What online shenanigans are happening today?

Started by GuerrillaUnReal, September 22, 2016, 09:02:50 AM

I think we need a thread for the stuff surrounding the dark corners of the internet and the attempted regulation of the internet that's coming. I read daily stories about this stuff but I don't think these topics fit anywhere else. Here's the first story that caught my attention.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3802108/White-House-staffer-s-email-hacked-revealing-Secret-Service-plans-Joe-Biden-s-private-schedule-Michelle-Obama-s-PASSPORT.html

DC Leaks released the email of a White House staffer, revealing what they claim to be Michelle Obama's passport
The private schedules of Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama and Joe Biden are also revealed in the emails
An email from Arielle Medina, Clinton's travel coordinator, also reveals how much those who are working on the campaign are getting paid Team members get $150 a day, must share rooms and have to take public transportation to the airport for flights between 7am and 10pm

The email of a White House staff member has been hacked by DC Leaks, revealing what the group claims is Michelle Obama's passport.

In addition to the staffer's correspondence with other White House workers, the emails also reveal detailed schedules for members of the Secret Service, the First Lady and Vice President Joe Biden.

The young staffer also appears to be heavily involved in organizing events for Hillary Clinton.

DC Leaks said in an email: 'The leaked files show the security level of our government. If terrorists hack emails of White House Office staff and get such sensitive information we will see the fall of our country.'
The hack also revealed a Power Point detailing the recent trip of Vice President Joe Biden to the Intercontinental Hotel in Cleveland on June 26 of this year.

The detailed report includes how many stairs Biden will be walking up as he arrives at the hotel loading dock and makes his way up to the second floor of the facility.
It also features an photo image of Biden waving as he travels from the loading dock and up the stairs, laying out all the rooms and who he will be expected to meet and speak with at the event.

I'm confused why you hack the federal government with your intent being hey, we need tighter security against assholes like us. But there's a lot of stuff in the world that confuses me.

>Is Something Major About To Happen To 4chan?

>Users on the websites /pol/ board have taken notice and rumors have spread across the site as to what the tweet means.

>Rumors include a data breach, which is not out of the realm of possibility after Yahoo reported that over 500 million accounts have been breached, in one of the biggest breaches of private information in history. The tech giant, which has suffered a steady decline since the 2010’s, reported that the breach might have occured back in 2014, which means that newer emails and other information could have been sparred.

>Other rumors that have been persistent across the website include a government crackdown on or that the site has been sold to the creator of SomethingAwful.

>For those who are not up to date, 4chan is an internet forum website which allows full anonymity for posters. There are several boards which people can post on, such as /b/, otherwise known as ‘random’, which cover a whole range of topics. 4chan is a very different community when compared to others for its use of memes and off the cuff humor.

>What is 4chan?

>The website has been recently linked to the dastardly alt-right goons. The alt-rights ‘efforts’ to troll the election have gone well, as they have triggered Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton into getting upset about a cartoon frog.

>Whatever may happen to 4chan is currently unclear, but if a drastic change hits the website, expect many people to express their discontentment.

There's literally hundreds if not thousands of chans both on the open and deep web. Even if 4chan goes down (which it won't) all that means is instead of one big hive and hundreds of little hives, you just created dozens of medium size hives. As we've seen with the normandy invasion of Reddit, the attitude that's powering "the Alt-Right" isn't exclusively a 4chan thing.

4chan had a data breach about three years ago. From memory... I don't remember all the specifics... some aussie on /int/ became obsessed with a french girl that was posting there. He realized that she had a 4chan pass so he somehow gained access to the main admin account (moot's) with the intention of getting her email address that she signed up with. I forgot how he did this but he managed to control the site for about two or three days. He controlled it that long because moot had already "checked out" and didn't give a shit about anything anymore so he didn't realize what was going on.

Anyway... there wasn't much "the hacker" could do. The admin/owner doesn't have access to people's credit/debit card info. That's handled by the credit/debit card processor that accepts payments on their behalf. So everyone's financial info was safe. He did have access to people's email that they signed up with. The french girl used guerilla mail so it was all for nothing. He had access to user ip addresses but you have to check each post individually to see. You can't just grab everyone's ip at once. Also he saw that the 4chan passes were bring in about $425,000 a year.

Just a little refresher on who she is

It's late on Friday afternoon for us East Coasters so that means it's time for another
Hillary dump from the FBI.

QuoteWhen the Obama administration announced its plan to give up U.S. protection of the internet, it promised the United Nations would never take control. But because of the administration’s naiveté or arrogance, U.N. control is the likely result if the U.S. gives up internet stewardship as planned at midnight on Sept. 30.

On Friday Americans for Limited Government received a response to its Freedom of Information Act request for “all records relating to legal and policy analysis . . . concerning antitrust issues for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers” if the U.S. gives up oversight. The administration replied it had “conducted a thorough search for responsive records within its possession and control and found no records responsive to your request.”

It’s shocking the administration admits it has no plan for how Icann retains its antitrust exemption. The reason Icann can operate the entire World Wide Web root zone is that it has the status of a legal monopolist, stemming from its contract with the Commerce Department that makes Icann an “instrumentality” of government.

Antitrust rules don’t apply to governments or organizations operating under government control. In a 1999 case, the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the monopoly on internet domains because the Commerce Department had set “explicit terms” of the contract relating to the “government’s policies regarding the proper administration” of the domain system.

Without the U.S. contract, Icann would seek to be overseen by another governmental group so as to keep its antitrust exemption. Authoritarian regimes have already proposed Icann become part of the U.N. to make it easier for them to censor the internet globally. So much for the Obama pledge that the U.S. would never be replaced by a “government-led or an inter-governmental organization solution.”
