What could possibly go wrong?

29 year old mother in Omaha keeps a loaded weapon in her bag and her two year old reaches in and pulls the trigger and kills mum. Safety catches are for wimps. Stroke of luck it didn't kill anyone else including the other children she was with.

WOTR

I heard that on the radio today and the news tonight (kind of makes me think that it is not a common occurrence even in concealed carry states from all of the air time it got up here.)

I could not help but think that it is fortunate the kid was only 2.  He still has a chance to grow up and not really know what happened.  There was no mention of the age of the other kids.

***What the hell... The BBC has lumped the US and Canada in together for its coverage?

They had a focus group meeting and decided that 'Colonies across the Atlantic' wouldn't be received well in the colonies.  I do see their point.

WOTR

But that is exactly it.  They lumped a wonderful part of the commonwealth in with... well... Rebels and traitors.

Canadian and Australian news lumped together might work.  Mexico and the US, perhaps?

It just was the first time that I had noticed that we were put together as a category.  All joking aside, I hope the other kids who she was with were not related only because seeing your mother shot dead at close range would not be something I would wish on anybody.

The mom is a dumb ass for not having the safety on. I do feel for the child but life is hard and Daddy will find a new mommy. If it is put in foster care may god have mercy on the child's soul.

Oh and fuck you both "Merica" motherfuckers we will fuck shit up anyway we can and be proud of it!!1

But that is the point... Do you really want people confusing the nations?  Do you not worry about getting credit for screwing up things that we Canadians were responsible for?

When the headline read "Prime Minister found hiding in the closet" during the recent shooting on Parliament hill, are you not worried that people reading the BBC may confuse the nations and believe that it was the leader of the USA found hiding in the closet when the smoke cleared?

No sir, my concern is not that having the news feeds merged would reflect poorly on Canada- but rather that the world may unfairly judge the US. 8)

Like anyone would unfairly judge the US. The rest of the world love us. They love how we tell other countries how to live their lives and do things the right way(Merica Way). I mean seriously who does not absolutely love the US name one country ;D I dare you no I triple dog dare you ;D !!1

The article does not say what kind of gun.  There may not have been a safety -a poor weapon choice around children.

Like some cheap Raven .25 or something. Now, why this makes international news is an interesting point. Not that there is any "agendas" in the media out there!
ps: I thought that the USA, Canada, and Mexico were all "America"? :o Whatever happened to that talking-point? Or is Canada not going with the Obama Doctrine and open-border stuff herself?

Agenda? Hilarious! You don't want to hear it, so it's an agenda. You do want to hear it and it's important! Gun death happens so frequently over there that it's yesterdays chip paper before the paper has come off the stackers.

It does show that not everyone who has a gun should though. Because if she has a firearm that is loaded and not on safety, maybe she didn't strap her kids into the car? Or not guard an open fire? Still; accidents happen.

He he...that dog whistle is in full voice eh? Obama with all his gurn grabbin (he isn't) would have prevented this tragic death if guns had been banned as promised, but weren't. So yeah, Obama has failed in his promise to ban guns. I wonder what AJ has to say about it all?  :-\

How could I not hear about it? A death in Idaho made international news :o . Not that there isn't any "agenda," of course. Deaths in Idaho are always international news and featured on the BBC even. But no international news stories about other deaths in Idaho that day. Odd that. "No agenda" or "sexing up" the news there, of course.
ps: I will give AJ your regards if I happen to run into him!

Who said there was no other international news? Unless you think two year old grabbing a gun and shooting their mother isn't news? No, I guess not. The mass shooting in Canada made the news too; as did the airliner crash over in the far east, even though there were no Americans on it.

Juan

I spent many years in newsrooms.  There's no agenda. The trouble is that almost everyone comes from a common background - middle class economically, suburban living, state university education.  While newsrooms strive for racial and gender diversity, there's almost no cultural diversity.  Almost all are politically moderate to slightly left of center.  Because they don't make very much, they have to shop at Walmart, though they don't like to admit it.

They have a template for what makes a news story - and this one has a lot of elements - gun, baby shoots mother, shooting in a Walmart.  Those are exactly the elements news people see as making a legitimate news story.  There is no agenda.
