But that is the history of humanity- and the internet only makes it worse.  A century back people had to learn to live with others whose views they found repulsive because there were a limited number of neighbours on the farm or 30 people in the town.  With urbanization it became infanetly easier to seek out and narrow down social contacts. 

As an example- look at churches that keep splitting on minor theological differences.  In a small town that could not happen.  With the internet it becomes even more exaggerated as forums spring up to support every fascet of one's preference.  I once stumbled across a christian pipe smokers forum... Yes, because christians who smoke pipes must isolate themselves from those who do not.

I think you used to have knitting clubs for people knitting everything from socks to sweaters.  I am certain if I really tried I could find an internet forum dedicated to those who believe that only socks should be crafted (and then only in the colour red and only in acrylic yarn...)  I can see what proceeded the last split would be half of the posters saying that wool was a superior insulator and the other half getting angry and touting the benefits of acrylic... Suddenly neither side can stand the other.  The internet has made it possible to search out those who do not challenge our beliefs- and most people happily take advantage of it.

Even worse is that search engines now tailor your requests to what it thinks you may like.  Liberals will get fed liberal sites and news stories to support their world view- Conservatives will be fed conservative affirming news.  It is a stupid cycle (thanks Google) and one of the things I specifically enjoy about this site.  I have said it before- when a hatred or dislike of a host who ruined a great show is the only common thread that binds a group it makes for an interesting and varied experience interacting with people who you otherwise might not.

I'm on a couple of forums and one has a provision to be removed (You just do it yourself) the other doesn't. The one that doesn't, has had one or two requesting to be taken off the list over the years. One was without further argument, the other stayed on anyway after a three month or so break, I think the owner simply forgot to remove him off the list. I don't think it's being an attention whore, I think it's just asking if it can be done. I don't know why, maybe they're genuinely worried (though I have no idea why) they'll be traced to a site that was set up against Noory? Who knows? Is it on the NSA 'taboo' list?

As a site owner, this would would have been my trigger moment. I don't like this kind of manipulation - partially because it reminds me of blackmail and pulling the "threat" card, partially because it reminds me of a few past relationships gone sour involving stalker types who proceed to self-destruct and attempt to pull their target down with the ship.

A screen name is never as important as you believe it to be. It's an illusion. Almost ANY NAME here can quit posting and eventually will become old news. Usually sooner than later. It's the way it works. (Ironically, Noory would not be forgotten if he never posted here again.)

You also have the benefit of the word "awake" being so ubiquitous.

I used to think that it was fine to delete your own account, but the catch is there's the little problem of deleting your account and reregistering under a different name which kind of bends the rules of honesty. I know, I know, it's the internet and we're all dogs behind the screen, but your fellow dogs have a right to know with whom they're speaking, even if it's just a screen name. Now I'm not saying this applies to you, awake, but it's one of the main reasons why admins and mods don't delete accounts. I am currently battling a troll who gets banned and re-registers under different names each time. She thinks I'm an idiot and can't figure out the obvious, I want everyone else to know it's her and deal with her accordingly.

It's not easy running or modding a forum. Maybe the solution for you is to use different user names for different forums, and break your breadcrumb trail, rather than assuming you're being associated with a 'right wing forum' which gave me the best laugh of the afternoon. I'm certain in the internet universe, 'awake' is not exactly a unique name.
