At the risk of being banned:

John Barry from The Black Hole:

THE BLACK HOLE movie soundtrack. Track 2 of 24 MAIN TITLE

Hypnotic.

Also, again also ban-worthy as obvious, but Apocolypse Now.

Apocalypse Now - Ride of the Valkyries (1080p)

Anything that features the Doors and Wagner has got some creative mojo.

John Barry from The Black Hole:

I had no idea that along with all the great Bond scores like Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice and my favorite Moonraker, he also did many other films from The Deep, to Body Heat, to Out of Africa.  What a legend.

The Black Hole!
I agree, very hypnotic.
A few years ago, I heard a piece of music in a Disney film that sounded very familiar. The melody looped over and over in my head for days on end. It was haunting me, as I was trying to identify its origin.
Turns out, it was the Black Hole theme. I don't remember the film it was in, but I think it was intended as a tribute to John Barry & not an overt rip off.

Here is another good John Barry theme-very similar sound to the Black Hole. Persuaders theme. Also sounds a little bit like the Fantastic World soundtrack Drooly posted.

Ok, maybe I 'm cheating, but I'm hoping we can broaden the topic to include video games?  Some of them have fantastic scores, as good or better than movies in some cases.

One of my all time faves is from Final Fantasy VII, a score by the great Nobuo Uematsu that has such impressive scope, from wonder, to melancholy, to playfulness, to horror, to high drama.  All done with the hardware limitations of the original PlayStation gaming console, some 17 years ago.

Original full score:

Selected songs on solo piano (Check out "Those Who Fight" and "One-Winged Angel"):

Another great one, is the original Halo score, from the Xbox console.

The Third Man
Dr. Zhivago
early 1950's TV documentary: Victory at Sea
most films by Kubrick had good selection of music
bridge on the River Kwai
a lot of war movies had memorable theme song or tunes
The Producers (Original)
Easy Riders
Patton

if not total soundtrack as per albums after the movie soundtracks most of these had themes that burned in to your psyche

Moonraker (Ok not the best Bond movie, or even the best Bond, but a cool, moody soundtrack)

A very nice soundtrack! I somewhat like the movie, but my whole attitude is "so what if it's cheesy, it's fun!" To this day I also love the "Thunderball Suite."

Also gotta agree with the "24 Hour Party People" mention. Such a funky, stylish film with a great soundtrack.

Speaking of crazy, I absolutely adore the Greg Araki film "Nowhere." It helped me discover bands like this:

Adorable - Vendetta

Then there's the always-awesome Cliff Martinez and his work from Solaris:

Soundtrack ~ Cliff Martinez ~ Solaris (2002) ~ 02 ~ First Sleep

And John Murphy's work from 28 Weeks Later, inspired by Godspeed You Black Emperor.

8. John Murphy - Don Abandons Alice (28 Weeks Later Soundtrack OST)
The scene where Don is running from the mass of zombies and there's a huge wide shot of them in pursuit had me actually cheering in the theater. Pure cinematic awesome.

I agree w jaz on the "singles" soundtrack... what a great "seatle" grunge scene album.  Another of my favs are:
the "shocker" soundtrack which featured mostly metal acts
the "judgement night" soundtrack which featured rap/metal band originals that fused the 2 genre's together... I know public enemy and anthrax did it so did RUN-DMC and Aerosmith but.... these are my picks.

Cynnie

Man on fire ..the Denzel movie ..I love love the Spanish songs

Even though I'm a borderline athiest, I think Peter Gabriel's score for The Last Temptation of Christ is a spiritual masterpiece.

I have way to many to count, but have been running a stream of my entire soundtracks folder on shuffle for a while now.

It's not always music and is quite high on the bit-rate - 3,500kb/s - (laptops may choke up)  Mainly movie/game soundtracks.  Probably have something for everyone, except not a lot of various artist ones.  Mainly orchestra tracks, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Alan Silvestri, Basil Poledouris, Horner, Giachinnio, Zimmer..The list can go on!

Enjoy, and let me know how it works for ya'll, what PC specs ya got...I can drop the bit-rate, but it really makes the visualizer look like shit.

Indeed Single's soundtrack was one of the best of all time.

The Naked Lunch score is filled with horns and sax. It is very nearly the most exquisite music ever made.

Honorable Mention: Blade Runner, Vangelis.

Hell yeah! I forgot about that one.

That one is VERY similar to the Angel Heart score (and overall music of the film). It makes me uneasy, and I love it.

This isn't technically a movie, though the plot, character depth, and atmosphere pisses on most Hollywood Blockbusters, but the soundtrack by Jesper Kyd is beautiful.

Soon to be a movie for real.

And this guy's acoustic version I could listen to all day.

Also an underrated movie I think.
Indeed Micheal Caine has never made a bad movie, oh wait, but this one isn't. But honestly, have a few pops and watch it. Not as bad as reviews say. I liked the **spoiler**  theme also that, somehow, "real" pirates and pirate society (as opposed to the modern day ones off Africa, the Malaccas, or the Caribbean drug-runners ones) could still exist. Not great but good movie. Score, eh. But movie good.
**refers to 1980 movie "The Island", not sure of other movie of same name and can't vouch for it.

Yeah I think that's the movie based on Peter Benchley's book.  I read it a long time ago as summer beach reading, but never caught the flick.  The book was kinda cool though as I remember.

The one we're talking about was from 2005 - a big Michael Bay sci-fi production that kind of bombed at the box office in spite of Scarlett J.'s hotness.  I thought it had some cool parts though so maybe worth checking out as a rental sometime.

136 or 142

"Knocking on Heaven's Door" from "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid is excellent.  The scene is amazing.

Knockin on Heaven's Door - Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid

Too bad "Billy" from the same movie is awful.

Marty Scorsese movies are always scored fabulously. The movie Casino jumps out as one of the best in the category.
