Greatest country song of all time?

136 or 142

This is incorrectly labeled as The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, but it's The Byrds covering Dylan's "You Ain't Going Nowhere"
Actually, it's Roger McGuinn of the Byrds in a duet with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

From songfacts
Roger McGuinn of The Byrds buggered a line, transposing the words "pack" and "pick"...so, on a rerecording of the song for GREATEST HITS 2, Dylan sort of calls him out: "Pack up your money, pick up your tent, McGuinn--you ain't goin' nowhere!". All in good fun, of course...

McGuinn returns the favor in a late '80s version he and Chris Hillman cut with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band for their "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." McGuinn sings, "pack up your money pull up your tent, Dyl-an, you ain't a goin' nowhere."

It may be Dylan's song, but McGuinn does it best, and continues to perform it to this day in his solo acoustic shows.

Aw, shit! I was going say while we were on page 10 that maybe it's time we all start trying to compile a Top 10 list. We can submit our personal lists and then calculate the results and post an official thread Top 10. Of course, people should still keep posting their choices afterward and then we can do another again sometime down the road. If it's something that people here want to do, great! If not, no big deal. This thread still rocks!

Guys, help me out again here. I'm going nuts trying to find this song. Of course, I can't think of a title or the artist but it's a finger picking ballad and the lyrics go something like: It can pick you up, it can put you down, send your little word spinning around...something, something...they did it all for love. I've been trying to unravel this mystery for days now. I thought that maybe it was a Don Williams track but I haven't found it in his catalog yet. Maybe not. Anyway, when I was trying to track down that Uncle Smokey track earlier this year, Grav figured out what I was talking about the next day. I'm hoping for similar results.  ;)

This is one of those songs that seems to get a little better every time I listen to it:

Green snakes on the ceiling?!  ???

Not sure what this guy was drinking but I have a feeling he might've been drinking it with Hunter S. Thompson.  ;)

I guess sometimes just asking the question is enough. It just popped into my head after posting this that it might be Jerry Reed and voila!

that is one of his best for sure

It's my favorite version of that song, for sure. The song has quite a trajectory though. It was written by great legendary singer/songwriter Lefty Frizzell late in his career for Johnny Rodriguez who had a modest hit with it in 74 but Hag is clearly paying homage to Lefty in his version. Yeah, I've heard a few that imitate his style. Randy Travis is doing a Lefty imitation and Jon Anderson too. Probably a few more I'm missing that do too. He has a heavyweight in country in the 50s and toured with Hank Williams.

Randy Travis is great. I hope he gets his stuff together and makes some more albums. One guy that I don't see mentioned here is Clint black. He was one of my favs when I was in highschool

Some of my girlfriends were into him when I was younger but I wasn't into country as much back then and sure as hell didn't know who Lefty Frizzell was. Now that I've gone down that road I think I'll appreciate Travis a lot more. Honestly, I wasn't even that crazy about Lefty when I first heard him but eventually I had heard his songs enough on Willie's that I couldn't deny his greatness any longer. I like Jon Anderson a lot too:

reported:/ absolute garbage

I heard this song for the first time today on my wife's car radio.  It was playing either on a country or Christian station that my wife tunes in.  It's about the church of Hank Williams and Johnny Cash not regular church.  I guess it has been out a while.  I really dig it.  The song speaks to me.

I seem to be getting some sort of youtube playback error.  But if this is the one with the refrain/chorus line "...can I get a hallelujaih(sp) can I get an amen..." yep that's a good new country song.  It gets a pate thumbs up as well.

Nice one, pate! Never heard that before, only the Vera Miles one. It'll be a toss now as to which one I play at the end of the world.  ;)
