Art Bell

Sometimes when I think that all of this no DM stuff is too much, I listen to an old AB show and I realize how much I want new content.

Take my money already.

Careful, Art. A wheelbarrow of his people's money is roughly equivalent to a WIC stamp

Art Bell is the only person, corporation, institution, outfit, racket or charity that doesn't want my money.

Take my money already.

Please!  ;) :o ::)

This is exactly how Coast does it - mic in program & utility feeds, guest in program & utility feeds, music in program only. Utility feeds their recording backup for the podcast so it's automatically stripped out. Not complicated in the slightest.

If he's willing to put out a music-free podcast, this is the way.

You seem to know a lot about how Coast to Coast AM is run. I KNEW IT! You're Jorch's long lost bastard! Be gone with you.

A brilliant solution, and a great way to boost paid subscriptions.

It's true but the wheelbarrow is made of gold. Gold! I tells ya.

Agreed! Art has expressed a little worry about outgoing bandwidth, but I'd hope his provider can support 2 streams. I'd hope they multicast it.

And what says the utility/free feed can't be mono? My guess is the utility/free feed would be lower bitrate too, so mono may help with bandwidth.

How is it too complicated? Bateman has stated how Coast does it and if the chimps at Coast can do it then surely Rowland the Magnificent can do it too.

The opposite is true, it actually simplifies things as far as the music licensing is concerned.

Seriously. Any idiot who's spent more than 10 minutes working a board knows how to do this.

He he. I read that as "working a broad".

Sadly, because of guilt by association, georgegoldman has devalued anything pertaining to gold.

The thing that irritates me about Art is that he has brought us down this road so many times before. Before getting all of us in a dither, couldn't he have done his due diligence and then once when all his ducks were lined up and he was sure that he was going to start a new show, then he could have announced for a fact the the new show was going to be on.

I don't want to sound like a wuss, but I almost feel like we are getting abused. Really Art?

There you go! Two streams!

Yeah 2 streams are not difficult at all.
I've done it multiple times without even trying, during the mornings first whiz.
The only pitfall was, I missed my target audience. DOH!

This would be relativity easy. Two feeds. Hold down a button while playing music that just plays a free song (Crystal Gale etc...). When the button is released it goes back to live audio.

Yes but who's going to push the button?

Keith didn't mention that there was going to be a button. That's it. No Show. The shows off! What's that? The button can be automated? Can we charge for the button? Great. Shows back on.

Just joking around Art. Put me down as another one you can take money from.

It's even simpler than that, to insert the music into one stream.
Takes out user error, even Jorch could do it.

Let's not go full retard.

I can take all the drama until July, as long as July comes !   :)

jazmunda

Art is publicly brainstorming with people on Facebook now. If there is anyone who can explain Bateman's idea to him please do.

Fear not, July will come.
Now if you are alive, or there is a new Art Bell show then... Who knows.

I turned on the Bat Signal.

trust_no_one

Yes, I should be more specific, Catsmile. . . Art's return in July with DM, and me around to hear it.   ;)

$4.99 seems a bargain given all the other junk I've tried to listen to.

Emails have been sent. I have no idea what he's doing now.

indigoo

Can someone elaborate how that would be a solution to the issue of royalties? Only subscribers are paying for the music, basically?

He seems to be shooting things down on the premise that it would involve extra work on his part which is perfectly understandable. He is already doing the show solo he doesn't need an extra distraction.

Does the idea/solution you proposed result in any extra effort during the show on his part?

Agreed, the real complication is providing a solid streaming feed to the potential masses. We all know how easily a feed from a streaming service for example, tunein radio can bog down. How often is a stream rated at 100%? Almost never. Will Art be able to tolerate the reports of his stream cutting out? He'll get those no matter what because the average smartphone user now is half retarded and doesn't know dick about trying a different stream let alone what air interface and protocol their phone is using.
But maybe Art can help educate his audience a bit in that regard.

As for content delivery, I'm out of my depth here but I'm guessing if you want the stream to resist bandwidth and ddos problems it would have to be served from a CDN with intelligent routing and load balancing. I'm also guessing such a CDN would need to provide a proprietary app for listeners to install to make use of said routing and balancing. But I'm sure Keith has weighed all this shit out.

jazmunda

If the two feeds is a viable solution I think that it actually gives the paid subscribers the value of being a paid subscriber over not whilst giving non-subscribers incentive to become a paid subscriber.

Wanna take a ride with ABBA? Then pay for it you cheapskates. :P
