DM at 7pm is just too early for me

West coast live feed at 7pm is often just not clicking for me.  Can't get into the "midnight in the desert" mood that early, and I have to break in the middle to make dinner, etc.  Also I like to have a nice brandy or such along with the show, and I don't usually hit that till after ten.  Would prefer to listen live but guess I'll have to try out the refeed at 11pm.  Hope there are some nite owls out there doing the same, and posting to the DM show threads too, since they've been fun to follow along with sometimes.

Same here.  I think the only one I listened to live was the first show.

That's ok, our friends on the east coast don't have to stay up all night to listen.

Eddie Coyle

Oddly enough, 10pm is too early for me as well. But that's just a bad break on my part and out of my control, I can't really settle in until about 11:30-ish on most weeknights. That's life.

HMC

Same here. That's why I'm not subbing to SiriusXM. I only ever got to listen to the first two shows live, and if I can't hear live, I don't see the point of subscribing. I'd like to be able to sit down at 7pm and listen, but I'm always busy around the house getting dinner and generally getting ready for bed. It bums me out, but that's life.

I'm joining you guys... I usually can't start listening until the tail end of the program, if I'm lucky.   I always have to catch the refeed, or just pick it up on youtube the next day.   I'm okay with it though, just glad Art is back.

I'm usually downloading and listening to the shows later, anyway.  Love listening to 3 and a half hours of Art with virtually no commercials (the ones Art does for C Crane don't bother me).  I just click on the download around the witching hour and let the Moody Blues kick off the ride.

Thats ok, I listen to it thru On Demand at 8 am. I dont get the night time vibe, but it helps me get through the 1st 4hrs of work

Even though I will likely never buy a C Crane product, I feel like they are a necessity to the program.   I actually was considering buying a CCrane FM Transmitter, but the woman who answered the phone wouldn't tell me what the "hobby" output power was.   (My guess is it's probably in the 250-350 mw range)

I always download after the fact and listen later. I can't be a zombie at work as I get paid to think as hard as that can be.

Yep you're right - Art being back is the main thing.  I'll make adjustments as necessary.   :)

Yes I guess I just got into the spirit of listening live, with the live threads we've got goin' here, and the fun of "Wow, that's Art, he's talking from his desert studio, right now!".  However, your point about the commercial-free-ness of on-demand shows is a good one, and I'm sure I'll be incorporating those into my new plan.   :D

Sure but you're missing out on the extra bonus points for listening about scary stuff in the middle of the night, when every little creak in your house, or rustling in the bushes outside makes your adrenaline jump.  However, my style of listening with a glass of scotch or brandy in-hand subtracts those bonus points away, so we're about even.   8)

I agree that the 7:00-11:00 p.m. time slot (for me) is simply too early. I have a family which I love and want to be with a hell of a lot more than Art Bell. In the evenings I'm almost always with them until at least 8:00-10:00 p.m. or later.  Often if I hear any live DM show it's in the last hour. But as often as not if I've missed most of the show I just give up, and might listen to some of it the next day, but almost never have I listened to the whole show on replay.

Also, having unlimited rerun ability really doesn't help a lot because, well, it's a rerun. And with reruns there's no live posting here, which is half the fun.

My second freebie runs out this week, and I've got one more address I can use before I start making them up simply for Sirius. As it is I'm not inclined to sign up. But maybe I need to try it without the capacity to hear Art at all. Maybe that will the heart fonder.

The best timeslot was what Art Bell had in the mid 90s, a FIVE hour show from 11pm-4am on the west coast.
You could watch all the primetime TV shows from 8-11PM and then listen to Art's show.

AM radio schedule back then was the best.  Something about the subject matter requires the late time slot.  But well, it isn't conducive to raising a family with children.

Sirius doesn't really work because it isn't live (delay on AM was like 30 seconds instead of 4 minutes w/ Sirius on the 'net).   Sirius keeps dropping so as the show progresses, you get less and less live.   And yes, it is too early.  But, it is Art Bell!

Yes, I'm going to get a sirius radio soon to broadcast from...I do however enjoy the ios apps, as they serve a great purpose of getting the shows onto my own pc in MP3 format vs buying that C-Crane 2 gigabyte MP3 recorder.  I'll just use one of my Terabyte drives thank you and my iphone or ipad lol...don't need another gadget.

So cool, especially, if I remember right, he had Friday shows where you could stay up and listen to the whole thing no worries.

Hey, no one complain. The show starts at 1:00pm for me. Plus I am at work. At least it makes the afternoons whiz by. Unfortunately I don't get the nightime spooky vibe either.

Now that I have been hooked on the live shows, I feel weird if I miss the live show and then listen on demand. It feels like I am missing something perhaps due to the fact that I can't call in if I want to.

Anyway, Art is back and I guess that is all that matters.

Scully

I'm another one on the east coast who finds 10 pm comes too early for me to always be able to settle in with Dark Matter, and I'm also one who likes the spookiness of late night reality.  Like most or all of you, I've learned to adjust lest the Gods That Be think me ungrateful and take Art away again.  :(

It IS Art, after all. And he's back!  8)

For me 10p is not so bad. I am more ok with the time than the days. I would love to have Art on Friday and Saturday. Then I would have little anxiety about staying up. So it comes down to what I find more important. Do I need to listen live? or Would listening later at night and on Fridays be more mood setting? Tough choice.

" Heresy and blasphemy in the temple of Bell indeed !
All ye hear my words and hearken and ready the boiling cauldrons of sewage and cast the unbelievers down and those who wouldst leave the midsts of our worship of the King. "

" Ok, boys ! Lower him in ! And be quick about it ! "

Heck, yeah!  I don't want to have to start sacrificing virgins or cutting hearts outs again.  That really messes up the day.

PDXBellfan

I love the "on demand" function. No commercials and I can listen whenever I want. I usually listen to Art while I'm working during the day, and I can go back and listen later if I don't finish the show. The on demand is one feature that I'm loving about XM.

Fixed it for you.  :)

I wanted to follow up my original post with a little tip that might help some.  I listen via the internet and I realized that if you start playing the show at 7pm, then hit Pause right away, it will buffer up to several hours of the show.  Then you can just let it sit there buffering, and you can come back at say my preferred listening start time around 9-10pm and just hit Play.  Of course it's not actually live then, as you're lagging behind, but it does feel semi-live and you don't have to wait till 11pm for the rebroadcast, or do on-demand the next day.

Once nice advantage of this style is you can use the little slider to jump forward a bit in the buffer and blow past the commercials, if desired.  Note that you can lose your buffer if you either switch channels, or Sirius crashes on you.

You don't need to start it at 7 to do that.  If you tune in a few hours late, just move that slider back to 7PM and the show starts there.  It's handy.

My original thought when I saw this post was to say 'time is relative.'
But that's a smart ass comment, and I refuse to post it.  So there.

Ok, smacking myself on the forehead.  I seem to always find the longest path from point A to B.  I will try this mysterious "Start Now" button of which you speak.   :)
