Thanks Hog - but they're designed to lower blood pressure, so is that a side effect, or just an effect?  It's my understanding that they're an extremely safe way of reducing the chances of cardio events.

Depends on the exact Beta Blocker, and yes generally they are safe.  Having a drug lower your blood pressure would be an effect, but having your blood pressure drop because you stand from sitting, or sit from lying down (which is postural hypotension would be a side-effect. Potentially an adverse effect if the postural hypotension leads to a syncopatic episode(passing out).
If we are talking safety, then yes, generally beta-blockers are safe for the majority.
