Yay! I'm glad they were found. They have quite a story to tell now I'll wager.

Taking exploratory balloon trips must have been all the rage back then.  A previous group of military men went down in a balloon but they crashed into a big lake during a storm.  I can't recall if any of their bodies were recovered but the balloon wreckage washed ashore and one of their carrier pigeons was found drowned.  I got them mixed up with the guys who went down in the woods.

Today I learned a new word "chatanqua" which I suppose is a spelling of the word "Chautauqua" which is a lake in New York where these gatherings began. From Wikipedia:
'The Chautauqua brought entertainment and culture for the whole community, with speakers, teachers, musicians, showmen, preachers, and specialists of the day. Former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt was quoted as saying that Chautauqua is "the most American thing in America."'

Oh my. Somebody in the idea-bankrupt Hollywood movie business could make a nice little "Movie of the Week" out of this. I think it may have already been done tho. Long-lost sweethearts reunite etc...

I do wonder why she went mad--very odd. ???

Another new term! "Dementia praecox" (a "premature dementia" or "precocious madness") now known as Schizophrenia Wikipedia tells me. Lots of crAzY people in the paper today.

Another Hog Story! There's a podcast called that. ;) Speaking of crazy, I have noticed lawyers do like to talk. These two guys should go into politics.

Things that I should not know...

Yeah- on smaller planes balance is important. They used to actually have 50 lb bags of ballast that they would move around the cargo hold to balance it out (probably still do?) It's not so much that it will crash- but for it to maintain a level flight (and improve efficiency and handling) the center of gravity needs to be balanced for the wings to function as intended. Smaller aircraft= less forgiving. But I seem to recall that there are scales in the landing gear that help them know when they are balanced.

I actually found a diagram showing the idea. You can imagine what happens if you put my seeing eye elephant behind the rear set of seats and it's support emu at the front... To put it another way, Kathy needs to sit up front while George sits at the rear to keep that narrow band of balance in the correct place. And they may need to jettison the baggage in the diagram with only 375 HP to get them airborne.

I may ask one of they guys I know if the pilot can feel it when a Human Hippo moves from the front to the rear to purge last night's XL pizza in mid flight. I bet they probably can on a small enough plane.

COG is pretty important:

Since we would have to wait approximately 97 years for Rix to get around to that I went ahead and posted some "Sneak-Peak" vidya for everyone.

ediot:  When I read the article about the Navy balloonists being rescued, for a half-second I thought I read "...crew had to eat their two passenger pigeons to survive..." but upon re-reading I saw that they were only carrier pigeons...  Still it made me wonder about when exactly the last Passenger Pigeon died or was eaten.  Apparently they were delicious...

So, I asked. And one of they guys told me that you cannot feel a human hippo moving about the cabin in mid flight. But he did tell me about one flight that came in where it started to "tilt" to the right because the COG was off. Apparently, they thought that one of the flaps did not work... I guess they pulled out and came around for another try without using them. That was the theory until they investigated and found that they almost had a major problem very close to the ground because either the cargo was loaded wrong, or they seated a human hippo in the wrong seat.

The funny thing is that most passengers likely did not realize how close they came to dying in a ball of fire.

I'm not sure about people being triggered back then but I think it was easier to institutionalize them for being insane, whether they were or not.

Seems more like you’re following me around because you’re an evil, obsessed commie faggot.

I don’t drink beer and have zero interest in watching you make yourself stupider than you already are (which is pretty stupid).

I'm enjoying the hog story and I feel the newspaper people are too. :D

The Shimmy AND the Toddle?? :o This is where we mark the decline of modern civilization.

Here in NE Oklahoma, the geese fly that same way. I think my house might be in their flight path or something, I see them all the time. Maybe there's a pond nearby but they don't always go the "right" direction for the time of year.

We ARE in the middle of the monarch butterfly flightpath. It's always nice every year to see them.

The clipping of the verdict in the hog case was in too poor of shape to post, but I was able to ascertain that the farmer who found the wayward hog was awarded $100.00 because he had to crate the hog up and move it to another location because it was making too much noise and was bothering the neighbors.  He took care of the special breed hog for several months until the rightful owner finally located it and, in a fit of anger, sued the farmer who had found it for $2,000.  The jury dismissed the plaintiff's demand for $2,000 and figured that the defendant, who had taken care of the hog, had spent around a hundred bucks for feed plus the trouble it took for the farmer to travel back and forth to take care of the hog at its remote location.
