Hey, Art. I heard the audio where Curtis called you the other day, and you sound great, but it sounded like your voice was being a little aggressively de-essed. Just an opinion.
Wikepedia says that De-essing is any technique intended to reduce or eliminate excessive prominence of sibilant consonants, such as "s", "z" and "sh".  I'm just wondering what that sounds like on a practical level.  Are those sounds softened, less prominent, do they almost disappear?  Also, what is the practical reason for doing this?

When volume levels are compressed, the higher end frequencies tend to become disproportionately prominent. So, you need to "de-ess" the audio so it sounds more balanced and you don't get slapped in the face with sibilance.

The problem is, if the audio is too aggressively de-essed, it can make a voice sound really weird. Actually, in some instances I've heard it cause the speaker to sound deaf. Art's de-esser wasn't even close to that extreme, but I did notice it. That's the key. You want it to work, but the listener shouldn't know it's working.

Hell, I remember when Cali was English speaking.

I see what you did there. As a Californian, I can validate your statement.

Now I'm seeing Cat scale ads. I guess it's because I posted some truck driving bullcrap the other day.

Why do you hate Art Bell?

It's that obvious? I didn't think anyone would pick up on the George Noory is King subliminal messages in my trailer.

Cool.  I actually had no idea.

So, it seems like it is mostly a digital "thing?"  This would not happen on, say 1970's recordings?  Now, suppose that I convert my old 1940's vinyl to MP3 format without "remastering" it... Will those higher end frequencies naturally become too prominent due to the compression- or is it more noticeable when the source of the recording is already in a high end digital format (in this case, Arts voice?)

Koala bears are Australian. Noory has a koala bear avatar from what I remember. Coincidences? There are none.

This shames us greatly. So much so that I kick a koala in the nuts every time I see one.

The act of de-essing and/or the need to do so can occur in both digital and analog environments. De-essing as a concept has been around forever... long before the advent of digital audio technology.

What you're talking about here is compression in the form of decreasing file size by removing audio information (converting .wav to .mp3, etc.). I'm talking only about volume level compression where you increase lower volumes or decrease higher volumes, all on the fly. Think of that "punchy" FM music sound we're all familiar with. The volume doesn't vary and you don't have to turn the radio up and down as the song changes or if someone speaks at a different volume. That's the kind of compression I'm referring to.

Well then, I hope Art does that with his stream.  I always have to turn my volume up to hear Noory's guests, while keeping it low enough not to disturb anyone.  When the ads come on, they're so loud I fear hearing loss if I don't madly grab for my tablet and turn it down.

Once again, I thank you for simplifying this to make it understandable.  Too much technical jargon would have turned my mind to mush- but this is a perfect explanation. :)
