QuoteIn an interview discussing the deal, New Zealand's Trade Minister Damien O'Connor was asked about a suggestion from their Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta that the nation could mediate between Australia and China.Mr O'Connor said New Zealand had a "mature" relationship with China and could raise issues of concern, but added it also respected its trade ties with Beijing. "If [Australia] were to follow us and show respect, I guess a little more diplomacy from time to time and be cautious with wording, they too could hopefully be in a similar situation [with China]," he said.[...]One Australian government source said Mr O'Connor's comments had "not gone down well" in Canberra. "What [New Zealand] has to realise is that China is intent on splitting alliances in the region, and jumping in like this plays into their hands," they said. The Federal Government expressed concerns to New Zealand after Nanaia Mahuta made the mediation offer, and the New Zealand government has since been trying to play down the significance of the suggestion.New Zealand was conspicuously absent from a statement issued by the other Five Eyes countries â€" Australia, the US, the UK and Canada â€" condemning the arrest of democracy advocates in Hong Kong.

Quote from: albrecht on January 28, 2021, 07:04:02 PMOther side of the world, Doc. We still have some security alliances with them but when they went "no nukes" officially no longer ANZUS with regard to mutual security, I think. Basically they wouldn't let some of our ships dock because nukes and so we said ok we don't need to protect you in the event. I don't know where it stands now.
Quote from: Dr. MD MD on January 28, 2021, 07:10:58 PMOf course. How silly of me but I really though that they were part of some sort of strategic alliance between other so-called Western “democracies.â€
QuoteThe incident arose after a T-shirt maker posted online that a staff member from the Canadian embassy had ordered T-shirts with a bat print. That appeared to reference a theory about the origin of coronavirus â€" that it spread from a bat to a human in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where infections were first reported in late 2019.But Canadian media reported the logo was a W in homage to the New York hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan â€" not the city of Wuhan.Ottawa had apologised for any misunderstanding, it was reported.
QuoteIn August, Mr Biden signed the Chips and Science Act into law which pledged $52bn to revitalise semiconductor manufacturing in the US.The bipartisan legislation was seen as essential to national security interests to reduce the dependence of Taiwanese-made chips, which account for around 90 per cent of the market.
