As a proud South Carolinian, I am pleased to provide your SC geography lesson for the day.

South Carolina is informally divided into 4 regions (see map)
Pee Dee - counties in the lower watershed area of the Pee Dee River; river and region named
                after an old indian tribe; home area of Revolutionaty War hero Francis Marion, the
                “Swamp Fox”; Florence is the econimic hub of this region
Lowcountry - counties in the cultural region along the lower coast, including the sea islands;
                    area of the ancient sea coast;  Charleston, Beaufort, and Hilton Head are in this region
Midlands - counties in the middle of the state, generally between the ancient sea coast to the south
                and the mountains to the north; the state capital, Columbia, is in this region
Upstate -  counties in the upper, northwestern part of the state; a portion of the Blue Ridge
                Mountains are here; Greenville is in this region;  location of Clemson University
