No Agenda w/Adam Curry & John C. Dvorak

Coasted2astop

I searched and was surprised not to find this here.

It is the No Agenda Podcast with John C Dvorak (tech journalist) & Adam Curry (reformed MTV VJ). It has been my staple for conspiracies and media scrutiny since the failure of C2C for me. It's live every Sunday and Thursday morning about noon Eastern, 9 Pacific (Right now, in fact).  Runs a little over 2 hours per episode and it's listener supported so it has no sponsored ads..they do take time to ask for donations in a couple of spots.

Without mentioning the obvious person with this talent, it takes a special host to be able to make callers (screened or unscreened) interesting to me. Most that call into shows are idiots. No Agenda has no callers..lots of media clips to mock and deconstruct, but the only voices you hear live are adam and john.

In the morning.... I had to listen to this show 3 times before I started liking it, but now I am a fan.  They make some interesting points.  Give it a try.

Personally, I'm more of an Adam person than John.  But, they are a good team.  I like the way they call people 'douchbags'.

i just can't warm up to adam's whole, "hey, look at me.  i'm cool" thing.  also, he's sooo frequently wrong.  it annoys me.  i like john's no bullshit approach to life.

I remember reading Dvorak's columns in 'PC World' when I was a teenager. I don't remember much about it, but I thought it was fun/interesting to read. Maybe I'll give a listen.

Another Dvorak fan here.  I think he's been in tech for so long, he's seen the "latest and greatest" come and go so many times, that he's developed a healthy cynicism that makes his commentary that much better.  Some hate him as an outdated crank, but I think that perspective is what makes him a fun read/listen.

I searched, found this here, and was shocked it has been in mothballs for so long.

No Agenda "goes live" at 9 am *Pacific time Sunday, and Thursday.
*Time zone offset: UTC - 7 hours

So long to the mothballs!

ITM! For a (now;) biweekly live streamed podcast, No Agenda does not seem to get much pull around here. NA has come a looong way since September 16, 2011, at 01:07:52 AM... the last NA post in this thread.

The best podcast in the universe deserves better than years of neglect!

I'm here to refresh it... as freestyle PR for "Crackpot" Adam Curry, and "Buzzkill" John..... C..... DVORAK, and Team No Agenda.

Known to insiders as The Curry Dvorak Consulting Groupâ,,¢, anyone just tuning in should get a feel for the NA culture by reading the NA Wikipedia entry:

I listen to No Agenda pretty regularly these days, but I only do so because I want to hear John C. Dvorak.

Never heard of this before, I may have to check it out

Geez, I had the cognitive hiccups and kept reading "Adam Curry" as "Adam Carolla" for some reason.  I remember when he was "The Podfather," and did a podcast called The Daily Source Code.  Back in '04 or '05, he played a song from a silly CD some friends and I recorded in the guise and style of a "forgotten" fictional band that he'd found on The Podsafe Music Network, which is now called Music Alley.  We were ecstatic, because even though podcasting was fairly new and had a very small audience, we thought that since he'd been a famous VJ on MTV word would get around, we'd get a big bump in sales, and the money would start rolling in any day. That's what we thought, anyway, but it never happened.  The checks must have gotten lost in the mail.  Yeah, that's the ticket.

I regularly listen to the various TWiT podcasts and Dvorak is on a lot of the shows, he's always been a fellow alongside Leo Laporte over the years ever since the ZDTV days.  I like him, but sometimes the curmudgeon shtick gets a little overbearing.  But the tech world needs skeptics and critics like him.  He won't hesitate to give Leo a hard time, especially about advertising.  But you know, people need an income and people need a voice.  Those two things don't always coexist well...

i think dvorak and leo genuinely hate one another but continue their association because they know it's mutually beneficial.

My impression is that they are friends but disagree all the time, but who knows, they belong together.

ITM. I've been listening since ep.150, it's the best podcast in the universe!

Give it a couple of episodes and just catch the new ones.

People actually listen to this shit?
It's not only listened to, NA is entirely supported by the listeners. People who like it, and put their money where their mouth is. The "producers" (some of whom have used NA credits to join the Producers Guild http://www.producersguild.org/?page=membership_reqs) get mentioned each show, their copy read, and credits on the show page. All the supporters at the >$50 level get a mention on the show. I suspect that income is a small fraction of their actual total, made up by many "anonymous" doners at the <$50 level.
I did not go "all in" on No Agenda at first, and I know that it isn't for everyone. Sometimes I get sick of it myself. The inside jokes have developed for years, and the noob (who did not take the time to read their wiki) may think it akin to gibberish. However, their deconstruction of media hype, fearmongering, and blatant public manipulation is second to none. For example the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie pre-release hype, with the "911 like poster" designed to promote the movie as news. Adam guessed who the new pope would be months before it was ever announced. They were among the first to recognize native advertising, and they consistently call it like they see it... without fear of advertiser repercussions. I could rattle off another couple dozen examples... no problem. Of course I don't agree with everything that they say, I don't think they even agree with everything that they say.
In short they consistently encourage people to look with a critical eye towards that which is being foisted by the media as news, and often succeed. I think if a podcaster bought an executive credit, and provided good copy to them... that podcaster would have an increase in listenership. In a sense that's an ad... but at least they're honest about it.

I think your quote above would be better aimed at "normal" media.

Thought I'd fix that before the proofreaders cry foul.

I really like what I've heard so far but I might stop listening if they really buy into the moon hoax crap.
