Let's take a walk down memory lane with this 4Mghz, 64K monster, which was featured in various issues of the magazine - the keyboard usually manned in the ad by a clean cut Morman:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Eagle-II-CP-M-Computer-Z-80-Works_W0QQitemZ200241563754QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

This is really hitting where the heart is.  MV is a lover of tech but how will he ~process~ the asking price of the above item?

(Packing up all the 8-track tapes, now that I know where to send them.  Hotel California, Rubber Soul, KISS Dynasty, Zep IV, and OH, VAN HALEN.)
tech relics seem only to resell for their intrinsic value, whereas things like vases and paintings transcend intrinsic value when subjected to the honesty and bluntness of a capitalistic free market.  in other words, an old computer, in my eyes, will only EVER be worth what it is capable of doing relative to what computers can do today.  the only exceptions would be obvious milestones or pillars of computing history.  unfortunately, ENIAC isn't for sale.  not that i could afford it.  yes, i know i own GNS, but it has yet to make me a millionaire.  i know you are stunned.  conclusion:  i wouldn't trade a used airline vomit bag for that computer.

cam, i would gladly accept your 8track tapes.  however, i must humbly ask that you retain the eagles, kiss, and van halen.  bring on the beatles and zep, please.

seacrest out.

I don't think it's anything special either really. Just the first thing that came to mind. My largest issue with the show is actually his theme music. As a musician myself, I know where he takes his samples from and how the whole thing was comprised, and it's just godawful.

Anyways, I understand man, no problem.

heh... the first thing that struck me about the show when i heard it the first time was the intro.  it goes ON AND ON AND ON for literally about 4 or 5 minutes as if you're about to enter a realm previously untrod by mere mortals.  after minutes of this grandiose posturing and self indulgence, some guy comes in and says, "hey, how ya doin'?"

BLEH.

actually, that 8-track player isn't too hard for me to understand.  i have a 68 firebird and for the purpose of nostalgia, i ordered a factory sealed 8-track player off of ebay a few years ago.  yup.  sho did.

My husband got up for a "midnight snack"  at around 6am and found me sound asleep at the table with a mouthful of ham & Swiss cheese sandwich !  And if it is starting to sound like we do a lot of eating around here?   We do.   8)

haha!   did he have the foresight to snap a picture for us?  that's a funny image.

National sovereignty with open diplomacy and friendly assistance and trade is fine...but we need our armies, our weapons, and our borders. Centralizing control of resources or currency is not something I personally EVER look forward to.
agreed.  1000%.

a lot of people complained about her, but i always liked her.

i also liked rollye james guest hosting c2c.

there is bad blood between james and c2c, apparently.  hence, her absence.

Well congratulations to both of you !!!!!   Your wife is absolutely GORGEOUS !!  (like I need to tell you.)  I love the look on your face in that photograph, too.  Kind of a wily smirk,  like,  "Yeah.  Mm Hm.  I'm da man.  Mm Hm.  I won the lottery and you di- int !  It's peanut butter jelly time!!!"

That dress of hers is gorgeous, too.   Man - just that one picutre captures my imagination on so many levels,  and everything in it is so aesthetically pleasing.  I like her noggin topper, too.  (sigh)  NOW I have yet ANOTHER  interesting culture to explore with my little Google friend.  Good on ya, Mate !

HAHAHA thank you very much.

Macaroni And Cheese

Ingredients:
1 Box, Macaroni and Cheese
1/8 Stick, Butter
Some, Milk

Boil the macaroni.  Most of your stoves go to 10, but mine goes to 11.  11 is hotter than 10.  However, I recommend you place your stove on 6.

After a few minutes (a few being, some), take a single piece of the macaroni out of the pan.  Eat it.  Is it soft enough?  Could you imagine an entire mouth full of this?  Then it's cooked.

Drain the water.  If you're without a strainer, just put the lid on the top of the pan and tilt it over the sink.  The water will come out just fine.

Pour in the little powder cheese pouch.  Then pour on the milk.  Then drop in the butter.  Stir.

Stir, stir, stir.

Put some salt in there.  For Christ's sake, you want people to taste this shit, don't you?

After you're done stirring and done salting, you may choose either to 1) eat directly from the pan or 2) get fancy and use a dish.  I prefer a bowl since it's less prone to macaroni loss.  If people are watching you eat, you might consider a plate.

Put a piece of parsley on the side.

I hope you guys enjoy this.  Let's not spread this one around, tho.

Technology / Re: Your Favorite Freeware Applications?
August 11, 2008, 11:22:31 PM
ok, as promised, here are some of my favorite freeware apps:

ReactOS
ReactOS is a free, open source Windows operating system clone.  Built from scratch and based on Windows XP/2003, ReactOS will hopefully one day enable you to run Windows without paying for Windows!  And since it's open source code, that means potentially millions of contributors/developers/testers compared to Microsoft's thousands.  If you have an OUNCE of programming prowess, I would strongly encourage you to participate in the development of ReactOS.  I'm very excited to see where this project will go in the next 5 years or so.  Watch out, Microsoft.  Your years of OS dominance are potentially approaching their twilight.

Audiograbber
Over a decade old, this utility, IMO, is still the best thing out there for ripping audio from CD to MP3.
http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/download.html

CCleaner
Freeware app for cleaning your computer's cache, and generally erasing your tracks.  Also fixes registry problems and does some other handy things too.
http://www.ccleaner.com/download

Defraggler
A disk defragmenter that operates by defragmenting on a file-by-file basis rather than attempting to sloppily shuffle the whole damn drive all over the place.  Far faster than the defragmenter you get with windows... far more efficient.
http://www.defraggler.com/download

^^^^^ Not Necessary with vista/win7 ^^^^^

DVD Decrypter
EASILY rip DVDs from disc to hard drive while simultaneously removing copy protection.
http://www.ufoship.com/dvddecrypter.exe

DVD Shrink
Convert ripped dvds to .iso files, or re-author and compress them to fit on a 4.7GB DVD.  This is what you would use after you use DVD Decrypter.
http://www.ufoship.com/dvdshrink.exe

Faststone Image Viewer and Photo Resizer (Separate Apps)
The image viewer allows you to edit photos, crop them, etc.  The resizer is my personal favorite.  I use it all the time.  It features multiple output formats.  Very niiiiiice.
http://www.faststone.org/index.htm

Filezilla
Need a good FTP client?  Forget all others.  Try Filezilla.
http://filezilla-project.org/download.php

Flightgear
Flightgear is an open source flight simulator.  10 years in development, it's quite advanced and has some surprising features for a freeware flight sim.  Advice: you will probably have to take your time getting started with it, since it's very realistic.  In other words, most people don't manage to just install it and fly within 3 minutes.  After all, most people wouldn't be able to do that in a real airplane, either.
http://www.flightgear.org/Downloads/

Foxit Reader
I HATE HATE HATE Adobe PDF reader.  It's bloated, slow, and constantly nags you to update.  Use Foxit.  You won't regret it.
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

KeePass Password Safe
I am horrid when it comes to managing passwords.  KeePass generates complex passwords for you, and saves them all under one password.  You can even take the database file with you on a thumb drive, etc., and use your password database on other computers.
http://keepass.info/download.html

K-Lite Codec Pack
If you are tired of trying to play video files only to find your player can't play them because a codec is missing, try installing this.  You should be able to view almost any type of video once you do.
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm

MagicDisc
MagicDisc allows you to mount disc image files (.iso .cue .nrg) in an imaginary disc drive.  In other words, you can use the disc image files without having to burn the images first to a physical disc.
http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-magicdisc-overview.htm

MP3Gain
Level out the volume of all of your MP3 files with one click.  Best of all, this app doesn't re-dither the audio, so there is ZERO quality loss.
XP Users:  http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mp3gain/mp3gain-win-1_2_5.exe?download
Vista Users:  http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mp3gain/mp3gain-win-full-1_2_5.exe?download

Quicktime Alternative and Real Player Alternative
The Quicktime Player makes me puke.  So does the Real Audio player.  Itunes requires Quicktime to run.  It will work with Quicktime Alternative.  Sooooooo... uninstall them and replace with the following:
Quicktime:  http://www.free-codecs.com/download/quicktime_alternative.htm
Real Audio:  http://www.free-codecs.com/download/real_Alternative.htm

AVG AntiVirus
If you need a free antivirus app, use this.  It's just as good as the others (McAfee and Norton) who require a subscription for updates.
http://free.avg.com/

^^^^^ Just get Security Essentials from Microsoft. ^^^^^

Portable Apps
This site is loaded with software you can install TO and run directly FROM a USB flash drive.  Yup.  Take your programs from computer to computer.
http://portableapps.com/

I'll post more to come.  Hope some of you find these freeware applications useful.

you mean to tell me that they have actually REMOVED the audio of a caller calling george an idiot?  never before in the history of broadcasting has a single individual been soooooo protected from reality.  because of the people he is surrounded by who protect him, in his own mind he must be an international SUPERSTAR!!

Can't seem to get that f'n gray line off the bottom.  Oh well.

beautiful.

and i see what you're talking about with the line at the bottom.  looks like it's a snip of previous frames poking below the white.  not enough to worry about tho.  i'll post this and if u figure out the line, let me kno and i'll repost that.
#21681
this isn't really worthy of a thread, but i wasn't sure how else to communicate this.

if you clear your cache, you'll notice the font size of text within quotes has increased.

this is a change i meant to implement a long time ago, as i have received several complaints about it.  hope this helps alleviate some of your 2AM eye strain.

also, around the final week of august, this site will undergo a major overhaul in both functionality and design.  the only thing you will recognize after i'm finished will be your posts.  expect GNS to be down for several hours when this happens.

cheers,
michael vandeven

p.s.  i have received a few questions recently about the limitations of speech on this site.  i'd like to reiterate that there are no limitations here based on decency.  only the following types of content are forbidden: illegal, copyrighted, and slanderous/libelous.  if your words and/or content don't fall into either of these categories, you have free reign.  this site is for people 18+.

I always got a HUGE larf out of it when he ( SFB a/k/a Noory)  used to contend that anyone who posted hateful comments about him where just small, hateful people who had no life and nothing going for them and they were just miserable,  bitter, hate filled people that didn't love anyone and nobody loved them.  I'm laughing right now thinking about it.
so you mean my like or dislike of noory is the standard by which my value as a human being is measured?

they didn't mention this when i went to church as a child.

if anybody has that show, you can get it to her rather easily, as mentioned, by using YouSendIt.com

i don't listen to snoors enough to know that he takes 10 pounds of vitamins each day, but i know this:  he certainly isn't using Focus Factor.  i'm not certain it would affect him anyway.

oh christ does their site suck.  i know times are tough in the terrestrial broadcasting business, but how much would it REALLY cost to redesign the site relative to clear channel's cash on hand?  pennies.

#21687
heh heh... hi dixie.  i had started a few months to wonder whatever happened to you.  you used to send me big long emails outlining your inability to stomach snoors.  i had seen people mention your name here and there, and then yesterday i googled your name and found your blog, which people can see here:  http://ghostofcoast.blogspot.com/

apparently you are among the best known of all the anti-staches out there.  glad you are here.  it's like old times.  tee hee.

hey, i remember you mentioning something about interviewing noory.  am i remembering that correctly?  if so, what happened with that?
