Now he's in a tough situation. Does he regret it? He says he doesn't and, in fairness to him, I'll take him at his word. But there is a lot to regret in this situation. We've spent days brainstorming all the myriad better possibilties for what went down, but it's Sirius's call, now. I'm sure by the end of next week it'll all be sorted out, finalized, and we'll get the closure we're all groping for. Then we'll go our separate ways, older and wiser. It will be a two year art famine, perhaps, but why think about that when all the golden lands ahead of you and all kinds of unforseen events wait lurking to surprise you and make you glad you're alive to see?

That last sentence was stolen from Kerouac, by the way.

Well said.  I will be eager to get some closure:  I don't want to be left hanging on like in that old song.

People are missing the point regarding prayer. It comforts folks in their time of need or crisis. Anything beyond that, is gravy. It sure got me through some tough times.

One last point I will make on this subject, is that I feel that the people who believe the strongest in the power of their prayer (or in their religion) receive the most comfort from it.  Therefore, these persons' immune systems are bolstered (relieved from more stress) more than a person's immune system who only halfway believes in the power of prayer, and does it half-heartedly, not knowing whether it will work or not.  This is where I see an actual correlation between prayer, how much the person believes in it, and whether that praying helps that person out in both relieving their stress and in that lessened stress strengthening their immune system.

I got ads...
Relevant to searches I've done recently. (Don't even go there...)

Wow, my new ad-blocker is working gangbusters.  I didn't expect it to, and had almost forgotten I'd installed it.  Glad there ARE still ads being seen by all the rest of you.

I'm totally seeing ads, people. Not sure what everyone's on about. Also, I believe Keith mentioned on FB that Sirius has no say over the site.

Really?  I'm seeing no ads.  Hey, maybe it's just my new ad-blocker working.  Wow, I will have to give it kudos:  something free that actually works.

I am not sure what you are saying here. Because I enjoy paranormal subjects, I can't separate science from mysticism? Let me explain some of my parameters. I hate shows that deal with any kind of alternative medicine as the primary treatment. I hate shows that suggest if one believes just a bit more they will be healed. I hate shows that eschew medicine for quackery.

I am fully engaged in UFO shows, technology, cryptozoology, ancient astronauts. Even though I am fairly certain it is all hokum but those do no specific harm.

I am not telling you what to believe. But if someone comes along and starts talking about intentionality. I am going to jump all over it.

If that offends you... it isn't my goal.

Frankly, I think prayer makes the person praying feel better, coz that person has hopes it might work and this in turn makes them feel more hopeful about a potentially hopeless situation, and then they feel a bit better about it.  I also think there is a correlation between this and people believing in religion, and believing that the soul survives the death of the body.  Believing that gives them comfort and they can go on and not get depressed by the realization that "this is it" and there is nothing in the hereafter (whether there is or not, I haven't figured out yet myself).  But both those things:  prayer, and religions that stress that there is a heaven of some sorts, are comfort mechanisms by human beings (this I firmly believe).  It could be that, as it provides some degree of comfort to them, their stress loads are thereby decreased, and by decreasing their stress load, one bolsters your immune system and one can recover more swiftly from a current health malady, as well as keeping new ones at bay (as your immune system is stronger for not having to drag that same degree of stress around).  See what I'm saying?  Just my own theory on a very complicated subject.

That sucks, Paul. I hope if things work out that SOMEONE is paying you.

As for the ads on the website--

I think they were google ads, so if they are gone I think Keith may have removed them. I don't know why advertisers would pull out from the website yet, since things aren't resolved and the site is still getting traffic/being updated.

I see NO ads anymore on Artbell.com, and previously there were several-plus, and from a variety of companies (they were not all just Google ads, IIRC).  I think the advertisers must be assuming Art is done on Sirius, and pulling their advertising.  If so, that sucks, and let's hope they're jumping the gun.  (Yes, I still have some hope, but it's waning).

So no one is going to explain to me why all the advertising has been pulled down from Art Bell's website?

Okay, then:  *fine.*  I shall surmise:  the advertisers pulled their ads because Art is no longer on Sirus.

That must be bumming out Keith.

This is from Casio. He posted this in http://darkmatterxm.com/threads/speak-up-art-bell-quits-dark-matter.215/page-36#post-4987

Oh, I get it now:  Casio is the guy that runs that Darkmatterxm board.  I'm not a member of it, but I did "like" his page on FB just coz I will like ANY page on FB if it has anything to do with Art Bell.

Casio seems relatively okay; just very, very into advertising his own board (and a wee bit jealous of Bellgab; in fact, he posted an obviously jealous statement about this fair board just a few days ago:  I should go dig it up).

Well this disappoints. A person can come on here, disagree with what someone says and try to reason with people and one may get made fun of so bad that they want to leave here and never come back however if the persons comes here and starts shit with every single person he talks to, then doesnt really even take offense to the backlash then he will get people defending him like he is a victim. Am I the only one who feels like he is in bizarro world? I think eveyone should just forget the memes and go back to feeling miserable about art quitting then we can take our anger and lash out at people who dont deserve it.

I think people are doing The Memes Thing as a way to vent their frustration.  I understand it, but I do feel sorry for the people who might be trying to read this group from their phones.  (I never do:  always use my Kindle or my PC, so it hasn't been an issue for me and some of them have been clever).

Btw, this is probably old news, since I missed the last 20-some pages of this thread and won't have time to go back and read it all (sadly, I have to try to keep my job), but has anyone else noticed that all the advertising has been pulled down from Artbell.com?

Hey Ravenna, I stalled out midway through book 3.  I think I got annoyed when the author introduced an entire new house of characters (from the south somewhere) and I was like But I just wanna see what happens to so-and-so that I've been following for the last thousand pages.  Whatcha think, is it worth picking up and trying again?

OMG,... you stalled out midway through 'A Storm of Swords'?  That's the best book of the series!  Try it again, and just let yourself drift along as GRRM wishes to take you, and you will be well rewarded for your patient efforts.  The conclusion of 'A Storm of Swords' is one of the best endings of a book I've read *ever* (and, being an English Major, I've read a *lot* of books).

Have at least 11 pages to get up to speed.  But- not to be overly optimistic...even Art wrote not to expect results right away....not necessarily today (Thursday).

Let's see what happens.  Maybe not on SXM, but somehow, he'll return.

Yeah, but in two years if Sirius doesn't let him out of his non-compete?  That seems forever.  Who wants to suddenly start working again at 70?  Although I suppose if you love what you do, it's not work.

(Another bottle of Chivas may be in order:  the one I bought on Monday is getting damn low).

All of the shows Art did are set to expire ON DEMAND in 3 days, Dark Matter is off the schedule for next week, representatives of Sirius say Art is gone--that's what I remember off top of my head.

That covers it pretty well.  Thanks.  Now you've got *me* worried.   :(

I love it, the first season made me run through all the books in a couple weeks... I couldn't wait. :)

It was really such a treat to have the stories I'd read and re-read for years come to life before my eyes, and pretty much live up to the visuals I'd already had in my head.  Jon Snow was particularly well casted, as were nearly all of House Lannister.

Feel like Sirius said NO and we are going to have some kind of wait(the full 2 years?)--that seems the most likely outcome especially with the clues we have.

Would you care to summarize those clues?  Thank you.  I have trouble keeping up with this board and sometimes have to skim quickly and end up missing stuff.

Well, I guess in their eyes that would make the On Demand listener less valuable to them; however, there are MANY of them, judging from the feedback in my FB group, and they are listeners to the show and should be considered part and parcel of the number of people who are listeners.  If the show's "ratings"/numbers depend JUST on people listening live, who can hear the commercials and perhaps call in as well, those numbers are going to be substantially lower, I think.

Art, please take note of the above.  I think I make a valid point here.

However on demand listeners do not hear commercials. Also they are unable to call into the show so as to contribute to the "caller base"

Your correct. Nada from the actual radios.

I'm confused:  if Sirius cannot determine how many people are listening to their car radios, then how do radio stations determine their ratings?  Or is this because Sirius is a satellite "radio" service?  Probably.

you do not know this to be fact.  you're presenting speculation and trying to spin it as common knowledge.  you say it with such certainty, too.

opie and anthony are also on siriusxm.  they say the company will give them ZERO information about the number of people who listen to their show.  i see no reason to believe art is any different.

Also, if they are trying to figure out how many are listening, without taking into consideration the numbers of people listening On Demand, then Sirius' numbers on listenership would be skewed.  I listen mostly On Demand, and I bet a lot of others do, too.  In my FB group, Art Bell Fans, most of the members in there have posted that they, also, listen On Demand.  It's one of the few perks of even having a Sirius subscription.

Why would Art say his base wasn't there?  Is he gauging that from the caller pool?

I'm confused about that, too.  All I can think of is that many of his base, like me, were not listening live.  I mostly listened On Demand:  just more convenient for me.  I wonder if Sirius keeps track of the number of people who listen to the show On Demand or not:  if they do not, that could skew the "numbers" falsely much, much lower.

Nah, he'll be back. He didn't test his stream thing out just as a ruse. And, plus, I think Sirius's bottom line is the bottom line, and they know, financially, they're better off to agree to art's requests.

I think as long as it doesn't COST Sirius anything, to let Art live free stream on his own website, that they very well might agree.  Because keeping Art will mean keeping SOME of the new subscribers:  the ones who signed up to listen to Art, and really enjoy the On Demand feature or have come to like some of their other stations, or dig being able to listen to him in the car (although I would never pay for that particular feature, although I'm sure it's nice:  I do like to listen to talk radio in the car).
