Seriously, bypass buying 1 pack of cigarettes

I've wanted to quit smoking for a while now, but I've gone about it in a habitually half-assed manner. Now, I have a goal! Even though we'll have more than enough after we cancel the cable, it's still one of those psychological nudges that I really need. "If I'm not smoking anymore, then that money is going toward a Sirius subscription."

Art Bell! I'm giving up smoking for Art Bell! If I keep telling myself that, this whole endeavor seems a little easier. (And by the way, if anybody has any little tips, I'd appreciate them.)

I know it stinks of prank, but that book has already been verified on this forum through links from several book sellers.

Oh my God really... Late night snacks? Just another example of how Coast to Coast has become a parody of Itself and a complete joke.

Not that anyone asked, but my opinion on AB going to SiriusXM is that it makes perfect sense.

Having worked in traditional radio for a major conglomerate within the last 5 years, I can vouch that it is a very restrictive medium today.  Most times flaws (too many spots, same music over and over, etc) have nothing to do with personalities but are a result of corporate management structures that micro manage every little thing in an effort to keep stockholders happy.   Radio has changed DRASTICALLY within the last 20 years.

I figure there were two ways for AB to get the creative freedom he wanted:

1. Podcasting (a la Adam Carolla)
2. SiriusXM

Seeing that AB has been a traditional radio guy, I am guessing the wild west nature of podcasting was too out there for him (though as a podcaster myself I love it).

So, that leaves SiriusXM as the only logical choice.  As for the cost, it is affordable for most people (unless you are truly in poverty) if you take advantage of the various deals out there.  Few things (including terrestrial radio when you consider wasted time on heavy spot loads) are truly free.

Spot-on, Jim.  I enjoy your podcasts, btw.

The story about the roadhouse.....man-oh-man! Good stuff, Jim!

I have Sirius/XM, and I hope Art puts his shows on Audible and/or Itunes as well.

Art / Keith get on it! =)

It just makes it easy to have all the shows archived for me on my laptop, for long drives etc.

..I get my Opie and Anthony / Ron and Fez daily fix from Audible as well, works great and if they can do it.. it really can't be hard to set up...

And who on this entire planet thinks for a minute that George could actually manage to make anything in the kitchen.  He is constantly talking about eating out in restaurants - I bet he rarely even eats at home or cooks anything for himself.  May as well be a home fix-it book "by" George - that would be just as unbelievable.

How did it go after hardly any sleep from waiting up for Art's big news?

it went pretty well i think... but i have no idea... now comes the 3 month waiting to get my results...  this whole process sucks  :P

Sorry to flog the horse, but with regard to the money for Sirius, it could be that folks are in a situation like mine.  It's not that you have to pay, its where is the money coming from?

I am disabled and on a fixed income.  I take 13 prescription drugs per day.  That with my monthly bills does not leave extra money, even if it is only $15 a month.  I hope to make it work out, as I really want to hear AB, but sometimes its not quite as easy as it looks on the surface.

For the conspiracy theorists, this may be Art's plan to keep out a certain demographic by having it a pay service! LOL just kidding...

Has anyone here heard takes from HOWARD STERN and PHIL HENDRIE concerning Art's return to radio on Sirius?  I would love to hear what they said--I haven't been able to find it.

You know that those 2 would say something since they both love pontificating on all things radio--and with Howard now having Art join him on Sirius AND Phil with his great impersonation of Art...they had to say something.

Just a reminder -- $15/month is the **max** you will spend... that's if you just do a straight sign up thru the website. If you call Sirius, many have reduced that to about $8/month (paying for a year). Others have posted a link to 24.99 for 6 months for the radio side, then you can tack on internet listening for $2 more a month. 10 to 15 minutes of internet sleuthing and you'll definitely not be paying $15 month.

Derpspiracy, re: smoking. I want to throttle doctors when they suggest people taking SSRIs to quit smoking. Fuck that.

I chew snuff (I know, terrible habit). Made many efforts to quit, failed. About 10 years ago, after my GP wanted to put me on a SSRI to quit tobacco, I tore up the prescription and bought a bottle of St. John's Wort. Surprisingly, it worked really well. I experienced withdrawals, but there was none of the 'I want climb the walls and gouge my eyes out' anxiety.

Based on my own experience, I'd recommend something like St. John's Wort and 5HTP for general mood enhancement. You still gotta tough out the withdrawal, but you'll be in less of a shitty mood.

Always check contraindications, I'm not a doctor, not dispensing medical advice blah blah blah. One possible side effect I do know with SJW is light sensitivity... I was taking it while living in Arizona and noticed no deleterious effect.

Definitely would not take anything that fucks with your brain chemistry if you're already on an SSRI, lithium salts, benzos etc etc.

Two more I just thought of -- Valerian and GABA (gamma amino butyric acid [iirc]). SJW, 5HTP, GABA and Valerian. Valerian can feel like a mini valium jr or a benzo light, so I would only take that in the evening until you're used to its effects.

I don't think anyone is suggesting peopel quit smoking and listen to At that way. When I brought it up, I just meant skip one pack... Out of 30+ packs a month, it can be done.

The Daily Grail, a major alt news aggregator, has a minimal blip w/link about Art returning, although I don't understand why they didn't report this much earlier. http://www.dailygrail.com/

The other big alt aggregator, The Anomalist, had it up Tuesday morning. http://www.anomalist.com/ What The Anomalist says is so good I'm going to reprint it here:

"Despite the fact that it's only Tuesday, we are certain this is the best news we're gonna hear all week. After over a decade of silence, paranormal pioneer Art Bell is making a dramatic return to the airwaves in September. He was sorely missed and his new show, 'Art Bell's Dark Matter' sounds as if it will be pretty much the same as 'Coast to Coast' when he hosted it, a concept that has also been sorely missed and is very much needed. As Art explains, 'There's probably more interest in the genre now than when I did it. When I did it, I was damned near alone.' "

Hmmm. "He was sorely missed" is just a hair away from saying "We hated George Noory with a white-hot passion."

As of Sept. 16 we will no longer be terrorized by the Greaper!

nah, the upcoming week's schedule isn't normally posted at the c2cam website until late on Thursday, so wait another 16hours or so.

PremRat might keep the Somewhere in Time replays until the week of Sept 16 when Art actually starts broadcasting the new show?

I'm guessing PremRat's gearing-up for "Nowhere in Time (NIT) 'wit Dave Noorie" and will shove it in as a replacement ASAP.  It'll be interesting to see how many stations actually go with "NIT 'wit Dave Noorie" on Saturday's.  I'm thinking my local station will probably go with the weekly farm report and a fish'n and hunt'n update instead of a rehash of Dave's worst.  Heck, I'd rather listen to a weekly NASCAR summary than Dave.

"It’s just after two a.m. in Los Angeles and there are only a few cars on the 405. On the East Coast, the diners have yet to open for the morning rush. It’s too late for dinner, too early for breakfast, and there’s nothing in your freezer to throw in the microwave. You’re looking for something a little sweet or a little salty (or maybe a little of both) to keep the midnight munchies at bay in the long hours before dawn. . . .  What’s to eat?

George Noory has put together the ultimate after-midnight cookbook: Late-Night Snacks for late-night radio. Whether you’re hankering for nostalgic treats, like homemade Toaster Tarts or rib-sticking Dumplings Love You, or something more exotic, like spicy Hurried Curry Pockets or Asian Fusion Salad, George Noory shows you how to whip up quick, delicious snacks with whatever ingredients are lying around your kitchen in the wee hours."

We all know George loves late nite (pizza rolls) snacks while doing his P90X

I agree I am tired of hearing people complain about the cost of Sirius as well. If you can't eliminate SOMETHING to come up with that money, I question how hard you are trying in life. Seriously, bypass buying 1 pack of cigarettes, bypass a drink or two at the bar, don't go on that one long drive to save that in gas money, go to the dollar store for a ton of things that are of equal quality at a retail store (people should really be doing this anyways). There are tons of ways to come up with that tiny amount of money, just have some willpower and figure it out. It's not going to change, so bitching about it until people's ears bleed is pointless. I'm not trying to be rude, but if you can't shave at max, $15 a month off of something (actually if you get certain promos it's like $6 to $8 a month)  and move it to this, then you need to take a hard look at what you are doing with yourself in life.

As for the comment about the music business... You're so right. Touring costs have inflated so much, and promoters guarantees have gone way down as well, unless you are essentially top 10 draw in your genre. A lot of club owners want to pay little or nothing to bands. I had an off night a while back, and I have multiple PA systems at my place, one of the clubs I frequent asked me if I was busy the next night and wanted to guest DJ. I said sure, but how much money are we talking about and he goes "$50 for the night. That's more than anyone else I have come in here" I almost fell off the bar stool. I told him my rock bottom for 4 hours is $300 (and that's a 'friend price'), and he should feel like the biggest dick in the world to offer people that kind of money. A lot of younger musicians have no idea they should be getting paid. They get happy to make $25, and all they are doing is hurting themselves, and other musicians in the area.

I'll tell you this. I know it sucks, but you need to refuse to play for not enough money so this stops.

Thanks for the preaching.  I never asked to be in the position I'm in.  I worked hard for a good career but I've still been out of work a long time, dealing with sick parents, and don't have $15 a month.  I don't need to be told my life sucks or that I'm somehow lazy.  I'm not complaining, I wish Art well.  I haven't seen many others complaining either.. just trying to figure out ways to listen to Art or admitting they can't do it.

Anyway sorry to go off.  I just think when people are doing okay it can be hard to understand that some of us aren't and it's not out of lack of effort, and that there's nothing left to cut out.
