Radio and Podcasts / Into The Planet - New DMRN Show
December 07, 2013, 02:57:41 PM
Our new show - Into The Planet - begins at 11pm Eastern Saturday nights beginning Dec. 14th, 2013. Hosted by myself and extreme explorer, Jill Heinerth, we hope to bring an interesting and entertaining hour of content to DMRN. We will focus on Exploration, Science, Culture, and Current Events. One of the features on each program is taking listeners on "Audio Expeditions."  Here's a link to a video about diving inside the largest moving object on the planet: "ICE ISLAND" our first "AudioEx."

http://youtu.be/SIdoJwLl2tA

Our co-host, Jill Heinerth led a National Geographic underwater team expedition to Antarctica and for the first time in history, they climbed, landed a helo on, and cave dived inside this massive berg.

Anyway, this expedition, some "Science Faction" and other good stuff coming your way Saturday nights at 11 Eastern starting December 14th.

Please check out Jill's website at http://www.IntoThePlanet.com

Cheers, Robert

Nobody has discussed this, at least not with me. I think at this point we're just having fun and seeing what works... at least that's how I see it.
Cool. But, if successful, at some point money will have to be discussed. I don't mean a paycheck, I'm talking about each program selling advertising during the broadcast and/or on the various host's websites. There is a good possibility that being on Art Bell's Internet radio network will drive huge numbers of eyeballs to each program's website. This is a good thing, so hosts should be considering affiliate links and paid ads on their sites. Look at Rense's network, or AJ, or Free Talk Live - good examples of monetizing independent Internet radio.
Remember, Art was told by SiriusXM to just get on the air and "have fun." And, we all know how that worked out...

The idea is simple, Keith is doing the heavy lifting. Simply provide a place where people who
want to do a Paranormal show can do it for free and it can be heard for free. A way to keep the
Web Site alive and provide a service for both Hosts who want to give it a try and a place where
the listener can encounter new ideas

If and when the time comes that I can go back on air, I will do so there. I hope it grows like crazy,
like most things it is just a idea, we shall see where it goes. Much as I love it, I am not the only game
in town and even if I can not stream there now, it can be a starting place for the next great Broadcaster.
Feel free to give it a shot. We live in a time where just a few companys control everything.

                                                                                                                       Art
This is a good idea. Sort of an "open sourced" Internet broadcast network. But, how do the producers of the new programs monetize their efforts? I would imagine that, in order to get the network's quality to a professional level, there would have to be some kind of cooperative revenue sharing. Will Art's people sell advertising across the network? Will Art just imitate the "Ariana Huffington" model and expect all of the content producers to go onto his website/network for free? For the "exposure?" Just wondering if anyone has really thought this through as a business model?
Your thoughts?

This is really a remarkable chapter in the evolution of media. When Apple created the iPod and iTunes, it revolutionized the music business. Today, we have Amazon and Netflix creating and distributing their own Internet-only TV programming - and the programs are winning Emmy awards! Now, Sirius, and other entities in the "new" radio broadcasting arena are mature enough and capitalized highly, and they are changing the way people listen to talk radio. This episode between AB and Sirius will be studied for years. It may well be the turning point that changes the relationship between the big names in talk radio, and the platforms that distribute their content in the future.

Indeed.

...It would be great if you can paste a scan  (or private message) of your contract (just the no compete part) so us lawyers can take a look at it!
Yes, Art, if you ever need cut-rate legal advice in a dispute against a huge media corporation, I highly recommend getting it from "us lawyers" on the Internet.

Falkie:
Your points are well taken. Perhaps I am generalizing, but I had issues with the app too. I signed on to Sirius Internet streaming only to hear Art, so I didn't have any prior experience. Anyway, I deleted the app from my iPad and iPhone, then downloaded it again and it has been fine since. I have rural Florida DSL with a crap router - so the entire Internet ISP goes down at least once every few days. I'm not making excuses for Sirius, just saying that my experience has been pretty good overall. Also, I called and cancelled my subscription. It runs through the 12th...so if Art announces a comeback in the next 2 days, I'll happily re-subscribe.

... a lot of people had no issues at all with the player. Mine worked fine, if it timed out I just touched the iPad, no big deal.
EXACTLY! I am of the opinion that many of the "drops" were really people who were not Internet savvy enough to figure out the Sirius interface, and got frustrated. Pilot error, if you will...

The heck with broadcasting - just start Q &A posting on your own subscription Internet forum! "East of the Rockies - light up those keyboards!"

JUST CANCELLED SIRIUS.  No problem doing so. The number is 888-601-6302. They will continue the subscription through the billing period - in my case until the 12th.

Best of luck to Art Bell: Fool me once, shame on you - fool me twice, shame on me!

Plan to save show:
A. Stream the show from his website and charge fee for premium service with archives.

B.  Use clout of massive fan base to "gently" persuade Sirius not to bring breach of contract lawsuit (if his contract  is an issue).

C.  If Sirius cannot be dissuaded then use Kickstarter to raise money to "pay off Sirius" to let him out of contract.

D.  If Sirius prevails on the non compete clause (and cannot be bought) pull strings with powerful friends like Bigelow to nudge Sirius sat's out of orbit with super secret "UFO" tech or broadcast show from yacht in International waters and thus outside the reach of United States contract law.
Why should those of us who invested our hard-earned dollars towards a Sirius subscription help to bail out a multi-millionaire's career with a KickStarter campaign?

I will attempt to analyze. Art Bell is a creature of the analog days. He built C2C into a huge success with over 500 traditional radio stations. But, he doesn't understand the new, digital natives, the people who listen on smart phones, tablets, etc...In the 21st century, you must earn your audience through engagement - a two way relationship, give and take. Art doesn't get the fact that in 2013 people have short attention spans and will simply move on and not follow him all over the place for their talk radio fix. There are many newer, younger and more engaged alternative talk show hosts out there who appreciate their audience, and are hungry enough to put the audience first. Some of them work day jobs and broadcast on their own dime, hoping to some day have a shot at a Sirius show...It was a good ride, but after almost 2 decades of listening I sadly say: Good bye Art.

I just shot Art another email "SHOULD WE ORGANIZE A CAMPAIGN TO GET XM TO DO IT?"

Art's reply:

"I am sure that would be great!

                           Art"
Please relay this sentiment to Art: We are not your personal fucking army. Put on your big boy pants and get back on the air and live up to the commitment you made to us - not to Sirius. We committed to you with our hard earned dollars. If you are not back live tomorrow - you lose me and thousands of others for-fucking-ever.

It took me a few nights to figure out the Sirius interface. Since then , I've not had the show "drop." There is a built-in software feature on Sirius that prompts listeners on certain devices to "keep listening." This is being interpreted as "dropping or losing" the feed by some of the less Internet-savvy Art Bell listeners. That's all this is. Also, some first-time Internet stream listeners have old computers that have poor wi-fi signals. Your 1998 Dell PC with all that Windows malware won't work like a radio.
I am really disappointed with Art's decision. BUT - he did seem kinda squirrelly about the government shutdown and threatened to leave for the PI again. I figured we'd lose him then...There is no better broadcaster, but maybe Art Bell has finally jumped the shark. Sucks...I want my $180 a year back.

Wasn't there a woman named Barbara Simpson? on C2C a few times as host? A woman's perspective would be nice. I'll volunteer my wife, too. Here's her website www.IntoThePlanet.com

Just tuned in...What did I miss?
First Jorch had some fear-monger called "Alex" on, and they talked with really gravelly voices about Eugenics and the shadow government Illuminati. Then, some guy named "Steve" from Montana came on and he sounded like he was pretty tweaked. Then a old dude named "Gerald" with a heavy New York accent came on and was really pissed about something that happened to him on Wall Street...Oh wait!...Sorry, wrong program!

I agree.  I'm thrilled Art came back, but in all honesty I am mostly disappointed with the guests so far.
This is such a great opportunity for Art to shine again, but I'm having a few concerns that not much effort is being made to secure dynamic and interesting guests

If Art holds our opinion in any kind of weight about guests he will run out of them fast. We are just a tiny sample. Indeed, last nights guests kinda sucked but thats the way it goes.
I have to think that a guest spot with Art Bell is a coveted spot by many people - authors, filmmakers, etc. A good bet that being on with Art made RCH and LMH's careers.

Agree. My theory is that with so much information at everyone's Internet fingertips, it is easy to call bullshit on these so-called "Prophets" Here's my prophesy for tonight's Dark Matter: about half the audience will soon turn this Nostradamus faker off and go to sleep. I REALLY wish Art would find NEW guests and bring this show into the 21st century...

Yeah I thought that too, when he said he had a 401k but no invested stocks I started to worry, I mean I've owned Sirius, Microsoft, and a handful of others over my short time of 12-14 years of investing...so I gotta worry when an economist that writes for a news organization, is out of touch on that level...
He's an ECONOMIST, not an investment counselor. basically a college professor who wrote a book. Those that can't do...teach.

Anybody wanna recap what that guest had to say about the economic mess in a couple of sentences or a paragraph at most? I wasn't really paying attention to him .. sounded kinda like Father Guido Sarducci so I was listening mostly to the Rays and Sox game.  8)
He basically said the U.S. economy is being held hostage by a bunch of egomaniacal political oligarchs in D.C. and we are very close to being f@cked.

I think Art picks the bumpers not a producer, lets see if there is a money themed bumper out of this segment or into the next.
I'm thinking Pink Floyd's "Money." I think that's in his cue.
