The "I'm watching/just watched *movie title* thread....

Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, To Have and To Have Not, Passage to Marseille and Key Largo ... a great run of movies.

But I'm not too precious I heartily recommend the Rifftrax version of Casablanca!

Best of Rifftrax - Casablanca

How about High Sierra? Less well known than Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

I think The Big Sleep may be my favorite Bogart film, although it can be a bit hard to follow, since some of the salacious material in the book had be removed, thus causing the plot to make less sense.

oh yes, I've seen "in a lonely place". And I've seen all of Bogarts movies, more than once. I love your enthusiasm for the old classics. I especially like the 40s noir stuff. Also classics are the Maltese falcon of course, Casablanca, Key Largo, passage to Marseilles and many many more.

I find it too complicated for me to speculate on how he would be received today. Times are different, values are certainly different.
Ah yes.

Yes, "the big sleep" was the movie I was trying to think of when I made my list above but couldn't remember the title. I have two copies of that movie, the makers edited it and made rather drastic changes so that the public would like it better even though changed the plot aunt left out key parts.
I just watched "blue Jasmine".(2013) woody Allen. I see it averaged a score of 78 out of 100 with most people but I was a little less impressed I was impatient with it.
On the  docket for a few days from now is "the curious life of Benjamin button". I see they gave it four stars. Should  I invest my time? Brad pit.

It's an interesting tale.  Brad pit or no.  I'd watch it again only if the wife promised me sex.  Otherwise, seen it once, that was good enough.  Now, if it was 'Kelly's Heros' I'd watch it several times back to back without the sex requirement.  KH is that good.
Heck, forget BB and watch KH instead.

Humpy Bogey movies are some top class entertainment.

Just got hold of Beat the Devil, and shall be watching it as a prelude to the World Cup Final.

If I can later drink myself to the point of unconsciousness, without losing consciousness, and persuade Mrs Kelt to indulge in a quick wriggle to top it all off, I'd say that Sunday the 13th of July is as close to a perfect day as it's possible to get without also being Raptured and finding out that the Branch Davidians were the ONLY religion to get it right.

KH is man shit.  Only real men get it.  Sit back in your underwear, watch the flick, suck down some foam and chips.   It just doesn't get any better.

Sampo used my suggestion for the Weekend Discussion thread at the Satellite News website for June 28 and 29th. Comments will be closed on August 27 for that particular discussion/thread.

I consider it a feather in the hat I wear at mst3kinfo; somewhat like having your words posted on the NE corner here.  It's a little bit more difficult to snag, due to slot availability being limited to the number of weekends in a year.

In my virtual job history, I am now Camazotz Automat: 1 of 52 in the 2014 Satellite News Weekend Discussion deck.

Any fellow mysties on this forum are encouraged to add a comment if you have some favorite SHADOWRAMA moments. It's around 50 comments strong so far. I would love to see the century mark.

Because I am just that kind of narcissistic robot puppet.

I decided this was the best topic to post the link on, as most MST3K fans in this forum regularly check out this topic.

Thanks.

Going to recommend an obscure and quite bizarre take on the Western Genre

"Welcome to Blood City" aka "Blood City"

Director: Peter Sasdy
Actors: Jack Palance, Keir Dullea, Hollis McLaren, John Evans, Samantha Eggar
Runtime: 96 min.

Five people awake to find themselves in the Old West with no idea of how they got there. They soon learn that they are convicted murderers in a world where they must be enslaved or earn the right to be a citizen by murdering somebody. Before long we discover that events are not what they seem.... [copied, pasted and edited for spoilers]

Watch it here but don't read the text as it includes major spoilers

Great idea, Cam!  I forgot all about those. Unfortunately, by the time I got to the site, somebody had already beaten me to everything I was able to pull from the musty recesses of my ever-shrinking memory on short notice.

It's been a long time since I've heard, "Movie Sign," or a rousing Albert Glasser score, so I'm going to dust off my VHS collection (yeah, I could watch them online, but the old commercials and promos of bygone Comedy Central shows are fascinating historical artifacts) and try to spot something that hasn't already been mentioned.

Like listening to something via 8-track tape or vinyl, it's often a more "full immersion experience" to ride the VHS rocket sled than to watch something online.  Plus, you have those time specific references to enjoy.

(For the most part, cassette tapes seem to be an exception to retro-tech-entertainment. Thrift stores can't seem to give those away.)

I have a color TV combo (VHF built-inin)  that I have set up in the master bedroom next to the large TV. The combo TV is there solely for a large drawer full of VHS tapes with three MST movies on each tape as well as a complete collection of Fawlty Towers. In fact I used to run a BDS years ago where we had a huge multiyear thread devoted to quotes from the bots. This all included the Joel episodes as well as the mike episodes. Gypsie, Crow, Tom Servo, TV Frank, Dr.Forrester, at all. I still have the set up running and watch a couple mystery science theater episodes every month.

That sounds like a perfect setup.

I just now noticed, in my last post I said "cassette tapes" but meant to say "audio cassette tapes" as being the retro medium that is for the most part, ignored.

I myself do still have some audio cassettes featuring Darren McGavin reading J D MacDonald's Travis McGee audiobooks.  I haven't gotten around to converting them to mp3.

While they are abridged versions, McGavin's vocal skills really honored the McGee character. He nailed the part. I will never forget the first time I heard McGavin say, "The Deep Blue Goodbye, by John D. MacDonald."

Back on topic, this week I will be watching season one of True Detective.

Tarbaby

Wait, wait. Darren mcGavin reading all those john D  McDonald books? I have never heard of this. I would love to hear those because I was a big fan of John D  McDonald. And I listen to a lot of audiobooks and podcasts because of my vision loss.

If I remember correctly, McGavin vocal acted all but one or two of the McGee cycle.

Also, if memory serves, the one or two McGavin did not do, were fulfilled by another.

I do recall running into a dead end when I tried to verify one particular title because I could find no copy of it listed anywhere.  I have forgotten the color.

(To the uninitiated, the Travis McGee books always had a color as part of the title.)

This has been several years ago, so it's a little hazy. While I have all the McGee paperback books, I did not complete the audiobook collection.

However, I am fairly certain almost every McGee title made it onto McGavin's vocal cords. And they are magnificent. They included just the right amount of recaps or overviews etc, to allow them to be abridged, but still have the exact feel of the printed versions. I also liked the sparingly used music. With the Mad Men effect still going strong, I am surprised a new interest in Travis McGee has not taken off.

How serendipitous that I digressed onto audiobooks and a specific genre to someone else's real benefit. JDM has been on mind due to a conversation with Robert Ghostwolf's Ghost and his summer reading list.

I watched some of "Stranded in Space" last night (didn't see any noteworthy Shadowrama shenanigans, unfortunately), and one of the commercials was for a "Guitar Rock" collection, available on four LPs or four cassettes for $19.99; or two CDs for $29.99.  I'm surprised they were still selling vinyl in the early nineties.

I have a mid-range audio cassette deck that's almost thirty years old, and it's still ticking away.  I just purged a big pile of tapes that I hadn't listened to in years, but still have plenty that I do listen to occasionally.  Some are old band tapes, and the rest I'm just too stingy to replace.

Will probably get to the McDonald books after the 4th.  Might even check out the audio versions just because of Darin "Nightstalker" McGavin.

Some of the TDK metal cassettes had a negative bass response as they were designed for Classical music, however if you wanted to push bass frequencies more then you could end up with a de-facto tape compression and a HUGE bass sound.

A friend had a high-end stereo that had a CD changer AND a cassette player and the cassette I made using the above method sounded immense.

I'm sure there's more technical way of describing the above...  ::)

I've been watching a Inspector De Luca a subtitled TV series about an Italian policeman set before, during and after WWII, wasn't expecting much but it was actually very good

I've been watching "The Bridge".  Excellent show.  Also I'm glad I don't live near the border.

The whole thing is very funny.. especially as I really do like Casablanca.

It's never going to beat the Mitchell episode tho.

So that's just an abridged version?

BTW, did you catch the Nat Geo channel on April Fools Day when they turned it over to Rifftrax?  I just happened to surf by and heard the unmistakable voices of Mike and Kevin doing horrible things to a cheesy nature documentary.  Great stuff, and apparently there's a chance they'll get a regular show there because one of Nat Geo's programming execs is a big fan.

I won't ask because maybe I found same source. Definitely going to watch. Love Gleeson and wish he got more work. As for other stuff. I don't know why but I like old Charlie Chan movies and The Falcon series of movies. Stupid, often predictable? Yes. But good entertainment and often has nice side-notes like music spectacles, dancing girls, cool cars, and funny stereotypes (the black guys in CC movies (Mantan Moreland and and his sidekick) were excellent comedians. Far beyond their time and worth (at the time.)

10 mins 45 secounds into Beyond the Black Rainbow....

If that's not a nod to Phantasm's music and a Barracuda distance shot, I don't know what is.
