What would make Coast to Coast AM better?

Started by HorrorReporter, May 25, 2011, 07:40:44 PM

Serious question.. we have all been busy in here saying what is not good.. I'm looking for some talk on what can make it right?

Less sideshows (2012 nonsense) or more? ...
Less UFOs (too much Knapp?) or more?...
No more Alex Jones and 9/11 or more..?

I have some ideas. Some of them revolve around a mixture of hosts, more array of guests.. and open lines without call screeners...

Any other thoughts?

I'm getting to a "to save this patient, we must kill him" type of attitude. Personally, I wish it would be scaled back to a weekend program, with Ian on Saturdays, Knapp on Sundays. This 7 days a week/365 days a year format has worn thin. Oversaturation of idiocy.

Very interesting idea.. only weekends..

You know, there are times I think the Coast format is perfect for Ian,  he has fun with the bumper music and he knows how to leave people hanging that they want more. As far as Knapp, I sometimes think the format works against his straight laced style, and when he forgets breaks it doesn't flow right..

But the most 'meat' to the shows appears to be on weekends.. four hours a night is a lot.

I don't want to see Coast die, though. I'm not there yet.

I think 7 days a week is still viable. But clear channel, premier radio have completely lost the map.

Clear Channel/Premier are definitely pulling the puppet strings here.  Reminds me of trying to fight City Hall.

Seven days a week shouldn't be undoable.  I'd be ok if they would cut down to 3 hours a night, since it's become almost inevitable that the first hour of the show is a throw-away where George gets to play his favorite role as a newsman.  Blech ...

As for less sideshows, dunno for sure what you mean, Horror. I love the paranormal, the unexplained, the strange, the mysterious.  Hate the gloom and gloom stuff, like 2012.

More UFO's and George Knapp for me.

No Alex Jones at all, and completely ditch the political agenda.  It really turns off people like me, because we are of a different political persuasion.

Just my thoughts. Be interesting to compare notes in this thread.

New host with a modicum of intellectual curiosity.

Cut out the politics and preachy Creationism and End Times bullshit.

More aliens, cryptozoology, ghosts, occult, paranormal, science, fun stuff!

More hilarious crazies, fewer I-want-to-punch-the-radio crazies.

LMH, RCH, Glynis McCants: NEVER AGAIN.

I couldn't have said it better!

There is plenty of good competition out there online.. Someone will be the next Art Bell.. It will just be difficult being noticed with all the noise. But as we speak thousands are trying to create their niche .. Coast to coast may not be around in about 5 years if things don't improve soon

I think what the show needs is someone to come in who is willing to try to make it their own and dedicate themselves to that. C2C was Art's baby and Noory has always been the replacement. He's doing his job because it's a paycheque and he can possibly increase his own sense of celebrity. He seems to have no interest in the material whatsoever beyond these reasons imo.

"Passing the torch" does not imply "lighting the way".

Ian is my favorite out of the current batch of regular hosts, but even he is obviously tired of the same-old same-old. This is why his guests are so far afield of what the shows usual theme, extending to sports conspiracy and true crime stuff. Fortunately for me I like a lot of the new directions he's gone in as it's given me a chance to take a peek into some topics I never would have otherwise. Ian's approach to the show would be general weirdness rather than strict paranormal stuff I think, which is good as well. I don't think he should be given the reigns of the show, at times he seems fed up and bored with some of the guests that are thrown his way and frankly I think he's a bit tired of the show in general.

In fact none of the current batch seem to be in a position to revitalize the show any time soon. What we need is someone new who is willing to make it their life for a while.

personally id like to just have it commercial free.....I wish it went xm only or something. IT would be great to have a coast xm channel that played coast and coast related shows 24/7 commercial free

1. OPEN phone lines (like Art actually had), and someone who knows how to actually handle them.
2. Someone who actually wants to make the show their own (mentioned by someone else in this thread).
3. No more flaky numerologists/astrologers.
4. No more psych majors who have turned into bullshit metaphysical meanderers that then evoke endless responses from noory like: "great tips," "that is sooo true," and "could it be angels?"
5. More conspiracies.
6. More batshit crazy guests that draw out the really weird (and entertaining) callers (providing they are UNscreened).

Totally agree with you here.  I am totally bored by the Oprah After Dark, self-help type guests.  The current quest, Ms. Levin, who wants to help listeners deal with their 2012 anxiety is a good example.  Let's all think positive thoughts and everything will be great, blah, blah, blah, we will all be so enlightened (humans have been dimwits for the past several thousand years, but now that will change?).  I love well researched conspiracy theories, and wild guests with “unique” ideas.

Less Linda Moulton Howell
86 Richard Hoagland - he can sell crazy on a podcast
Callers cannot read from religious texts
Better call screeners. People who are obviously insane don't need to be encouraged

This would pretty much fix everything else that we hate about c2c in its current form.

Just fire Noory.

What's broken can't/won't be fixed with Noory at the mic, and he's holdin' on even through the fire alarm.

...then perhaps fire is the answer here...

Less network interference. I blame alot of their show topics on the network. Notice how anytime a show comes up that is UFO or paranormal it's billed as "classic" Coast to Coast.

Less network. More Ian Punnett. Less right wing-ism designed to appeal to the Limbaugh audience and ratings they are chasing...

Bravo, Bob.  Don't know how I missed that one!   :-[

On the Fri. Jan 6 show hosted by George Knapp, during open lines he kept saying the lines are full.  Then why play the lengthy Ross Mitchell list of telephone numbers to call in at the top of the hour plus at the bottom of the hour?  This consumes valuable air time that could be devoted to squeezing in another caller or perhaps playing longer bumper music instead.  my 2 cents.

Morgus

I noticed last night George Knapp told callers on the air to bring their "A" game and got some good caller stories.
Is that compared to Noory's callers that bring their "F" game?  :P

When a parasite takes hold, in order to save the person, you often must kill the parasite.  Coast doesn't necessarily have to be the casualty in this illustration.

The viri responsible for the spiralling decline isn't an individual, it's a collective -Premiere. C2C needs an amputation from that gangrenous entity. As long as Premiere is involved, C2C is in Terry Schiavo/Karen Ann Quinlan territory.

In the spirit of your thread I will add my two cents.  With the varied audience that coast has and the varied topics I think it may be time to kill the idea of one host.  When it was Bells baby, he was able to make it what he wanted, now it's a train wreck (sorry MV; don't mean to tie in what coast has become with what you produce...)

Cut down Noory to once every two weeks.  He can interveiw every quack he can find every second Tuesday (and I can know to tune out.)  Knapp gets his twice a month, and Ian his.  Knapp can restrict his show to the topics that interest him and Ian can do the same.  Give Wells his show, and Simone his to do the topics that actually interest them so that they are not interviewing guests on topics they have no knowledge of nor any wish to learn about.  After that, bring in a few more regular hosts (a few on paranormal topics to see how it would fly with today coast audience.)

Possibly Somebody like Kaku would even do a couple shows a month so that we could have a scientist interviewing scientists (don't worry, Noory can keep Hoagland as his "science" adviser every second Tuesday.)

This would allow Coast to become a show that would broaden horizons.  It is unfair to expect Noory to interview a serious scientist, and unfair to expect Knapp to interview a doctor of quackery.  Let each host stick to their interests and strengths; give them each a couple of weeks to read the book or do the research and each can be prepared, fresh and informed.

We all know that it will never happen.  We will have Noory for the foreseeable future followed by another complete failure 5 nights a week.

that in particular is an excellent idea.
