Nowadays, it's more like "money for nothin'" for a great deal of members.  Not just casino money.  Most NDNs I know have done quite a bit and none of them live on the reservation...  My godmother left the reservation at 17 years old, after having three kids with a guy who got himself killed.  She married a native who wasn't raised on the reservation and turned out to become a rocket engineer at General Dynamics back in the 1960s.

I'd say their worst enemy (other than money for non-work) is the Catholic Church.  Keeping people in the dark ages about a lot of shit.

My experience there was that the Indians that went to church were less likely to be drunks and many had some sort of job. But I agree many have left the reservation and done great things but what I saw was that the kids were encouraged to not leave the Res. Some of those kids were the best basketball players I've ever seen but none of them wanted to go to collage.
