So, as a weekly family thing, the kids (and begrudgingly, also my wife) decided they wanted to learn how to play D&D  :). I played for several years when the game first came out and always had fond memories of those times, including attending a D&D camp for a week up at Shippensburg, PA. I remember that when I started playing, there was a Basic game that you'd start out on and then move up to Expert as you leveled up, and then onto other Master level etc. But then they changed it all to Advanced D&D and pretty much stopped with all the previous versions. I just pulled some very old modules and things from a box in the closet but I don't think I have everything I need to begin. For those D&D players here, what are the basic requirements for today's game that we need to start the fun? I don't plan on any of those figurines or big boards but I'll at least be getting those lovely dice, a Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual, ... what else?

They just released a new edition (Fifth edition) today. I think you can probably play with just the basic set for that.

Other than that, maybe the mat you draw maps on.

Yes when I think I know something I know nothing! Even when you touch the surface; Quote it will always be the surface!

Thanks, sir, a few other people pointed me to that also. I found the original rulebooks (from 35 years ago) in a box of old stuff and it looks pretty much like I already have most everything I needed for some simple fun, just needed to make sure there hadn't been any big changes.

LOL I thought that looked like Tom Hanks! I remember the title but can't believe I'd forgotten he was in that.

A couple dungeon generators you may want to check out.

Zeebo, those links could be very helpful, save me a lot of time as I relearn everything. I really appreciate it, thanks!

Glow-in-the-dark Cthulhu dice

Good thing my daughter didn't see those when we went to the store to get dice lol She immediately latched onto the most expensive ones. Gets that from her mom, I suppose. Genetics.  ::)

I don't know how useful this is, but i09 has been posting a lot of D&D related stuff. There seems to be a bit of resurgence. I've wanted to get into it since I was a teenager, but never had any friends who were interested.

Wow, apparently so, that's a lot of linkage to D&D articles.

It's funny, some years ago, I loaded the online D&D game onto my computer and was trying to explain to my oldest daughter exactly what the "real" role playing game was about. She couldn't quite grasp it until I took her down to the comic book store that hosts games at night. One group let us sit at their table and watch them play for about an hour. She had a blast, especially since there was a girl there playing too.

You might try checking into one of your local comic book stores to find a group to start up with. I seem to remember that the managing company of D&D, Wizards of the Coast, franchised something through participating comic/game stores called "Encounters" that opened up the game to new players.

I agree  go to your local shop, I would also recommend a getting some type of mat to play on, one with hexs, makes learning how to move easier, they guys I play with had a piece of poster board that was laminated so he could draw the basics places we were playing with.
