Heard that last night ...... click
C2C is such a waste of time ......

The local station replays the last two hours of the previous C2C show.  I happened to be up late last night and was curious if Snoory was still doing our favorite musical performer at the end of the Friday night show.  I was in the mood to check out the train wreck.   Sure enough, just like a chronic infection, Snoory stated he'd be performing his bizarre ritual of UFO Phil.   :P  Click...... barely got the radio off in time.  I hope Snoory enjoyed his extra time torturing patrons at the local after-hours karaoke bar.

Some guests probably hope that buttering up Noory will get them to come back on more to plug their own books and other junk.  :P

Please, somebody tell me that I heard wrong.  Coast is on in the background because I have been too lazy to get up and turn it off.  I am almost positive that George just claimed that he was approached to serve in the navy because the PRESIDENT?!? wanted to offer him a direct commission.  Oh, please tell me that I was wrong and he really did not release this torrent of BS.

I have to be wrong... I have to be wrong... there is no way that I heard right.

Technically 'true', but not nearly as impressive as Noory wanted to make it sound. Direct commissions are offered by the president the same way birthday cards for 100-year-olds are. Reagan had never heard of George Noory, even after his auto-pen signed the commission for him.

WOTR

Thank-you.  I am not really aware how the military works in the U.S.  I have heard of commissions and the likes but had never heard anybody else basically say that it was because the president wished it.

Juan

At least we now know what happened to Jimmy Hoffa.  sNoory was among the last to talk to the man. Obviously he entered the witness protection program to avoid another interview.

I heard the Snoory BS last night, too.  Typical, where he was trying to "one-up" the guest with another self-aggrandizing, embellished story in his usual manner of false modesty.  ::)

Direct commissions are used when the military branch (Navy in this case) is having trouble filling billets which must be manned by commissioned officers. In Noory's case it was public relations. A little hard to believe that the Navy couldn't find experienced officers who would want a cushy job like that, but it may be one of those positions that result in career dead-ends, which may be why Noory only stayed nine years.

The President of the United States is was "directly involved" in both drafting a person into the military and in commissioning; that is, making someone an officer in the US military. (Draft ended in 1973.) I've never seen George mention his rank which makes me think he was an enlisted man. Ordinarily an officer is proud of his rank and is quick to mention he was made an "officer and gentleman" by act of Congress. When a man was drafted he received a notice that said "Greetings from the President of the United States of America", which gave the recipient the bad news, and a date, time and place to show up for induction. So that was one way of the President "approached" you to tell you he "needed" you.

But seems I ran across something online that said George was a full Lieutenant in the Naval Reserve (rank equivalent to that of an Army Captain). If he indeed was or became an officer George at some point would have been "commissioned". The commission is an order from the President of the United States authorizing the rank and says as follows:

The President of the United States of America

To all who shall see these presents, greeting:

Know Ye, that reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity and abilities of .................., I do appoint ["him" or "her"] a ["Second Lieutenant" or "Ensign"] in the [name of service] to.....

So that's another way of being "approached" by the President. In neither of which ways did the President have any idea who George was.

I was laughing and shaking my head when I heard pompous Snoory talking about his "personal" invitation.  He made it sound almost as if Ronnie had personally given him a call in the '80s and pleaded for his service.

He did mention about going to OCS but I don't recall any mention of rank.  I'm sure he did a great job of personally serving his country behind a desk somewhere in the bureaucracy.

Don't get me wrong, I greatly respect those who have served in the military but someone like Snoory does a disservice when he blows his horn out of proportion, IMHO.  Of course, nothing surprising about Snoory pulling that routine, once again.  He'd make a job as a waiter at Waffle House sound as if he ran the entire chain.  No insult to those gainfully employed at the WH intended.

Tara

Noory often mentions his Naval service, but I never recall him actually stating he was ever on a ship.  He probably can't even swim and would get sea sick at sea.

HorrorRetro

Noory's naval service was him picking lint from his navel behind a desk.

This sounds like almost the exact words George used when he would claim to have been 'approached to run for President by friends'.  Making it sound as if these friends were campaign managers, fund raisers, pollsters and all the rest and had already looked into it and seen a path to victory.  Imagine George Noory fumbling through his index cards in speeches, interviews, and debates.  Imagine him getting up early every day with a full schedule.

I thought it was equally laughable, yet slightly more likely, when a then 50-something George Noory would talk about working on his knuckleball and trying out for the st Louis Cardinals.

What a dumb douche this guy is to even think people believe his BS.

fysisist

By definition, the US President is the CIC of all the armed forces, so it could be said that all orders issued in the military ultimately flow from that authority.  Noory was offered a commission the same way that Major Hassan who shot up a bunch of his colleagues at Ft. Hood a few years ago was offered a commission.

Pitcher for the Cards?  I hadn't heard that one.   ;D  Apparently a multi-talented standout, except as a radio host.  ;)  The only reasons I listen anymore are to put me to sleep and to see just how stupid, stupid can be.  It can be aggravating at times when I'm close to nodding-off only to be jolted back to Nooryland with a WTF moment.

I still see his true talent being a lounge lizard at a dive bar in some sleazy area in L.A., belting-out UFO Phil, and encouraging the stunned patrons to "sing-along."  :o

Noory has mentioned many times on the air that he was an officer in the Navy for 9 years, achieving the rank of Lieutenant, but never reaching even Lt. Commander in that time.
He said he was always behind a desk, in some kind of PR job. Probably mostly in the Navy Reserve?
Noory mentioned recently he got out of the Navy shortly before his unit would have been sent to Iraq, probably in the early 1990s.

Last night for the first time he claimed that someone connected to President Reagan offered him a naval commission, so he accepted it. But if he was that considered that important and had a president's favor and recommendation, why didn't he advance farther and faster in rank? He should have reached a rank of Commander in that time if he really had a president behind him. Something sounds fishy...  8)

A new cliche that we should start, instead of saying "something sounds fishy," say "something sounds Noory."  I can just see a Wiki explanation of the phrase in a few years.  ;)

or how about pulling a "Noory" when you only half listen to somebody and give responses that essentially have no meaning but can be taken either way so that you can just let the person talk while you fidget with your naval.

Yes, a 42-year-old as a Lieutenant no doubt was the subject of many snickers at the base OC. At that age most naval officers are Commanders (equivalent Lieutenant Colonel) or even Captains (equivalent Colonel). But then most other officers had more time in service at that age, because they joined up much younger. See, Noory signed on in 1983 - when he was 33 years old. 33 is gettin' kinda old to be joining the military, and it almost screams "Loser!"....UNLESS you're joining the Reserve or NG. Now, I know Noory left the service as Naval Reserve, but did he originally sign up as NR, or did he do active service and then move to NR? It makes a difference.

He must have joined straight to the Reserve - it would be too good to think of George like Bill Murray in Stripes , an aimless, unemployed slacker, who joins the military just to have a job and 3 squares. Surely it's not that good, and he joined the NR as a part-time job with great bennies.

You have my vote on this one..

At the risk of loosing my haters card... The show was actually pretty good last night (at least the second half that I really heard.  The guest talking about Watergate, JFK and Hoffa was interesting.

Where I usually say that the interviewer (such as Knapp) really brought out the best in the guest I have to say that the guest really helped Noory along.  Every time the guest was trying to say something and Noory would interrupt it seemed the guest would answer the question and go back to where he was, make a comment that he was basically continuing his story where he was interrupted and carry on.  Even Noory was O.K (I believe this is the highest praise I have ever uttered in connection with George.)  I do not know if the facts were correct (I was born long after these events and have very little understanding of them as I have never taken the time to look into them.)  Having said that, the guest seemed to be informed, know the answers, was engaging and was either a really good BS artist or had done his research.  (Either is perfectly acceptable as a Coast guest...)

While George did work in his personal story about being the last to interview Hoffa and the likes a number of times I think he is actually, genuinely interested in the story surrounding Hoffa and was not as disruptive, rude, or uninformed as usual.  He may even have pulled the show off using only a few of the cue cards that were prepared.

The guest made the show as much as Noory- but at least Noory did not ruin it.

Step the fuck aside, Michelle Obama, George Noory is gonna use his new P90X bod to get America fit with -

Don't know if anybody else caught this or not, but at the very start of the "news segment" did George refer to the "billions of Japanese" that have been affected by the Fukushima disaster?? At first I was SURE I must have misheard him because surely nobody is stupid enough to think that "billions" of people live in Japan... But then I remembered WHO was talking and quickly reevaluated my position on this matter... So if anyone else heard this as well and can confirm this to be true, it would be much appreciated...

I got called into work tonight and the only station I can pick up is playing Coast. I haven't listened to C2C in at least six months (except for Knapp). I wondered to myself if Noory still has his child death/mutilation fetish and I'll be damned if he didn't mention a 12 year boy dying from the flesh eating bacteria as his third headline story. He also briefly interviewed "The Turd" Mish Shedlock.

At the website of tonight's main c2c guest Katherine Albrecht she has a photos section where she has photos taken of her with Noory and producer Tommy.
The one with her and Noory looks funny, Noory looks like a cardboard cutout of him next to her - was he actually there? :D

That is Tommy?!?  I picture some young kid when I hear Tommy.  On the bright side, get him to drop a few pounds and Noory is well on his way to attaining the weight loss goal for the nation.

I recall hearing George say that he would come into LA and when he and Tommy went to dinner they would just share the food.  I now have to assume that he meant that they only ordered one of everything on the menu and shared rather than two of each dish...  The day that man had half a serving at dinner would be the day he ate at McDonalds on the drive home.

I wonder how Tommy likes hearing George spout off about fat Americans during the broadcast?

At least he is wearing basic black.  On one of Noory's past video chats that Coast Insiders can view he popped into the frame for a few seconds wearing an incredibly hideous Hawaiian shirt.  I am still not sure if it was an ironic statement or if he just has bad taste.
