I prefer to think that it was the bishops, the archbishops and cardinals that hushed things up.  The people who really wield the power in Vatican City are those people.  But yes, fuck the Catholic church for covering it up.

I think JP II was a decent guy and was probably clueless about the pedophilia scandals.  The cardinals and archbishops made sure of that.

That stuff was apparently happening long before John Paul II became Pope.

From what I can gather, John Paul II was probably sicker than the Vatican ever let on (he had Parkensons's Disease, IIRC) and probably didn't have as much of a hand in the everyday running of the Church as he should have.
