I wet myself a little bit when I read it.

I know I'm late on it, but WTF is this?!

In Art-Speak, it's called a cock tease. In normal human parlance, it's called a fucking lie.

BattyBrooke

As I perused through the different threads today I found myself laughing more than I ever have on here and was thinking "These people are funny as all get out...It can't get funnier than this here." and then I found out the phrase on the upper right corner was clickable. Dying laughing.

omg lol thank you for making note of this.

"Alison, if YOU raised a baby, and beat it, and kicked it..."

From tonite's Somewhere In Time, 3/4/97:

Caller: "Art, no one ever brings up nutrition on your show!"

Art:  "Well, I love quarter pounders."

(... back and forth dialogue with caller trying to convince Art why they're bad, finishing with ...)

Caller:  "I may have to try one, just since you suggested it."

Art:  "Live is short, eat  quarter pounders."

How I miss those days.

Good stuff.  But Art's fondness for QP's concerns me.

Hey, sure, his latest wife is thin, but not that thin. Come on.

Yes but I'll take the occasional QP indulgence over turmeric and pizza roll obsessions.   :D

Near the end of that SIT show, an armed forces caller from S. Korea called in, and after some back-and-forth, ended with he and Art discussing Ham Radio frequencies and how they could hook up a schedule to chat.  So cool.  The only freq. Noory knows is how often he combs his mustache.

No matter what SIT show is played, I am always amazed by 2 things about the callers:
1) They are polite, intelligent, and typically understand how to say their best zinger in a few seconds.
2) Art seemed to be friends with his 14 mil listeners (*then) and somehow make it seem like he knew them for years..

The c2c audience sure changed, didn't it?

Yes HP (and MV) I'd agree.  Art seemed to expect a certain level of focus from his callers, and they often rose to meet his expectations, unlike the Noory zombies of today.

And I am amazed sometimes listening to those old shows, how he can so quickly build rapport with whoever is calling about whatever topic.  I think it stems from him being honestly interested in people, in their lives, their circumstances, their stories.

Actually I'm surprised by the level of hardline Christians that called in during the early shows, to be honest. There was a lot of outrage that a guest would advocate the use of a Ouija board or suggest that the universe is ruled by forces other than those discussed in the bible. Over time this seems to have been beaten out of the audience who loosened up a bit. The Lori Toy show (04-15-1994) really makes a good example of this.

This show also sticks out for me because of a great moment when Art comes back from a break and basically says "the audience has been calling her a nutjob" which made me snort since I don't think the word "nutjob" was specifically mentioned before that. The guest managed to hold it together pretty well despite being under assault from an audience that just wasn't having any of that new age bunkum. I can imagine that she did some primal scream therapy or something afterward to alleviate the stress.

In the late 80s and early 90s, I was around a lot of fundamentalist/evangelical Christians.  Attacking the New Age movement as satanic was the vogue then.  I think they moved on to other things, such as attacking photographer Sally Mann.

Actually, my experience upon relistening to almost the entirety of Art's old C2C is how similar the audience and even Art's hosting is to Noory's current abomination. Obviously there's a fine line between compelling brilliance and mind-numbing stupidity, and Art falls on the right side of that equation. But he is just as guilty as Noory of the many behaviors and habits and tics we accuse Noory of, and the audience of years past is almost as saturated with religious zealots, cigarette addled cat ladies and shut-in conspiracists. Clearly it's a matter of degrees here, as well as - most importantly - Art's ability to correct himself or apologize on the fly, and to call out most (not all) guests and callers when the BS is stacked too high.

Sometimes I wonder though, if I had to pick ten C2C shows to listen to on a desert island, if I wouldn't pick Art's five best and Noory's five worst -- because they're equally entertaining. And of course, If I had to choose between the two them to actually share the island with, I'd pick... Airyn, heh heh.

I disagree with the call-ins. Art had a vastly largers listner base 10 million compared to Gnoory 3. That is 7 millions listners. Obviously, those 7 million were smart enough not to listen to Noory. Therefor, they are inherently smarter. There were some really good callers back in the day, not so much anymore.

Sure Art got somewacko calls but those were some of the most entertaining, A caller who call in and start talking about New Age garbage and Bell well tell them to go eat a hamburger or something. Noory just adds fuel to their fire.

I miss Fritz.

Art knew how to handle callers, how to get the most out of them, when to dump them.  A lot of the time it wasn't s much the call itself so much as Art's summary or commentary of it after the call was over.

George Noory does none of that well, doesn't even try

I have accepted as fact that most of the current C2C callers are closely suited to the current weeknight host.  They're a matching set. They think Jorch is both intelligent and noble.  :P

It's weird how they're always gushing about how Jorch is "doing such a great job" and "wow thanks for all the work you do", etc.  Barf.

And don't forget that Coast started specifically as conservative radio, I'm sure there was a lot of holdover from that.  Another thing to keep in mind is that religion was always a huge topic on Coast and it's pretty consistently had that listener base.  Some of the most infamous classic Coast shows are evidence enough of that, Harlot for instance.

The religious are already very open to fantasy thinking, meaning they're a lot more likely to buy into what they're hearing on the show, agree with it or not.

I know, it's harsh, but I've had months to think about Art's last move, and it still doesn't sit right that after all the excitement, praise for SiriusXm and all the rest, he gives them an ultimatum which, unsurprisingly, wasn't accepted, and quits. He didn't have a strong hand to play, and I wonder if after all this time he realizes that yet.

Maybe Art is just tired. When he quit XM my first thought was "laziness." He had forgotten how much work was involved and simply looked for a way out. Maybe I'm wrong, it could also be he's just a quitter. I listened to him faithfully when he was the only game in town but now the competition is huge. I wish I could send him the bill for my sirius subscription.

All that being said, I will still download his podcast - if it becomes reality.

Somehow I don't think they realize he was only a public relations officer working at a desk, who didn't make Lt Commander after 10 years during peacetime  before retiring right before the start of the first Gulf War. ;)

Waaaahhh!!! Why is the quote on the upper right hand corner no longer accompanied by a soundbite from Snoory? That was the best!! Which one of you rabblerousers complained?! Huh?!

No youtube, I want to find Art Bell NDE shows, not see him nude
