Radio and Podcasts / Re: John B. Wells

Finally got around to listening to Caravan to Midnight.

Catching up on the shows,....

Wow. Just wow. I had NO idea of how much of a LUNATIC he is.

Some of the shit he says,......let go from C2C because you "tell the truth"?

Um,....no.

You are a kookapotamus.

Just a couple of guys sitting around raving.

I was listening the other day when he busted out,..."Let me tell you where the "N" word came from."

I went like this,...  ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

I keep going back because some of the guests are pretty interesting and still more edge than "Jorch" but MAN!

The first twenty minutes of each show always seem to contain jaw-dropping comments.

And I hate when he drops into his "English" accent. It's awful.

Maybe he's in Mel's hole?  :P

What the ever-loving fuck? I cannot EVEN believe this. It was fun while it lasted.

QuoteNoory fucks it up for me, can't deal with him hosting. If it was Knapp that would be OK.

Agreed. I hate to keep coming back to the "not cannon" thing but nobody,....and I mean NOBODY does the ghost thing like Art. He could even make the lame-duck callers entertaining.

For a while, when he was coming back yearly specifically to DO the Ghost-to-Ghost thing I marked that date off on my calendar and "took the phone off the hook" and eventually even THAT went away.

The supernatural is like crack for me. I could sit through a good ghost show damn near every week if it was done well but therein lies the rub,...

Noory following-up every turd of a ghost story with commentls like,..."Huh! WOW!" or, "See? Sometimes ya just don't know."

Fuck me,.....

Personally, I'd like to see Ian do it except he seems to have a not-so-subtle disdain for the subject. I do, however like his interviewing style.

If Noory were to do a monthly,...IMHO,....it would have to be a mixture of callers and relevant guests from the realm of supernatural study to make it listenable.

Though I don't QUITE know what to make of Warren, Maryanne, et al,... I always find them entertaining and, living in a formerly haunted house, (that STILL sees a fair share of sporadic poltergeist activity), I KNOW there's some shit going down that we can't see but TRUST me, it's there.

There isn't nearly enough objective serious investigation on the subject. It's only paranormal till you figure out what/why it is. After that, it's just,.....normal.

QuoteI'm a Stern fan (although I generally just watch his old clips on Youtube) but yeah Stern has sucked ever since he got the trophy wife. I would love to hear go insane on some of the wacko callers to C2C though heh heh. Stern Vs. JC would be amazing.

LOL! No kidding, right!? I was a HUGE Stern fan, (well, radio in general fan), way back in the day when I would catch the nighttime replay of him on WBCN out of Boston.

He was my staple every morning and I remember listening to his last broadcast on "terrestrial radio" in my cubicle at work with about eight other people huddled around.

I accidentally stumbled upon their live "on air test" the Friday before the show dropped on Sirius the following week. I dunno if anyone else here caught that in real time but I was riveted. I sat on the top of the parking structure at work for three hours and listen to them test the bells and whistles. It was amazing.

The first few years of Satellite were UNMATCHED, IMO.

Then Artie tried to carve himself up.

Robin got fat again and is so painfully the elephant in the room, (no pun intended), yet NO ONE is allowed to mention her. Howie's hypocrisy is at an all time high.

Then his show became all about Beth and her fucking bored rich New York housewife causes and dog charities,...a move, that if IMUS had pulled, Stern would STILL be crucifying him for it without mercy as we speak,....

Then,... Stern turned on his master by suing Sirius because they hadn't paid him enough money, (as if he needs it), instead of just shrugging his shoulders and doing the radio show he claims to love so much.

The show has gone stale, he's got no fire in his belly anymore. he has become Hamptons Howie as they say.

At least Artie is kinda back on radio doing the occasional sports thing.

QuoteWell, actually that didn't happen, but from the callers it sounded like it was going on all over SoCal, so I figured maybe I was just on the wrong freeway.

LOL! You and me BOTH.

Hey Fry's girl,....I'd heard that implied by some of his detractors as well and with the way he hates on women it wouldn't surprise me but that Leykis 101 bullshit is nothing but Jerry Springer radio. It can be provocative sometimes and even hysterical on a good day with the right vibe and, (God forbid), a few unscreened callers but after a while it was just the same old shit,...

"Never pay more than forty dollars for a dinner date"

"Always order a salad because women will never eat more than the man"

Blah, blah, blah. Every Friday got to be the same thing and that's fine dating advice if you're in LA and looking for a one night stand after dropping shitloads of X in some nightclub in Silverlake but for anyone who wants a relationship that lasts more than one rotation and doesn't need penicillin afterward "The professor's" advice, (which he does NOT seem to follow himself), is useless.

Those were some damn fun radio days though,....

Oh,...and here's some ancient history,...

TOM LEYKIS PART 3

QuoteOn the fence as well, HOWEVER, it's all in her delivery.  The written word is one thing but radio is NOT her gig--she sucks.  Monotone, scripted, annoying and that "quote"/"close quote" verbalization bullshit is beyond nerve grating.

.............My wife read that over my shoulder and said, "That sounds like you in the car earlier!"

We were driving to breakfast this morning and I was listening to the replay and I said that very same thing.

Linda DOES do some great investigating and reports on many topics I find fascinating but it's that droning, monotone, scripted, teleprompter delivery that grates on me.

It's like a fifth grade history teacher,...."Bueller? Bueller?..........Bueller? Frye?,.......Frye?,........FRYE?.........something-D-O-O economics?"

Yeah,...and that "quote, closed quote" lunacy.

Cripes!

I'm so glad to find out that I'm not going nuts, (well,....over the coast thing at least). I've thought this stuff for so long and now I know where the rest of my people went.  :P

Oh ABSOLUTELY.
I have zero problem with Whitman. He is very talented but it was kinda like Kirstie Alley coming in for Shelly Long or Dick Sargent replacing Dick York, (I mean, REALLY, how did Samantha not notice?).

I was just partial to Steckler and the way he would scream, "Awwwww,....EFFFF!!!!!!" when he got insanely mad. He was a good egg. My kind of intelligent/funny.

That being said,....Whitman does amazing impressions and is a very funny cat. His Leykis isn't bad but Hendrie still holds the Leykis-bashing crown with his comb-over boy routine.

"We have a hip young show..................(endless pause),.................the problem is,.......(endless pause),.......................I'm fifty-two!"

I would bust my shit laughing riding home from work.

I have to agree with you on Leykis. There used to be a real person in there. In the early days he was political and funny like early Bill Maher and the great St. George Carlin. He was provocative in the truest sense of the medium and peppered in the occasional "battle of the sexes" stuff.
Then he flipped and it was 24 hours of,...

"HOW much do you weigh?"

"135, Tom!"

"And you're HOW tall?"

"Five foot thre-"

"You're FAT dear!"

"Spit or swallow?"

"Pink or Brown?"

Are you kidding me? I mean, there's a place for that but after a while, Leykis 101 and Flash Friday just started to go over like a fart in a hurricane.

And for the record, not ONE CHICK flashed me during the four years I drove around every Goddam Friday with my lights on!

..................stoopid Leykis,....*wanders away muttering*

Damn your logic.

Where is he doing his show from/with? I couldn't really see anything on his site, (though I have not had coffee yet and I could be missing it), if you say it's without FCC it can only be satellite or podcast.

Either way, it'll be interesting to hear him unchained. Wonder if his voice has gotten any better?

I long for the old days. Why is Art in retirement? He HAS to be bored. HAS to BE!

A few years ago when Leykis was on in the LA market on a now defunct (I think) FM talk station, there was another show called Conway & Whitman.  Brian Whitman did a spot-on Leykis impression, which apparently irritated the beJesus out of Leykis and they had a big on the air fight over it.  It was all really quite entertaining.  What we need is for Noory to interview Leykis and Whitman on C2C, that would be worth listening to.

97.1 La's FM talk station!

Leykis became a caricature of himself by the time that station mercifully went down. For my money, Conway and Steckler were a THOUSAND times funnier. When Whitman came in all they did was recycle bits from when Steckler was on the show.
I'm not sure why Doug Steckler left the show but I know the downfall started when that little dick-biscuit Ricky rackman took a swing at him.

For you fellow radio buffs, that was a golden time in talk radio. The rundown went like this,...

Howard till noon.

Johnny B rebroadcast, (from his show in Chicago on "The Loop"), till three.

Leykis from Three to Six

Conway and Steckler from six to nine.

And Art-Goddam-Bell from 10-2.

wash-rinse-repeat,...for like,....four years from sunup to sundown and it was AWESOME.

You could hear radios in our cubicles at Disney all simulcasting and all of us pissing ourselves laughing,....and then it aaaaaaalllll fell apart.

Howard went to Sirius and started phoning it in,...

Johnny B was replaced by "The Triplets" aka Heidi Frosty and Frank,.....just saying their names makes me wanna kick a kitten through an electric fan,... >:(

We can thank 98.7 in LA for indirectly saddling us with that lot,...spinning off from that God-awful Jamie-Frosty and Frank in which Heidi was the weather girl. They shit-canned Frosty and Frank, they took Heidi with them and put Danny Bonaducce on with Jamie,...all unlistenable.

Leykis became a pandering, abusive, abrasive, (even more so), 800lb gorilla.

Steckler is replaced with Whitman on the Conway and Steckler show and the worst part of all,....

Art Bell retires.

It aaaaaalllll fell apart at once. From Camelot to Mordor in five easy steps. :(

"Take me out JFK junior-style, Tom!" I guess we can look forward to more of that horseshit or the opposite,..."Take me out Selena-style, Tom!"

"Uh,...we don't do that here, Mike!" (hangs up)

Ah Tom's selective offending,......pander, pander, pander to your target demographic in your particular region.

I used to love him but he lost his way hard. Maybe he'll freshen up for his comeback.

First of all, I wanna tell you guys what a cool forum you have. Judging from your avatars ALONE, you're my kind of people.

Stumbled across it the other night while in the depths of insomnia and Coast running on a loop on the player.

I've been listening to this show since it was Art Bell and i was a die-hard Art Bell show fan from way back in the Mel's hole days and the "sounds from Hell"

Now Art went back and forth for a while towards the end of his run doing the on again/off again fill in host thing for so long that by the time he transitioned out for good, I was used to having him gone.

By the time Noory took over I hadn't really given much thought as to who the proper successor should be to the Bell throne because by that time I was kinda just used to him. But I was never as religious a listener as I used to be in the days of Art.

It wasn't until I stumbled across this board that you guys nailed what had been bothering me about the show since Art left. It IS George.

Everything you say is right and ever since I read somewhere on the board here where someone referred to him as "Simple George" I can't get it out of my head.

I don't know how I didn't see it before, but you have a "George's quotes" thread I found and I woke my wife up cause I was laughing like a lunatic at four in the morning.

Anyway, thank you, and damn you for opening my eyes. Truth be told, I'd rather have the show than not. I love the subject matter and getting all of the weird esoteric news stories but for my money, Ian, (despite his occasional social creepiness), is way funnier, smarter and calls people on their bullshit way more than anyone else.

Great forum. Glad I found you.

Keep listening to weird shit late into the night, lads.

I know I will.

.........."Anything else Robin?"

"Cattle mutilations are up 20% from last year,..."

(Fred plays cow mooing sound effect)

"You think there's anything to that cockamaimie stuff? I mean c'mon? ALIENS come down and take COWS? Why not take PEOPLE!? Am I right Fred?"

(Fred mumbles something in agreement, cues Mars Attacks music)

(Howard chuckles),..."I can just see Eric the midget,...in that wheelchair,..."

(Robin brays her laugh), "Floating up!?"

"Yeah,....like with cows going up around him like in the Wizard of Oz?"

(Fred does an Eric the Midget impression), "What's going on!? EEEEEEEhhhhhhh!?"

(Gary interrupts on the intercom),..."Hey Howard?"

"What is it, Baba Booey?"

"We have that Sal and Richard prank call you said you wanted to get to?"

"Yeah, what is it again?"

"They call Mitchiyo Kaku? Y'know? With the Gay pizza thing?"

"Heh,....COCK-oo"

Wash, rinse, repeat.

My first post! Cool board!
