Military firearms history question

Started by West of the Rockies, June 25, 2016, 09:14:14 AM

Do any of our military history experts know what sort of rifle or musket would have been in use by the military in the Oregon territory of the mid 1850s?

Thank you for any insight you might have.

I would say the 1841 Mississippi or the 1816 Springfield...

I know early Civil War they were still using Rifled Muskets with percussion caps (a huge step above flintlock) but they were probably still muzzle loading with one shot.

I dive headfirst into deep water, Not Sure.

I imagine (ref.  Lennon, 1971) the Oregonian militia were comprised of citizens who provided their own arms so the answer, I again imagine is whatever they had for a long rifle.

Or "we'll never know what they got."

I doubt Oregon at that time had a standardized "full-kit" for the militia members.  I do hope that in spite of the foul Britishers in BC to the north that there was none of this sort of gun-free tyranny {I apologize for being tardis-y for the "forth once moar into the breeches" celebration...} I mean really?  I do not wonder at the Brexit.  I hope for the scot-zit, nasty things those...

I digress, the relevant anti-Britler ref can be found hear:
