn't need to cater to anyone's ideology or politics to be great at radio.  Damn he can interview Jo Blow and make it sing.

It was so bad that FF deserves to be dead.  That mod can stuff it--to be polite!  I see no need to ever go back to that graveyard unless I wanted to do some EVP!

Thanks desertfox. It is dead over there. And I agree, Art makes the show not the guests.

What gets me is that the four or five people who still post there (mods?), apparently haven't even bothered to listen to the shows most of the time. I agree, that forum deserves to be dead. They're no fans of Art.

BellGab is the only forum that has kept the fire alive all these years.

Holy crap!  Ye Olde Fantastick Forume is still operational?
I think there are more people still using typewriters to chat about Art.

ziznak

To me his worst guests so far are really the Greer types who don't shut up and let Art talk.  After my relisten to last nights show sometime in the early early morning I went to sleep thinking to myself that indeed Art sounded very much alive and full of piss and vinegar.  He gave Hogue a really good smacking around, really made the guy work.  I have to give it to Hogue as well he took the hits and answered back as best he could.

It seems like some of the guests that might be considered easy targets for Art don't end up getting hit... They're too easy right?   It's the one's that he knows are either intelligent or very good at debating or public speaking that Art seems to come out at... He's like a boxer... while sparring with Meador he sprinkled him with little jabs and coddled him... didn't knock him right on his ass like he could have...

I noticed some very faint beeping and computer-like chattering noises in the background at the start of one of Art's shows.  Maybe it was his old fax machine.  ;D

Or his PO Box address. What do I do if I want to send him a crochet toilet paper roll cover in the shape of a cat?

I bet if you sent a package to the Pahrump post office with "Art Bell", the post office would let him know he had a package there.

And, of course, Noory couldn't even figure out how to send Art an email.

Geesh.  Art probably gets a truck load of this type of thing every week.  I can just see some future archaeologist trying to figure out some massive matted-up crochet ball found in a big hole in the Nevada desert.

I called it a forum, but it's really a FB closed chat room for (supposedly) Art Bell fans.  They list over 150 members, and I was enjoying it until Art actually got back on the air and failed miserably in the opinion of some very vocal members there.  I think a lot of folks like me have already left the building.

I didn't wait 10 years for Art to come back on to give up on him in 2 weeks. And I'm not talking about legitimate complaints about some of the guests.  I have those, too. I do not, however, think Art has become boring and out of sync.  Nor am I already planning to cancel my Sirius connection.  :-\

Different strokes for different folks, and all that jazz.  ;)

I think you need to give Art a chance and cut him some slack.
Sirius was obviously NOT ready for prime time nor for the vast audio radiance that Art enjoyed.
I also think that the dynamic he used to have with having special lines for Satan, time travellers and the like is missing with having only one phone number to call.
What moron made that decision and why didn't they try to use Art's old setup in his home or create one in his new studio ?
I think Art may be a bit rusty too. He's had problems with guests who've gotten used to Snorry's minimalist style of questioning and can't deal with hardball questions.
Also, the call screener thing isn't working either. It cuts down on the spontaneousness of the calls.
Art does need to ban one other thing. NO religious types wanting to cite scripture. That kind of stuff used to drive me nuts.
I think another thing that is hurting and I hope Art can fix it somehow is that many of his classic guests have died off and the caliber of the new guests isn't up to those Art used to have.
Even then I won't stop listening. I'm still hooked and don't find Art boring at all.
He might also not let guests keep plugging their books over and over like Hogue kept doing. Save that stuff for the end of the interview.
I wonder if one night on open line he'll get a call from East of the Planet.
Wouldn't that be wild !

cat laws

Law of Cat Inertia: A cat at rest will tend to remain at rest, unless acted upon by some outside force, such as the opening of cat food, or a nearby scurrying mouse.

Law of Cat Motion: A cat will move in a straight line, unless there is a really good reason to change direction.

Law of Cat Magnetism: All blue blazers and black sweaters attract cat hair in direct proportion to the darkness of the fabric.

Law of Cat Thermodynamics: Heat flows from a warmer to a cooler body, except in the case of a cat, in which case all heat flows to the cat.

Law of Cat Stretching: A cat will stretch to a distance proportional to the length of the nap just taken.

Law of Cat Sleeping: All cats must sleep with people whenever possible, in a position as uncomfortable for the people involved as is possible for the cat.

Law of Cat Elongation: A cat can make his body long enough to reach just about any counter top that has anything remotely interesting on it.

Law of Cat Acceleration: A cat will accelerate at a constant rate, until he gets good and ready to stop.

Law of Dinner Table Attendance: Cats must attend all meals when anything good is served.

Law of Rug Configuration: No rug may remain in its naturally flat state for very long.

Law of Obedience Resistance: A cat’s resistance varies in proportion to a human’s desire for him to do something.

First Law of Energy Conservation: Cats know that energy can neither be created nor destroyed and will, therefore, use as little energy as possible.

Second Law of Energy Conservation: Cats also know that energy can only be stored by a lot of napping.

Law of Refrigerator Observation: If a cat watches a refrigerator long enough, someone will come along and take out something good to eat.

Law of Electric Blanket Attraction: Turn on an electric blanket and a cat will jump into bed at the speed of light.

Law of Random Comfort Seeking: A cat will always seek, and usually take over, the most comfortable spot in any given room.

Law of Bag/Box Occupancy: All bags and boxes in a given room must contain a cat within the earliest possible nanosecond.

Law of Cat Embarrassment: A cat’s irritation rises in direct proportion to his embarrassment times the amount of human laughter.

Law of Milk Consumption: A cat will drink his weight in milk, squared, just to show you he can.

Law of Furniture Replacement: A cat’s desire to scratch furniture is directly proportional to the cost of the furniture.

Law of Cat Landing: A cat will always land in the softest place possible.

Law of Fluid Displacement: A cat immersed in milk will displace his own volume, minus the amount of milk consumed.

Law of Cat Disinterest: A cat’s interest level will vary in inverse proportion to the amount of effort a human expends in trying to interest him.

Law of Pill Rejection: Any pill given to a cat has the potential energy to reach escape velocity.

Law of Cat Composition: A cat is composed of Matter + Antimatter + It Doesn’t Matter.

Dont say that !! I wanna BELIEVE !!!

He's had a long standing "no reading of religious scripture" on-air rule since the 90's.

Surmo

And even us semi-believer types don't want scripture on the air. We can all agree on that one.  No more than atheist astronomers from Hartford, who love Obama and Snoory.

Surmo

Tonight I try to get on air to tell the strange "UFO" story I tried to tell when I got on for the second show.  Made one call, and got right on air, let's see if a miracle occurs and I get on with a second call.  The odds are, not to bring up Bill from Hartford, astronomical.......

Juan

I don't understand why Art doesn't get the GIS people, or someone, to contact the former guests who are on the other side.  Surely we could hear Robert Ghostwolf again through some kind of psychic connection.

Surmo

Father Malachi would have to be first on that list.

Surmo

Of course, under those circumstances Art could go for new "late" guests, such as Tesla, Houdini, Long John Nebel, Edgar Allen Poe and Lovecraft.  Now there is a good first week!
