WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Donald Trump will hold his first face-to-face meeting with Turkey's president Tuesday amid accusations that Trump gave Russian officials classified intelligence from a foreign ally. Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are expected to address the Syrian civil war, refugee crisis and the fight against the Islamic State group, including the U.S. decision to arm Syrian Kurdish fighters despite Turkey's vehement objections. But the meeting will take place with a White House still responding to what a senior U.S. official said was disclosure of classified information about an Islamic State terror threat involving laptop computers on aircraft. Trump shared the threat in a meeting with Russia's foreign minister and U.S. ambassador in the Oval Office last week, according to the official, who wasn't authorized to speak publicly on the matter and demanded anonymity. The matter could emerge in Trump's meeting with Erdogan. The U.S. is relying on regional allies including Turkey for intelligence-sharing and military assistance as it crafts a Syria policy, particularly as Iran and Russia work to bolster Syrian President Bashar Assad's government. Trump launched cruise missiles last month at a Syrian air base after accusing Assad of using chemical weapons. But the president hasn't outlined a strategy to quell the six-year civil war or usher Assad out of power, which his administration says will be needed to stabilize the Arab country. Tension was expected already for the Erdogan talks, after the U.S. announced last week that it would arm Kurdish Syrian militants to help them fight IS. Turkey has been pressuring the U.S. to drop support for the militants and doesn't want them spearheading an operation to retake IS' self-declared capital of Raqqa. Turkey believes the Kurds in Syria are linked to a Turkish Kurdish group, known as the PKK, which the U.S., the European Union and Turkey all consider a terrorist organization. The U.S. sees the Syrian Kurds as their best battlefield partner on the ground in northern Syria.

President Trump today welcomed Turkey’s president to the White House today and promptly committed another foreign policy gaff during his opening remarks. He called the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) a terror group even though the PKK is a key United States ally in the fight against the Islamic State.
Formed in 1978, the PKK waged an armed struggle against Turkey for years to establish an independent Kurdistan. But all that ended in the 1990s.

The group renounced violence after PKK chief Abdullah Ocalan declared a unilateral ceasefire following his arrest in 1999. The group also jettisoned its Marxist political philosophy, according to published reports.

Today the group is known for respecting gender equality, secularism and minorities. Its view of Islam is also “modern, moderate, and ecumenical,” according to regional experts.

More importantly, the PKK has been on the front lines in the fight against ISIS as part of the YPG (People’s Protection Units). The YPG is a key U.S. ally that has pushed back Islamic terrorists in wide swaths of Iraq and Syria.

The YPG’s female fighters are respected and feared by ISIS and the group has cooperating willing with the U.S. military presence in the area for years.

But all that was lost on the President during his initial remarks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

If Clinton had been POTUS and her cabinet NSA had been Flynn,  she'd put Chelsea in the WH, her campaign manager was in the pay of Putin, had openly invited a former KGB officer into the Oval office with the Russian state TV staff, then casually brought out classified information and told the Russians without first running it by her security staff what was allowable to release, then sent out her new NSA to spin a story that none of this happened only for her to say later it did, but it was okay; you'd throw a fit accusing her of being a communist.

Trump had to fire him (after telling everyone what a courageous guy he was) because Comey asked for more money to investigate the Russian link, and had daily rather than weekly update briefings. Throw in Trump tweeting that the 'Russia thing' contributed to Comey being fired, which sort of threw Pence and others under the bus, because they said Comey was fired because he'd disrespected Cinton last year.

There is no "gaff." The PKK has been on the State Department's list of Foreign Terrorist Organization since 1997, when Bill Clinton was President. The author didn't even know basic facts. You are an idiot to not at least check out the list before typing.

But what is really amazing is that the Home Office also designates them as a "proscribed terrorist group" since 2001. That is your own government, and you were unaware.

Obviously one can argue whether the group(s) PKK, and their other associated names/groups, should be on our lists as terrorist organizations and argue about whether the Kurds should have their own country or some kind of autonomous region and appreciate their help against ISIS etc but the fact is that they are currently on both of our terrorist lists.
