Run Fatboy Run

Any runners in here? Post you runs, distance and time.

Do you run casually? Are you in training for a particular event.

I have recently started running in "Fun Runs". The most recent run that I ran was a 15km (9.32 miles) run to raise funds for our Children's Hospital. I ran that race in 1 hr and 14 minutes.

In June I am running in a 10km (6.2 miles) run to raise funds for MS. I have personally raised nearly $1500.00 for this race which is close to home as my cousin has MS.

I am in training for a half marathon in October which is 21km (13 miles). I have completed 2 half marathons (not an official run) and the second run I smashed my personal best by 15 minutes which is huge. I ran the half marathon yesterday in 1 hr and 53 minutes.

I only started running late last year and have lost almost 18kg (40lb).

So if you too are a runner post here to tell me your stories.

Over the past twenty-five years, I ran, trotted, and occasionally loped nearly a mile in increments of up to thirty yards, and hardly ever coughed up blood while doing so.  ;D

Seriously, though, I have several friends who run regularly, and I admire their dedication.  Good luck and enjoy the endorphins!

I started my journey by walking small amounts then larger amounts. Then I would walk and run the last 1km (0.62 miles) and then the last 2km (1.25 miles) and then I just became like Forrest Gump.

Life is like a box of kale and quinoa smoothies.

I used to run. I had one friend in particular that ran Iron Man marathons, one time he finished on a broken ankle. He always talked about a runners high. I know what "high" is and it has never accompanied running. My longest run was just over 12 miles, then I needed new lungs.

I broke my right leg in a motor cycle accident shortly after that run... it was god's way of saying "moron, if I would have wanted you to run, I would have given you spots and a tail."

Now I only suggest walking about 2 miles a day, for most people that will give very healthy benefits.

I used to run as well.  I learned it should be left to shorter more naturally slender people.  All that pounding on the joints of taller heavier people takes it's toll.

I finally got a bike instead.  I loved riding when I was a kid and love riding now.  All those people out on their bikes these days, it's because they enjoy it.

Never had a runner's high. I too have had highs and if running gave those highs there would be a lot more people hoofing it than there are.

To me I think that was god's way of saying, "Moron, if I wanted you to ride a motor cycle I would have given you wheels and had a cool sounding noise come out of your butt."

He got one thing right. :)

I agree but my weight loss hasn't come from the increased exercise. I believe that weight loss is 90% what you eat and 10% exercise. Portion control was my biggest enemy. That and sweet and salty treats.

The pounding of joints is a big problem. I found that this was mitigated as I lost weight and by purchasing running shoes at a specialist store that used a treadmill and a video camera to film my gait and find the right shoes for my running action. I used to get very sore ankles when I ran and now I don't feel any pain at all.

What joint are you referring to? Also what type of pounding are you referring to?

We may be talking about 3 different things. All of these producing different outcomes. Some with a smile and a giggle, some requiring ice, and some come with a happy ending. Sometimes all are required and welcome.

It wasn't a fast run, it was in the late 70's and just finished last year.

The accident happened on my way to meet two others for a run... so take your pick.

Perhaps there is no god and you are just a bad driver. ;)

I think you are right.  The body is a very efficient machine - it takes a lot of extra activity to burn off fat.  Eating fewer calories, the right kind of calories, and even when they are consumed is key.

With what we've learned about leptin (discovered in 1995) and glucose over recent years, it seems the most important thing is the individual body and how it reacts to specific kinds of calories.

I don't know anyone who does so casually--they all seem to be pretty hardcore, at least the people I know.  It's almost a religion to some people.

I prefer to walk, myself.  And the FitBit gadget I got for Christmas seems to be a helpful tool in measuring things.

I've gone a bit more hardcore with my tracking tools and bought one of those GPS watches that track your runs as well as provide data like pace, distance, cadence, heart rate, elevation. It also has the added benefit of allowing the gov'ment to track my movements more precisely than my smartphone.

I don't do that running shit, unless it's after someone.

No.  No, I don't, not anymore.  I don't do that kind of work, except in my dreams.

Grov505th

I ran track in high school..100m and 200m sprints.
I loved running short distances. I then joined the military and had to run for PT.  Let me tell you I know hate running....with a passion.
I never got the runner high people talk about...but I did hit the wall plenty of times, for me it was around the 2 mile mark.
I think the farthest I ran when in was 5k, they had a mandatory fun run..in formation...ALL OF US.  the only way I made it was to just let my mind wander.

BobGrau

I used to cycle a lot... I got a lot of satisfaction from casually pedalling uphill no-hands, smoking a fag and grinning cheerfully at passing 'serious' cyclists  8)

This morning I will be doing a 16km (10 mile) run. The last time I did a 16km run it took me 1 hr and 23 minutes. I will be attempting to beat that today.

Kelt

You should do what I do... aim to finish a minimum of 1 minute slower than the previous effort.

That way you're always achieving.

I didn't beat it. We had unseasonably warm weather and I went a bit limp.

Good luck. That time is the best I ever got up to-8 min miles over a 10k.

Congrats on your improvements, Jaz! I thought about getting into running, but tbh I found I prefer speed-rope for cardio/coordination because I just like to stand in one place & not have to drag my ass home if I get too tired lol & mmmm quinoa + Kale. I was going to plant some in the garden today but didn't get around to it.

I must say my minutes per mile get higher in the first third of my runs and then once I get into a rhythm they get a little lower. If I do a long run between 10 and 13 miles then towards the end they get a lot slower but I always finish quite strongly. I have also found that depending on what I listen to my minutes per mile is either higher or lower. If I listen to something hard and heavy or something that is up beat then I tend to run faster. If I listen to something slow I run slower. If I listen to talk radio I may as well be walking. If I listen to Noory I wake up having drooled all over the sidewalk.

Usually my first 3 weeks or so in new shoes got me +20 or 30 seconds per mile. I don't really listen to music, I like to try and listen to myself run, I try and run as quietly as possible.

jazmunda

FYI I ran in a 10km (6.21 miles) fun run today and beat my personal best of under 48 mins. I also raised $1,700 AUD ($1,580 USD) for MS.
