I would really prefer a world without weapons and war. I think it would be great if every single person decided we don't need guns and we did away with them. However, many would still want them for hunting for food and the fact that humanity abandoning them is highly unlikely it's probably better if everyone were armed because as long as some have guns and others don't they can always be used to coerce the unarmed. If everyone were armed I bet manners and civility would make a big comeback Uuuuge, even!

A massive buyback program might be able to get a lot of firearms off the streets but it would have to be really costly. Not like ones that certain cities have done offering $100 per gun or such amounts. I bet if the government offered twice retail purchase price for any handgun, rifle or shotgun, they would get lots of takers. Same thing with ammo.  No questions asked. Show up, turn it in, get paid. One time deal.

I bet it would get 80-90%. If they did that, i have several I would turn in. I bet the $ would be in the billions.

Trouble is I have several I would keep as well.

I know Texas has laws about controlling access to handguns. I assume most if not all states do. When I had kids in my home mine were always locked in a safe or a quick access lockbox with a 5 button keypad. The gun in the lockbox also had a 3 digit combo lock for the trigger.

Suicides are tragic. Not sure anything about access to a gun facilitates suicide once someone is that troubled. Whether a child or adult.

I've cared for many young people who've attempted suicide, usually by taking OTC medications. Most recover without physical injury and get the counseling they needed before the attempt. But sadly, I also remember caring for two young boys, both 14 years old, who shot themselves in the head and died. Fourteen year old boys often make rash, impulsive decisions. Having access to firearms is adding an unnecessary risk in an already risky population.

It needs to be repeated that the tragedy in Las Vegas was also a suicide. In the big picture, the rising suicide rates and the opiod epidemic indicate we have a public health crisis on our hands that we are not equipped to handle. Denial might be possible in individual cases, but when the entire country is participating in collective grief, it's time to bring it into the light.

True, the media would have it that cops are just driving around shooting people, especially "youths," for fun. Your average cop doesn't even take his pistol out except during mandated range time. When shootings do occur there also is a risk of getting shot in the cross-fire.

Another problem with banning guns is animal population control. Archery will make a big comeback along with trapping. I kinda always wanted to catch a animal in a leg trap them beat its head in with a club or bludgeon it to death with rocks. It's a much more humane way of dealing with over population than icky guns.

Ha. Such pronouncements might actually be coming from the stage in those situations. Still it is another weird detail about this horrible event. The woman warning of deaths. I hope they track it down and make sure there was no linkage. I, actually, though it is awful to say, am surprised that the crazy only killed a relative (considering the size, crowd, weaponry, prep, and time) few number of people. This is no condolences to those families whose relatives were killed or injured, of course. And a horrible event but 50+ murdered and several hundreds wounded considering the number of rounds fired and available and time until he was killed/suicide?
