Extraordinary podcast. Not a fan of the military stuff, but the science episodes are outstanding.

This episode, a three hour behemoth tour of a new telescopic observatory, including various interviews, is the sort of thing that Noory could never do in a million lifetimes, and the sort of thing This American Life would reduce to cheap, plinky sound effects and manipulation -- but not here:

Highest recommendation.

1) Thanks for the rec. Just listened to the story about container shipping (80% of the world's goods spend time in a container). They left out some of the other stuff like the containers once they touch ground. (They do talk about the 4km, double-stacked with container trains). These are being used as storage units. If you go on the 40 freeway from Los Angeles, there are miles of containers sitting on old rail tracks. I took a peek in some of them and they were all new automobiles, miles of new automobiles.
Absolutely recommend the show. I have to brush up on my German to listen to the second group of shows.

2) This American Life has turned really bad over the last 15 years. The good shows were when Ira was stealing Joe Frank's ideas.
And Ira has never done anything as powerful as Joe Frank's mother discussing growing up in pre-WW2 Germany (Higher Learning).  Joe's Mom's monologue were pretty much the foundation for This American Life.

3) Saw Lake of Fire,  which you talked about in another thread. Very powerful, and black and white was a perfect choice.

4) Lots of great stuff for aviation fans here.
For example a list of recent shows:
148 â€" Flying the Harrier
144 â€" Flying from Aircraft Carriers
143 â€" Collision Avoidance with FLARM
138 â€" Fly-by-Wire im A320
133 â€" The Space Shuttle (Part 2, Operations)
132 â€" The Space Shuttle (Part 1, Systems)
124 â€" The Concordia Sailplane
120 â€" Flying CAE’s Falcon 50 Simulator
and more
